Cowgirls: Stories of Trick Riders, Sharp Shooters, and Untamed Women ReviewAll the ladies in the Old West were not Bible-thumping housewives, school marms, or ladies of the night. There were also the cowgirls that were trick riders, sharp shooters, gun toters, and ranch bosses. Some saved the vanishing buffalo like Mary Ann "Molly" Goodnight, and others showed belles and cowgirls how to wear pants and sylish boots, and still be feminine. I liked the motto of the Pendleton Roundup in 1911, "Just grit your teeth, get another hold and let 'er buck..." One story alone is worth the value of the book - it seems that Frannie Sperry Steele was selected to ride the killer bull "Red Wing," and she did it well and earned the title of the Lady Bucking Horse Champion of the World at the Calgary Stampede in 1912. What I really liked about this book was that it seemed like fiction with its many hair-raising tales, but it wasn't - it defined some of the strong, independent women of our Western Drama.
