Winning in Emerging Markets: A Road Map for Strategy and Execution ReviewAchieving scale economies and rapid growth in emerging markets requires moving beyond the comfort zone of the top segment (innovators, high income) frequented by American producers and getting directly to the large and growing middle class. This requires the ability to live without credit card systems, TV and radio advertising, relatively easy dispute resolution processes, Internet vendors, "Kelly Blue Book" and "Consumer Reports" reviews of products, and/or developed logistics providers, etc. One must decide whether to replicate, partner with, or innovate around these services.
Examples include Brazil, China, and India requiring twice as many procedures to register a business in 2007 vs. the 6 in the U.S. or 2 in Canada and Australia. Constructing a warehouse took about 200 days in developed nations in 2007, vs. 336 in China, 24 in India, and 704 in Russia. Time to enforce a contract was about 406 days in China, 300 in the U.S. 230 in South Korea, 1,420 in India, and 570 in Canada. Another important issue involves government involvement - degree of corruption, strength of family ties, depth of involvement, etc. Also helpful comparisons of what a new home/apartment buyer gets in China vs. U.S.

Sharpe's Triumph: Richard Sharpe and the Battle of Assaye, September 1803 (Richard Sharpe's Adventure Series #2) ReviewCornwell takes us back to India in this book and the action is as intense as the novels set in Spain and France. These novels focusing on Sharpe's early career are especially interesting because the show him without the support of his Riflemen and without the officer's rank that is the source of much of his pride and many of his problems.
But this is the novel where Sergeant Sharpe suddenly realizes that his ambitions go far beyond his non-commissioned rank. And in making the decision to try to rise to officer he knows that he is consigning himself to an almost certain death, because his only chance to become an officer is through an act of suicidal bravery on the battlefield that is noticed by a senior officer.
The decision to attack at Assaye by Sir Arthur Wellesley gives Sharpe his opportunity. Longtime readers of the Sharpe novels know what he did to get himself promoted at Assaye, and Cornwell does his usual masterful job in describing this horrific, heroic deed.
This book has everything Sharpe fans have come to love, and anyone who has never read this series should gather up their pennies and carve out a few weekends to devour them all. Sharpe's Tiger (Richard Sharpe's Adventure Series #1) ReviewChronologically, this is the first adventure of the war-loving soldier, Richard Sharpe. I am new to the series, but if the first three books are any indication (The India Trilogy), I will read them all.
The author, Cornwell, is a perfect blend of great storyteller and excellent writer. Cornwell's discription of the siege of Seringapatum is beautifully rendered. The reader can feel the heat and exaustion, hear the swish of saber and whine of bullets. Often, in books that deal with military history, the reader may find himself slightly confused as to troops movements and tactics, but not here. Cornell is such a fantastic action writer, that it is all crystal clear. The reader can sense the flow of action, picture the battlefield perfectly, and understand the reasons behind the decisions; and all without hampering the surge of action.
The characters in the novel are particularily well drawn. This is a story with great villians and enemies. Especially enjoyable is Sharpe's nemisis in the novel, the horrid Obadiah Hakewill, Sharpe's sadistic sargent. I also like the author's portrait of The Tippoo Sultan. while it would be hard to call it a sympathetic portrait, Cornwell takes pains to write this enemy in truthful, fascinating strokes.
Just a great piece of work and one of the few books I have read lately that have kept me up all night reading. Onward, Mister Sharpe!Sharpe's Tiger (Richard Sharpe's Adventure Series #1) Overview
