The African American Experience in Texas: An Anthology ReviewSince Texas was not a part of the original bloc of slave-holding southern and border states, yet by choice was one of the slave-holding states, African American circumstances and history in Texas in some respects followed those of the slave states and in other respects diverged from these. Among the characteristics of Texas which made for its unique African American experience were its position as a frontier state, nearness to Mexico, the imprint of Spanish culture, and variety of job opportunities (e. g., cowboy, rodeo performers). African Americans in Texas had choices for immigration farther West or to Mexico and for types of work and community involvement not found elsewhere in the slave states. Nonetheless, racism was as entrenched and periodically as vicious as it was in any of the other slave-holding states. Twenty essays on topics which fall into either of the two major sections of the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries examine varied facets of African Americans in the ambivalent position of relative newcomers to Texas in large numbers inevitably facing prejudices against them inherent throughout Southern culture. From a mere 450 near the end of the eighteenth century, the number of African Americans in Texas grew to more than one hundred and eighty thousand by the start of the Civil War and over six hundred thousand making up about twenty percent of the population by 1900.
Urban and rural black culture, military and police service, religion, occupations, representative episodes of racism, the unique roles of women and music, and political developments are dealt with in the essays. Content ranges from sociological statistics, vignettes of incidents and portraits of notable individuals, historical patterns, institutional and political milestones, latent and overt racism, to excerpts of written materials. Substantive in their own right, the essays also mark entry points into this regional and state topic whose surface has only been skimmed. Chapter notes and a bibliography of more than 20 pages furnish abundant material for further study.
