Strategic Direction of the Armed Forces ReviewMy purpose in writing this monograph was to examine the strategic direction of or armed forces. First, I describe the role of the Joint Chiefs of Staff up to 1963. I then discuss the events that occurred during the administration of President Johnson. As Commander-in-Chief from 1964 to 1968 I was involved in many of these. Significant decisions made during the Nixon and Ford administrations are also outlined. What follows is not intended to be a complete historical account but rather a desciption of the process by which the United States made decisions regarding the use of our armed forces to attain natonal objectives.
