Pro Silverlight 4 in C# ReviewThis book is by far the best resource for Silverlight 4.0. In this version the author added a whopping 273 pages to the last edition. He added chapters on File Access and Out-of-Browser Applications. There is also a new section on commands..
I have bought 3 other books on Silverlight 4, and put together they only contain about 1/8 of the value of this book (you can see which ones they are by Googling ".NET Architecture and Development Book Recommendations 2010 End of Year" and checking out the Shiny Turds Books that do not Cut the Mustard section of the post).
One other Silverlight 4 book that is worth getting is Silverlight 4 in Action
It starts out with an introduction that covers the Visual Studio Silverlight environment. He then gives a short introduction to XAML. The introductions really help those who have no experience get rolling right away.
The author covers every out of the box element in detail (including the DataGrid control and a little on the DataForm control), and includes a nice reference for where the element can be found in the book. He also covers styles and templates, brushes and transforms, shapes and geometries, animation, and layout containers.
The book covers out-of-browser applications, assembly caching, networking, multithreading, isolated storage, browser integration, media and deep zoom, wcf services, the application model, file access, commands, and dependency properties and routed events.
One of the things I like best about the book is it includes a lot of references and material on the Silverlight Toolkit.
The book is very readable for those that like to read cover to cover, but it also makes a great reference.
The downloadable code is very usable and very complete.
This is a must have book for any developer working with Silverlight 4.0.Pro Silverlight 4 in C# Overview

Microsoft Windows Communication Foundation Step by Step (Step By Step Developer Series) ReviewThis book is both good and bad. The good is that the author is skilled at explaining complex material in simple straightforward manner and this is a rare skill for computer book authors. Also, the labs are more interesting than the standard "hello world" type of labs. However, like most of the WCF books out now, it is written for Visual Studio 2005 and for XP and not for Vista and Visual Studio 2008. The lab solutions don't even work. The worst is that the author and the publisher have no VS 2008 lab downloads or update notes. Windows Communication Foundation 4 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) ReviewThis is a good resource for learning WCF. It covers a ton of topics and they are shown in the context of real world applications.
The book starts out with a few chapters introducing WCF and Hosting possibilities.
It then contains chapter on securing an enterprise (intranet) as well as what it takes to secure a service exposed to the internet. These are great chapters, but a little confusing when it comes to the certificate deployment to the clients. I also would have like to have seen how to specifically secure Ajax and WPF clients over the internet.
The book then covers transactions, reliable sessions, performance, discovery, routing, REST, asynchronous operations, workflows, state, and data contracts.
The main thing I like about the book is the attempt to show real world situations.
The main thing I thought the book could use was some diagrams (UML or whatever) to help describe the execution of some of the code being explained and to help show some context. I would have also liked to see a complete chapter on just configuration. None of the books I have seen on WCF have very good details on configuration.
The code samples are well organized and very usable.
This is a book that must be read. It is not a quick reference. That is not a bad thing, the explanations are thorough, just not in a quick look up format.
All in all I recommend reading this book. It contains a ton of information and is one of the better WCF 4 books available.Windows Communication Foundation 4 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) Overview
