Obstetric Intensive Care Manual, Third Edition ReviewWhen I was a resident I discovered the first edition of this book and it was the one that gave me the most 'security' in anticipation of Really Bad Things happening. It had the most important and urgently needed information available, and it was laid out in an easy to understand and easy to find way--all in a book that fit well in my pocket. The second edition came out as I was a new staff in a smaller military hospital overseas and again, this book was the single one I would have picked to keep handy for the immediate reference for urgently required information. It was a little bigger, but still pocket shaped.
As I transitioned to staff at another, larger, facility the book remained my favorite 'pocket' book. I have been complaining about the lack of an update for a couple years in fact.
I was overjoyed to find this third edition available. It remains a ready reference to find the critical bits for when you don't have a lot of time and/or you just want to double check your memory (I now have grey hair and a spottier memory so this is important), particularly when sleep deprived and feel the need for a 'peripheral brain'.
My only quibble at this point is that the third edition is larger--definitely not a pocket size, and is hardback. As such it feels like there should be a little more substance to it, 'like a real textbook' (perhaps information on TPN for example). I have to keep reminding myself that the desired function of this reference remains the same--'fast help when for when I need to do something quickly'. This is NOT an exhaustive text or reference for longer term issues.
I notice this also comes in a Kindle version--I would suspect the regular sized Kindle would not give adequate screen views, though a DX would work well (or using the Kindle app on a tablet/iPad type reader). It's a viable option for those interested, and at least a Kindle will fit in a lab coat pocket! If you are looking at this hard copy version but also own a Kindle (or a device with a Kindle app), then perhaps try a sample first to see if maybe that would suit you more.
Of all the books and other recommendations I have given over the years to residents and others, this book remains one of my favorites, particularly as one goes through training, and for those located in a geographically remote area.

ps, in case the author or publisher are seeing this, on page 52, figure 5-2 is labeld 'an ultraound for fetal growth and amniotic fluid index', but looks rather like imaging of a brain with infarcts...Obstetric Intensive Care Manual, Third Edition Overview
