101 Razor-Sharp Slide Guitar Blues Licks in Open E Tuning ReviewI am a guitarist who has played in blues and rock bands and I have been working on slide guitar technique. I am very pleased with this book. Everything is here for anyone who wants to learn how to play blues slide guitar licks in the context of a blues band.
The licks are played in actual blues songs that follow standard chord progressions. I have already found ways to work the licks into songs by Muddy Waters, Elmore James, etc. Great book and I recommend it to others.

101 Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Turnarounds book and CD (Red Dog Music Books Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Series) ReviewMy students and I work from several of Larry McCabe's guitar books and find that the books produce consistently high results.
This book, like the others, is exceptionally well crafted, specific in intent, and the guitar lines are accurately written exactly as they are heard on the CD. Larry McCabe books are the work of a dedicated teacher who has achieved a high level of respect nationally in the field of music education.
Larry asked me to write a review for this book, and I am happy to do so. The object of this book is to teach the art of playing blues guitar turnarounds to a guitarist who has some prior experience but is just beginning to explore electric blues.
If a student knows how to bend the strings and perhaps play slurs, slides, and hammers, blues turnarounds are not difficult to play. What is important is to play them authentically and with conviction. This book does a very good job in advancing those objectives.
A component of this book that is quite effective is that every phrase is written in the Key of C. The student should then transpose each lick to other keys, a desirable skill that encourages individual incentive and ability to solve arranging problems.
The turnarounds sound exactly like the ones played on classic blues recordings by the great artists from Chicago and other urban areas.
I know other teachers who swear by Larry's books, and I am one of them. Great book- effective in its aims, ambitious content, fun to work through, and a great value.101 Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Turnarounds book and CD (Red Dog Music Books Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Series) Overview

25 Razor-Sharp Blues and Boogie Guitar Solos (Book and CD) (Red Dog Music Books Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Series) ReviewThe author of this book, Larry McCabe, is re-releasing books that have gone out of print for one reason or another. This particular book is an old friend. After I received it, I went into my library and found a copy. It has been in print in one form or another for 25 years. Most instruction books don't last anywhere near that long. First, this book (as the author warns) is not for beginners. You need to be familiar with the movable blues scales we all use. If you are playing out, and feel comfortable with the whole neck, get this book. The style of lead is closer to Gatemouth Brown and Freddie King than anyone else. If you don't know who these men are, buy their CDs. You are in for a treat. Please read the author's introduction. There is a lot of good info there. The Tab system is the older style. It should take about 30 seconds to adjust. It's actually easier to read than the current form. If you consider yourself a Rock guitarist instead of Blues, you really could use this book. If you use these solos as a "how to", instead of just memorizing them, they will give you some new weapons. You know, for scaring the heck out of other guitarists.
25 Razor-Sharp Blues and Boogie Guitar Solos (Book and CD) (Red Dog Music Books Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Series) OverviewOpen-flat spiral blues instruction book and CD by Larry McCabe
Red Dog Music Books is proud to offer this superb collection of 25 model urban blues guitar solos. This book was Mel Bay's Book of the Month in the June 1984 Guitar Player Magazine, and is still in print.
Blues guitar teachers, serious students, and blues band guitarists will all enjoy his large collection of 100% pure blues and boogie solos for guitar. Twenty-five exciting solos are presented here, each played over its own rhythm progression.
Every solo is transcribed in both standard notation and tablature, and played note for-note with a full band on the professionally recorded companion CD.
Each recorded track contains one chorus of rhythm section only, followed by one chorus with the solo played over the rhythm.
This book is for the guitarist of early intermediate ability level whose interests include authentic, non-commercial blues music, the good stuff that is seldom heard via mass-market channels such as radio and television.
Guitar teachers might use the book to introduce new hand positions, fingerings, chords, and theoretical concepts.
Each solo is made up of many interesting phrases (licks) that can be adapted and incorporated into your own style. The solos are relatively challenging, and can be used in blues jams and on stage.
The solos are in the urban blues style heard on recordings by artists such as Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, James Cotton, Little Walter, BB King, Albert King, John Hammond, Anson Funderburgh, Hubert Sumlin, Little Ed and the Blues Imperials, Pinetop Perkins, Willie Dixon, R.L. Burnside, Butterfield Blues Band, Otis Spann Charlie Musselwhite, Lonnie Mack, Boozoo Chavis, Ry Cooder, Gatemouth Brown, Freddie King, Sonny Boy Williamson, Robert Lockwood, Lonnie Johnson, and similar musicians who recorded for Chess Records, Delmark Records, Sun Records, Alligator Records, Arhoolie Records and other labels that focus on roots music performers and Afro-American music.
The book is an excellent resource for creative blues guitar teachers.
Prospective buyers are encouraged to use the Search Inside Book feature to examine the contents and music pages prior to purchase. Another SUPER COOL and USEFUL music book by Larry McCabe and Red Dog Music Books.

101 Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Fill-In Licks (Book and CD) (Red Dog Music Books Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Series) ReviewWhen I bought this book, I was looking for some new licks. It is a spiral bound booklet with a CD and contains 9 old time simple bluesy type songs. At first when I looked at the book I thought I was being ripped off with another simple simplifed book, but when I worked through some of the licks, I was pleasantly surprised. On the CD, each song is gone through completely and then in sections. Someone sings the words(could be better vocals, but I didn't buy this for the vocals) with accompaniment at a nice pace. In between vocals, the fill in licks are situated. I thought the licks are really good - simple and short, mainly over a lot of dominant 7th chords, and some taken from the Harmonic minor scale which you don't find too often. You can turn down the licks part on the CD if you want to play along with the song. If you are looking for some new licks, this is one book I would recommend.101 Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Fill-In Licks (Book and CD) (Red Dog Music Books Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Series) OverviewOpen-flat spiral blues instruction book and CD by Larry McCabe
Red Dog Music Books is proud to offer this superb collection of 101 authentic urban blues guitar fill-in licks.
Legendary guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, Hubert Sumlin, T-Bone Walker, Johnnie Winter, Albert King, Freddie King, and Chuck Berry are known to all blues fans for their remarkable soloing abilities. But the complete blues guitarist must do more than shine in the solo spotlight. And that is why every great soloist is also a great fill-in player.
Tasteful fill-in licks support and inspire the singer while adding fire and drive to the performance. For example, Blind Lemon Jefferson played string-snapping fill-ins that provided the perfect complement for his rough-hewn blues songs. Both Louis Armstrong and Lester Young seemed to talk to the singer with their finely-crafted, jazzy fill-ins. And Henry Sunflower Vestine's stinging, buzzsaw fill-ins never failed to drive his Canned Heat bandmates into a psychedelic frenzy.
This book is accompanied by a user-friendly split-track CD allows you to sit in with a professional blues band while you learn to play blues fills behind a great singer, Charles Atkins. The Heat-Seeking Missile Blues Band is heard on the left channel; the fill-in licks are isolated on the right channel.
This is not just another book of abstract how do I use these licks in real life? licks, but a collection of solid musical ideas that can be applied to thousands of real songs.
Another fine contribution from Red Dog Music Books, designed for the early intermediate-or better guitarist. Some of the licks are accessible to highly motivated near-beginners, and the book is an excellent resource for teachers.

101 Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Rhythm Patterns in the Electric Urban / Chicago Style (Book and CD) (Red Dog Music Books Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Series) ReviewI have used Larry McCabe's instruction books for years with my music students, with good results, so I picked up a copy of this new book last month to use in my teaching studio. My students are enjoying the book very much and so am I. It is quite a nice book and CD, unique in format and impressive in its instructional design and educational goals.
As the product description mentions, these are the patterns that are played on authentic blues recordings. I have not seen as complete a collection of blues guitar rhythm patterns in another book. This is a comprehensive manual of urban blues rhythm patterns.
The book is designed in a workbook/reference format that encourages the participation of the user in transposing, and applying, the patterns to standard eight-and twelve-bar blues chord progressions.
Each pattern is demonstrated on the I, or tonic chord, in C major. Clear instructions are included that encourage the user to apply the pattern to other root tones, and also to "entire" blues progressions (I7-IV7-V7), such as the blues progressions found in real songs.
One great thing about this book is that it motivates the user to form decisions regarding appropriateness of application, or use, in real blues songs. It is not a book for the lazy person who expects spoonfeeding, or a beginner who is satisfied with note-by-note copying of someone elses playing. To put it more bluntly, this book might not be useful for guitar students who fall into the "dumb" category. The format is designed for the guitarist who wants to learn to think for himself or herself, and who wants to learn by doing.
I am showing my better students how to apply the patterns to real songs, and more importantly, I am teaching them to teach themselves how to apply the patterns to real songs, which is the overall instructional objective of the material.
The patterns cover many positions on the fingerboard, up to the twelfth fret. Each pattern is written in the same key, C, for ease of analysis and comparison. It is a smart idea to present the material this way, again, because the user is encouraged to learn to transpose the examples to entire progressions, various keys, and songs having different types of rhythms.
Even though most urban blues rhythm patterns are fairly easy to play from a technical viewpoint, this book would not be appropriate for a beginner. A beginner's focus is necessarily on mastering basic technique, not original application. This book encourages creative thinking and decision making. It is a book for ambitious students having early intermediate, or better, skills.
A player with light experience, or lack of motivation, or inability to read instructions, might be confused by this book's goals. The exercise of musical application requires original thought, motivation, and experimentation. Thus, this is not a book for uninspired folks whose ability, ambition, and conceptual grasp is limited to copying note-for-note guitar licks and patterns.
The professionally mixed CD is clearly recorded, and remarkably, contains every pattern, each recorded at a moderate tempo. Commendable effort.
The book also contains a valuable appendix covering Basic Types of Blues Rhythm Patterns; 12-Bar Progressions in the Major Keys (with variations provided); 12-Bar Progressions in the Minor Keys (with variations provided); Open Charts for Application of Patterns.
I highly recommend this impressive and useful book for any emerging guitarist who wants to "learn by imitating-and then doing." Fellow teachers with motivated guitar students, take a look at this one. Five stars.101 Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Rhythm Patterns in the Electric Urban / Chicago Style (Book and CD) (Red Dog Music Books Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Series) Overview
