Chase ReviewChase by Keisha B. and Mekeba Z. Sharp is a story asking the question, "How would American companies fare if ran by African-Americans?"This story shoots out of the starting gate and speeds along at a rapid pace. In the first few pages, David Joseph is promoted to CEO, set-up for embezzling, then, hauled off to prison.
The premise of Sharp was an excellent one. The idea of how African-Americans would have run companies such as Enron was an enticing one to contemplate. However, that was never covered because the story moved from scene-to-scene without any real build up. I feel that with character development, and lengthier interactions, Chase would make for a compelling read. There were flashes of information about other characters, but before I could know them the story had moved on to others. There were some areas that were fully fleshed-out, such as what clothes the characters were wearing, or cars they were arriving in. However, I never felt a connection to them beyond the superficial. I would have loved to know how the family members felt about what happened to Mr. Joseph and how it impacted their choices. The rapid pace of the book read as though the authors knew the book would end at 146 pages. The ending of the book is a cliffhanger so maybe we will get to know more in the second book.
