Employment Law: The Essential HR Desk Reference ReviewEmployment Law makes no claims it cannot fulfill, it says on the cover it's a "desk reference" and that's exactly what it is. It's meant to be used as a reference not to replace general counsel. The book is arranged like an encyclopedia in alpha order by the term. Once you find your term then the book offers a definition, case study in some cases and cross reference of related terms.
Nolo has always been a name I trust when it comes to legal issues. Even their website has helped me with personal issues where clarity was needed. When I first saw the book on Amazon; I made the mistake of overlooking the phrase "Desk Reference". I didn't expect the book to list HR terms and give definitions, but that is exactly what it is nothing more.
As an HR professional I think this book is great for the novice, as well as the seasoned HR professional in need of a quick definition or an explanation of terms. Knowing the terms are great but to use them correctly along with company policies and procedure is needed as well. I respect the fact that under the more complicated terms there's footnotes which offer the reader a tad bit more detail.
Whether you're trying to understand COBRA or what is meant by a "class action suit" it's here. My personal disclaimer is I think this book should be used for what it was intended; a desk reference and not to replace or even be used until your internal counsel arrives.

How to Buy a House in California ReviewYou don't have to live in California to benefit from the advice in this book. It covers a lot of the basics that any homebuyer should know.
The purchase of a home is one of the most important of a person's lifetime. It pays to put in the research needed to get a good price and a good home. The way the topic is covered here is easy to understand and they offer links to several outstanding online resources.
My only complaint is that they did not give much coverage to so-called "short sales". In today's market a lot of sales fall under this category. I think a book like this should probably devote an entire chapter just to that topic.How to Buy a House in California Overview

Social Security, Medicare & Government Pensions: Get the Most Out of Your Retirement & Medical Benefits ReviewIn my line of work, I deal with Social Security, SSI and Medicare rules and regulations every day, so I could be considered a bit of an authority on the subjects. I've always been skeptical of publications that want to "sell" you information that you could otherwise get for free, and this is no exception - nearly all the information on government benefits contained in this book can be obtained free of charge from the source. That said, this is a well-organized and clearly-written book. It will probably appeal to those who would like most or all the information they need in one handy resource, or those who - rightly or otherwise - would rather trust a third party for information that the agencies who administer them. One thing to keep in mind, though - the author of this book is NOT the final authority on the subject. Nevertheless, he does a good job presenting the basic requirements and peculiarities of Social Security, Medicare and government pensions in a clear, "For-Dummies"-style manner. (It should come as no surprise that nearly half the book is devoted to the complexities of the Medicare and Medicaid programs.)
The book gets kudos for its introductory commentary on "saving Social Security" - it criticizes the recommendation made during the Bush administration to "privatize" the system by investing SSA trust funds in the stock market (an idea that all but died with the current recession); and it suggests removing the cap on maximum social security tax (which would not impact lower- and middle-income workers), thus keeping the system solvent for another 75 years. It also offers good explanations on such topics as the so-called "notch babies" (the controversial changes that affected workers born between 1917 and 1921), and figuring out "break even points" when deciding at what point it is most advantageous to collect benefits. The author, who is an attorney, also deserves credit for an objective section on appeals and legal representation - he does not give the reader the impression that an attorney is essential at every step in the claims or appeals process, contrary to what many "social security attorneys" lead the public to believe.
The book isn't without flaws, however. First, it needs to cut or minimize a lot of the discussion of rules that are all but obsolete now, such as rules regarding earnings before 1951 - hardly anyone filing for benefits these days has worked that long ago. There are occasional factual and numerical errors, some of which may have slipped by the updated editing of the book. (For instance, it says that surviving spouses can get full benefits unreduced for age at age 65; the qualifying age is now 66. Also, the book says the SSI limit for countable resources is $5000, when in fact it is $2000 for individuals or $3000 for couples.) Overall, this is a handy reference and general guide to entitlement programs, but it's certainly not the "be-all and end-all". One should always check with the administrating agency (SSA, Medicare, OPM) for the final word on the rules governing entitlement to benefits.

Patent, Copyright & Trademark: An Intellectual Property Desk Reference ReviewOne of the smartest things I ever did was take a class in contract law in college. It was horribly boring, but when I began selling books, I was able to understand publishing contracts and ask smart enough questions to really discuss points with my agent before agreeing to something a publisher wanted.
This is my twentieth year as a published author and Nolo Press's Patent, Copyright & Trademark: An Intellectual Property Desk Reference is even more important to me now than it would have been back before electronic rights stirred everything up. It's far more than I need, but good reference books usually are: it means I can find those obscure details easily and quickly.
With an excellent index and encyclopedia-style setup, it's easy to use and in a weird way, addictive. The book has four parts; Copyright Law, which is my sole interest at the moment, and equally large sections on patent, trademark and trade secret law. The sections each include definitions, forms, statutes and overviews that truly deliver. I find myself reading the definitions in my spare time, and looking up various things in the index as they pop into my brain: like why it's okay to quote a few words from some songs but not from others.
I'm giving the book five stars because I love it. Tax Deductions for Professionals ReviewThis is a great book for a new professional starting their own office. It steps you through all the different types of business structures for professionals and the tax treat of each, in minute detail. Really great book, we're using it to start a law office. The same author has written another great book, Deduct it! Lower your Small Business Taxes. While it is also a great book, I would suggest that you NOT purchase both books. A lot of large sections of text are identical between the two books. For professionals, I'd just go with this one and skip Deduct It!Tax Deductions for Professionals Overview
