Aquinas and Modernity: The Lost Promise of Natural Law (Modernity and Political Thought) ReviewShadia Drury is mostly known for her books on Leo Strauss and the Straussians: "The political ideas of Leo Strauss", "Leo Strauss and the American right" and "Alexandre Kojève: The roots of postmodern politics". In her latest book, Drury takes on a very different person: Thomas Aquinas.
The 13th century Dominican friar Thomas Aquinas attempted a grand synthesis of Catholic dogma and Aristotelian philosophy. Today, his philosophy (in the form of Neo-Thomism) is the official one of the Catholic Church. Many believe that Thomas did indeed succeed in reconciling faith and reason, and also showed why faith is reasonable.
Shadia Drury disagrees. In fact, she disagrees most vehemently. Her book is a frontal assault on Thomas Aquinas. Indeed, she seems to regard him as a profoundly evil man. (Drury, while a secular liberal, isn't a moral relativist.) According to Drury, Thomas sacrificed reason to faith at every point. He supported the crusades, the inquisition, the temporal power of the papacy and the execution of heretics. Indeed, he worked at the papal court himself, and the inquisition was to a large extent a Dominican affair. Thomas also defended slavery, the persecution of Jews, and the subordination of women. Drury further argues that Thomas' philosophy taken by itself wasn't particularly rational either. Siger of Brabant had a more rational philosophy, but Thomas opposed him. Siger was later accused of heresy by the inquisition and died under mysterious circumstances. Drury believes that Thomas had to distort the true Aristotelian teaching on many points to make it compatible with Catholicism.
Drury has also included an extensive chapter on enforced celibacy, pointing out that Thomas was just as ascetic and misogynist as Augustine. She then criticizes celibacy as detrimental to morality, using the sad affair of Abelard and Heloise as an example. The book ends with a chapter where Drury defends what she calls a "minimalist" version of natural rights. Thus, Drury actually believes in a secular version of natural rights, as an alternative to the nihilism of postmodernity.
"Aquinas and Modernity" is an explicitly anti-Catholic book. Fainthearted readers should brace themselves. The author pulls no punches. At one point, she even demands that Italy occupies the Vatican! I don't agree with every comma in this book. Still, Drury's perspective is interesting. Was Thomas Aquinas really a paragon of Aristotelian reason? Or was he rather another pillar of the Dark Ages?
The question at least needs to be posed.
Aquinas and Modernity: The Lost Promise of Natural Law (Modernity and Political Thought) OverviewIn this startling book, Drury overturns the long-standing reputation of Thomas Aquinas as the most rational exponent of the Christian faith. She reveals that Aquinas as one of the most zealous Dominicans (Domini Canes) or Hounds of the Lord. The book contains incisive criticisms of Aquinas's reconciliation of faith and reason, his defense of papal supremacy, his justification of the Inquisition, his insistence on the persecution of Jews, and his veneration of celibacy. Far from being an antiquarian exercise, Drury shows why the study of Aquinas is relevant to the politics of the twenty-first century, where the primacy of faith over reason has experienced a revival. The current pope, Benedict XVI, relies heavily on Aquinas when prescribing cures for the ills of modernity. For Drury, religion is as incompatible with political moderation and sobriety in our time as it was in the thirteenth century. This is why she defends a secular version of Aquinas's theory of natural law_a theory that he betrayed in favor of what she calls 'the politics of salvation.'

The Anti-Christ ReviewNietzche's "The Anti-Christ" was one of the last books Nietzsche wrote before the onset of his insanity in 1888. Unlike many of Nietzsche's other books, which raise tantalizing questions and examine experience from a variety of angles, some of them contradictory, "The Anti-Christ" is a relatively straightforward presentation of Nietzsche's critique of Christianity. Contrary to what many think, Nietzsche did not advocate the general abolition of Christianity. He thought it served the needs of the majority of people quite well, but believed it had psychologically destructive effects on the minority of people in a society who were most capable of intellectual, artistic, and other achievement.
Mencken was one of the great American prose stylists of the Century, and, as one would expect, his translation of "The Anti-Christ" is an outstanding read. I happen to think it is a far better read than R.J. Hollingdale's translation, which is the one most often used by scholars and students. Whether it is more or less faithful to Nietzsche's original is a question I cannot answer, not being sufficiently fluent in German.
In any event, it's great to see Mencken's much-neglected 1917 translation back in print. The Anti-Christ Overview

The Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau ReviewRousseau's Confessions had been on my book shelf for at least two years before I got motivated to read it. I had started it a few times, but never got beyond the first chapter. I read quite alot, though, and the Confessions seemed to pop up everywhere, in History, Philosophy, and especially in articles on influences in Literature. Flipping through it, it seemed dry and the passages boring and out-of date. But I told myself I must read it, if only to better understand the references that kept drawing from it. Once I got past the first chapter, I found I simply could not put it down. Admittedly, I had the extra advantage of knowing alot about the period in history and the life of Rousseau himself, but that wasn't the magic of the book. It was Rousseau himself who seemed to come alive through the pages. The tortured honesty on every page which excited and shocked me kept me up late every night until I was finished. There were times I simply had to put the book down, catch my breath a little, and think, "Oh My God! I can't believe it!" After, I realized I had finished one of the best reading experiences of my life. It ranked right up there with "The Red and The Black", "Les Mis", "Crime and Punishment" and "Anna Karenina". This book will live through the ages, I had read a hundred times but dismissed it. I only hope you are more trustful than I.The Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau Overview

Life's Too Short to Miss the Big Picture for Women: Making the Most of What's Important ReviewReading this book will leave you feeling like you've just left an enjoyable coffee connection with Kathy Chapman Sharp, where the conversation flows from Chet's Pit Stop to the Louvre Museum and from German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer to the cartoon character Quick Draw McGraw. But most of all, the conversation turns deeper and deeper into the reality of Jesus and his constant presence in our lives.
That's my good friend Kathy, part Renaissance, part Grand Ole Opry, both parts committed to Christ. You will find her engaging, insightful, and Spirit-led. Her book will help you see how Jesus is at work all around you and inside you, and my dear, sister in Christ will become your friend too, helping you see that you are not alone in your journey. Order a Grande, take a deep, relaxing breath, and sit down with Kathy for a few minutes or for the afternoon. She'll leave you comforted in Christ.Life's Too Short to Miss the Big Picture for Women: Making the Most of What's Important OverviewWith a commonsensical mix of passion, honesty, and insight, Life's too Short to Miss the Big Picture for Women is a refreshingly straightforward take on living a life that matters. A raconteur at heart, Kathy Chapman Sharp's stories of faith and spirituality stir readers to embrace life with abandonment, taking hold of an uncommon faith that brings the freedom to be exactly who God created us to be, not who people think we should be. Convinced that everyone has a story to tell and a flashlight to shine on their corner of darkness in the world, Kathy Chapman Sharp speaks frankly and authentically about the messiest parts of living, showing us that it s never too late to learn a lesson and live a life that makes more sense. Her personal stories and insights invite you to examine your life and to dream about living it better. Not one to play it safe, Kathy encourages us not only to take a risk but also to embrace it with all the strength we possess. Seize opportunities. Know your strengths. And don't cave in to uncertainty. Instead, run hard after God and trust his purpose for your life. With such an approach, even the most ordinary days can bring surprising moments of clarity and hope when we see the world through God's eyes and anticipate what he has for us just ahead! Kathy has written the book she wishes someone had given her when she thought she knew it all but really didn't. We seldom think about how short life is. Sometimes we don't figure out that we should be living as if there's no tomorrow until it's too late. That kind of thinking may just push us to living on the edge, but that's okay. According to Kathy Chapman Sharp, if you're not living on the edge, you re taking up too much space anyway.

Holy Gatherings: A Leader's Guide for Engaging the Congregation in Corporate Worship ReviewIn the first chapter of Holy Gatherings, Sharp and Smith use Biblical references to define what "worship" SHOULD look like. Too often the church divides their "worship service" into two parts: the music and the message; and then they divide the Christian's week into two parts: the "service(s)" and the rest of the week. Through the book, the authors show that worship is not about the music, but instead about a lifestyle (and they show Biblical references for their reasoning). The remaining chapters of the book, then describe how to design the entire service around the concept of worship. I would recommend this book for all, especially for a church struggling with the music vs. message balance questions.Holy Gatherings: A Leader's Guide for Engaging the Congregation in Corporate Worship OverviewHelp your church community engage with God through authentic, life-changing worshipFrom Dr. Jon Duncan, Music and Worship Specialist, Georgia Baptist Convention, Atlanta, Georgia:Holy Gatherings is an effective worship education tool that should be on the shelf of every serious worship planner-leader. There are plenty of theological and theoretical discourses on the subject of worship. This work stands apart as it not only deals effectively with the "why" of worship; it serves well as a "how to" field manual that never erodes biblical footing. The result is a relevant work which will strengthen and deepen worship engagement among God's people. From Ron Willoughby, Lecturer in Contemporary Christian Studies, Cliff College, University of Manchester, UK:Finally! A clear, accessible primer on worship leadership. This book rescues worship leadership from the trap of performance-based crowd pleasing and the clutches of sterile worship models. Do yourself a favor: buy this book. Read it. Highlight it. Put it into practice. From Dirce Cooper, International Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention, Worship Leadership Training, CUBA:Beginning with a solid foundation of a biblical understanding of worship, the authors offer practical steps to the designing and leading of corporate worship. Throughout the pathway, probing questions engage the reader in the pursuit of transformative worship. The combined experiences and distinct perspectives of a skillful musician/worship leader and a seasoned theologian/pastor have resulted in a treasure of insights that will serve worship teams as well as serious worship students around the world. From Graham Smith, Director of the Church Music Department, Mississippi Baptist Convention Board:What a blessing to have Dr. Argile Smith and Dr. Michael Sharp combine their many gifts from our Lord, which blest by the Holy Spirit, give such synergy to this much needed book on the highest priority of the human spirit---the worship of our Creator-God! We have needed such a defining book among worshippers and worship leaders for some time. Here, by the grace of God, is a gift from Him to us through these two worshippers and worship leaders! From Will McRaney, Ph.D, Director of Evangelism Strategy, Florida Baptist Convention:As scholars, practitioners, and local churchmen, Argile Smith and Michael Sharp have served us well by providing a great resource to help us worship God and lead others to worship God in both spirit and truth. You will be both inspired and informed by the work of their vast collective experience.

The Little Drummer Boy (Childrens Young Adult Fiction) ReviewI have one book already like this that plays a tune and lights up when you open it (O Little Town of Bethlehem). My kids love it and play/read it all the time. I received this book this week and it doesn't play or light up or do anything. Battery is dead on arrival, or book is non-functional. I am going to find a replacement battery and try that first. Amazon should partially reimburse for the battery if that is the case, as this product should work "out of the box" with the provided book battery. Granville Sharp's Canon and Its Kin (Studies in Biblical Greek) ReviewWell-written, well-researched, and for a technical book, accessible by non-professionals like myself. If you're into Christology, seriously consider getting this book. Granville's life is nothing short of amazing (a good background is provided in this book) and his grammar "Rule #1" is also a thing of beauty. Dr. Wallace does an incredible job narrowing down the specific contexts in which the Rule applies, thus making the Rule all the more powerful. Again, I'm an amateur theologian and absolutely loved reading this. Good footnotes are provided as well for further research. Thanks Dr. Wallace!Granville Sharp's Canon and Its Kin (Studies in Biblical Greek) Overview

THE LIVING ROOM OF THE DEAD (The Ray Sharp Novels) ReviewThis book was a great read. Within a few pages, protagonist Ray Sharp feels like a real person. The descriptions of HongKong and Macau never strain for effect, yet they are incredibly vivid (and accurate, based on my modest HK experience). The plot avoids the tired "then things became implausibly dangerous but the narrator miraculously prevailed in the end" cliche that infests many thrillers. It is terribly gruesome in spots, but if you read through to the author's note at the very end, the sickening parts seem well justified. While this is definitely a "man's book" - the point of view is decisively male and our hero never once bemoans his weight or gets nagged by his mother - it is accessible to a female readership as well; in fact, Ray directly addresses a few issues in a way that seems designed to interest female readers. Finally, the world as narrated by Ray is ideal for a series. The infrequent use of details about Ray's background as fuel for the book's development seems a promising method for avoiding the excessive review that can plague series books. It will be a pleasure to see what Ray encounters in future novels.THE LIVING ROOM OF THE DEAD (The Ray Sharp Novels) OverviewThe first Ray Sharp detective thriller, set in Asia and based on true stories.Introducing Ray Sharp, American expatriate journalist, detective, confused human being just trying to do at least a little something right in the world. Helping out the brother of a colleague, Ray gets tangled up in the sleazy and deadly world of the Russian white slave trade. Based on a true story, the action moves from Hong Kong to Macau to an island brothel run ty the Chinese Navy in the South China Sea and finally to its conclusion in Vladivostok in Russia's wild far east."The Living Room of the Dead is a well-written suspenseful, enthralling, and very uncomfortable book to read... Not a cheerful book, but a compelling book. Gritty and violent, difficult to put down even in the ugly parts. A fine first novel inspired by a true story." - PJ Coldren, Crimespree magazine."The author gives the readers descriptions of HOng Kong, Macau and Vladivostok on a par with Paul Theroux's travel pieces...a successful debut." - Bernard Trink, Bangkok Post“It's enjoyable, all the more so for plotting that is a bit close to the edge sometimes. It's all very "noir", filled with introspection, editorial asides, snide commentary and swearing (impressively in at least three languages.) [Stone] can actually write: the pages turn very quickly." - Peter Gordon, Asian Review of Books.“I was taken for a ride through a slime pit of horrors that had me turning the pages. A very interesting debut. Not for the faint of heart." - Sally Owen, Bookaholic."The Living Room of the Dead is a stylish, fresh take on classic noir themes. You won't soon forget Eric Stone's vivid depictions of Macau and Vladivostok -- or the sad, doomed characters who think they're simply passing through." - Laura Lippman"Auspicious debut thriller by a former journalist who knows the exotic locales whereof he writes: the story is original and compelling, a page-turner with the spare, relentless style of Dennis Lehane or Michael Connelly." - John Farris
