...Until Proven Innocent: A Peter Sharp Legal Mystery ReviewUntil Proven Innocent, Peter Sharp Legal Mystery #5, ISBN: 1882629515, Magic Lamp Press, Paperback 276 pages by Gene Grossman. This novel follows the activities of lawyer Peter Sharp, his ex-wife and District Attorney Myra Scot, his child ward, Suzi Braunstein, a computer wizard daughter of his deceased former partner, and her `assistant', a huge St Bernard called Bernie.
The plot follows his actions in preparing a defense for "Tony the Cop" , a racist "Dirty Harry" type character and Peter's neighbor in the boat marina where he lives. The problem is magnified by the fact that Tony's recently-fired S&W .50 caliber revolver is in his possession with an empty shell in the chamber when the police are called to the scene. The crime scene is a building empty of all but the victim and Tony and the time is late evening.
Along with Peter's attempts at developing a defense, are a series of contacts with others for rather diverse reasons. There are the producer of a motion picture and his associates who require a consultant, Olive, a former telephone sex operator who is being blackmailed, another grossly obese member of the same group with different problems, Stuart Schwartzman, an entrepreneurial friend, Evelyn, and her daughter who is a young starlet in the film production and assorted others.
The author has woven these various individuals and their activities into a well-tailored plot that involves not only the primary theme of a defense for Tony, but implicates a White Supremacy Group and a DVD pirating operation as well. All of the various stories are wrapped-up in a most interesting climax that very nicely ties together all loose ends in a most admiral fashion. The story is a most enjoyable read. Reviewed by John H. Manhold, award winning fiction/non-fiction author.
