Programming in the Key of C#: A Primer for Aspiring Programmers (Pro-Developer) ReviewLooking for an introduction to C#, I read the reviews here and decided to purchase this book. Unlike a couple of other reviewers here, I already own a DICTIONARY, and so I am aware of what the words PRIMER and ASPIRING mean. Those looking for a book about programming .NET should buy a book titled something like, "Programming .NET." Those looking for a book about using Visual Studio.NET should buy a book titled something like, "Using Visual Studio.NET." A book titled, "Programming In The Key Of C# - A Primer For Aspiring Programmers" should present a primer for aspiring programmers. Gee, go figure.
Through the years, I have programmed in C, Pascal, Fortran, Cobol, Visual Basic, Delphi, various scripting languages in both the Unix and Windows worlds, Cold Fusion, PHP, and Active Server Pages. I wanted to learn C# from the lowest level and move upward from there so I would have a complete understanding of the language as I move towards my final goal of programming Windows and ASP.NET using C#. Having reviewed the TABLE OF CONTENTS made available here, it was easy to tell that this book would be the primer I was looking for. A previous reviewer claims that this book didn't teach him enough about C# syntax. The syntax in C#, although similar to most other object-oriented languages, is unique to C#. This whole book teaches C# syntax, and also goes into a fair amount of detail of how structures, objects, classes, etc. are handled internally in the computer, and by the C# compiler. I know there is another book written by Anders Hejlsberg which is a most complete coverage of the C# syntax, and I will probably end up buying that book as well to use as a reference. To begin learning C#, however, I wanted to begin in a very comfortable and basic place. I have finished this book, I have purchased and am reading a book on programming Windows with C#, and when I am finished with that book, I will buy a new book that is more specific to programming ASP.NET. I will probably buy books specific to ADO.NET, and who knows what else as I become aware of new complexities that I would like to understand.
As a book about learning the basics of programming in C#, Mr. Petzold's book delivers on just what the title implies.Programming in the Key of C#: A Primer for Aspiring Programmers (Pro-Developer) OverviewLearning to program is like learning a musical instrument. It takes dedication, lots of practice, and a great teacher. This primer-created by award-winning author Charles Petzold-focuses on the fundamentals of composing code with C#, an intuitive object-oriented programming language ideal for creating solutions for Microsoft Windows and the Web. Whether you're new to programming or new to C#, you'll quickly build the skills you need to orchestrate your own applications in the key of C#. Discover how to: .Start simple with variables-integers and text strings .Learn the basics of user input and output .Get deeper into data types with decimals and floating point .Explore how Booleans help a program make decisions .Branch, loop, and enumerate to perform selective and repetitive tasks .Prevent your programs from crashing with structured exception handling .Assemble classes from fields, methods, and properties .Extend classes with inheritance, operators, and virtual methods .Store information in data fields .Teach your programs to play music in the key of C#

Sams Teach Yourself Visual C# 2010 in 24 Hours: Complete Starter Kit (Sams Teach Yourself -- Hours) ReviewKeeping in mind that programming is somewhat difficult and complicated to learn, this is a good book. It's true - his code isn't fully optimized or great, but this WILL teach you C#. It's not for the beginner, and it says quite clearly at the beginning. (Though I'm not sure if it's in the description.)
People with a semester or two of any C or .NET language should be able to pick up on anything in this book quite easily, but keep in mind the old saying that goes something like "A wise man hears everyone's opinion, takes his counsel from his closest and most trustworthy friends, and makes his decision by himself."
There's lots of various opinions and alternative ways of doing things in programming, so it doesn't hurt to ask for advice on various message boards, though if worst comes to worst, you won't need it. If you're truly interested in learning C#, there may be a better alternative, but this WILL teach it to you. Good luck to all you potential programmers, and I'll leave you with a little tip that this book doesn't mention. To keep console applications from closing as soon as they compute, without having to hit Ctrl+F5, place
Console.ReadLine();
at the bottom of your application's code.

C# in Depth, Second Edition ReviewOf all the C# books I've read, this is by far my favorite. Anyone who is interested in furthering their knowledge on C# should own this book. All of Jon's explanations are clear and easy to read, and he has obviously spent a painstaking amount of time mastering every detail of the language. More importantly, he takes what could be considered a very dry topic (studying features of a programming language is considered truly exhilarating by few) in subtly injects humorous comments in the text. Besides is surprising thoroughness of his book, this is actually what impressed me the most about his writing.
All this being said, this is not a book for true C# beginners. If you have experience with other languages, such as Java (as it is similar to C#), you'll probably be able to grasp a lot of what Jon talks about as what you know can translate over, but this is not a book which will walk you through learning how to start programming. This should not be the first book you buy. This should be the second. After you've read the first one, throw it out to make room for this one, and buy it. I'm pretty confident to say, this is the only C# book you need. It covers versions 1 through 4, and out does any other book I've read on the subject.C# in Depth, Second Edition Overview

C# How to Program ReviewI had been looking for a C# book which also took care of teaching to exploit all the benefits of the .Net framework. I had stumbled with some books that were too inclined to either the language itself or the .net framework, but this book keeps a good balance between these two topics.
I purchased Professional C# from Wrox, but I saw too many typos in the text and even worse in the code!, so I went ahead and returned it later. I decided to spend some time at the bookstore comparing books and after much deliberation this one won me. I think it was a little bit expensive but it was worth it since it includes clear explanations, visual representation of what the samples do and how they work and best of all, it covers may topics I was interested in like XML, SOAP, Web Services, ASP.NET, etc.
I even liked the two color schema (red and black) in which it is printed.C# How to Program Overview
