Spider-Man: The Next Chapter - Volume 1 Review"The Next Chapter" collects the reboot of Amazing Spider-Man and Peter Parker books from 1999. It includes the following:
- Amazing Spider-Man 1-6 with art by John Byrne
- Peter Parker: Spider-Man 1-6 with art by John Romita Jr. (Bart Sears fills in for issue #5.)
- Annual '99 with art by the great John Buscema
- Thor #8 (story by Dan Jurgens, art by John Romita Jr.)
- Supplemental material (4-page rebirth of the Scorpion story, 4-page John Byrne story titled Secrets of Spider-man, John Romita Jr. sketch art, a 3D design of Peter Parker's apartment by John Byrne, a 6-page "Memories" story about Uncle Ben)
Stories are mostly written by Howard Mackie, who does an ok job, but is far below the quality of writers like J. Michael Straczynski and his long run later in the Amazing Spider-man series. The storyline picks up after Peter Parker decides to retire from being Spider-Man. The book tracks Peter's new life as an average citizen while he continues to run afoul of super-villains, and struggles with his decision to retire. So who tackles the villains that appear? Spider-Man! And that's the mystery Peter tries to unravel in this collection.
The pages are high-quality glossy paper, which allows the colors to jump off the page. As you can see from the list above, there's a lot of content in this collection; a good value for the money. The story weaves back and forth between the Amazing and Peter Parker books, so it's great that this collection includes the entire storyline.
John Romita Jr's art is top-notch, but while Byrne's generally reliable work is fine, it's not his best stuff here. Still, it is John Byrne, so fans of his work will appreciate it. Overall, not a bad collection (though it never reaches the heights of a story like Kraven's Last Hunt), so if you're a Spider-man fan, it's worth picking up.Spider-Man: The Next Chapter - Volume 1 Overview

Testament VOL 03: Babel ReviewThis latest installment of Douglas Rushkoff's Testament is as engaging and compelling as the first two. The collection has three Bible stories woven into one modern narrative. In the Job story that opens, Rushkoff plays with time-space a little more, and The Rape of Dinah story is a little more loosely materialized, but both are very interesting and imaginative works of fiction. The four part story of Babel is profound in many ways.
My intent is not to spoil any of the story, because as the other two compilations have shown, even though you might know the Bible, don't think you know what happens next in Testament. This surreal and interesting interpretation of the Bible-as-modern has re-enlivened my interest in this most wonderful ancient text. (And I am not a Christian.) Kudos to Rushkoff for this amazing piece of storytelling, and kudos to him for being brave enough to weave other ancient gods and traditions into the simulation that is our lives. (Joseph Campbell would be proud.) This series has become one of my favorite comics, and better yet, one of my favorite works of contemporary fiction in a very short time.Testament VOL 03: Babel Overview

Star Trek: Year Four (Star Trek (IDW)) ReviewThis is a great book. It really has the characterizations down pat. From McCoy saying "He's dead Jim" many times to the banter between Kirk, Spock and Bones, these stories have the feel of left-over scripts from the original series. The art is somewhat cartoony at times but it works. There is one instant classic panel which shows Kirk in his melodramatic pose of being in pain from an unseen force that will incite instant laughter from any fan of the show. The word balloons even have the emphasis on certain words in Kirk's dialogue to incorporate the immortal melodramatic cadence of William Shatner. Buy this book now, you'll love it. 5 stars.Star Trek: Year Four (Star Trek (IDW)) Overview

Star Trek Omnibus: The Original Series ReviewReviews for the other Star Trek Omnibus collections have not been (ahem) stellar, but this is an excellent collection, well worth the low price of owning it. From the awesome artwork on the front and back covers, to the stories inside, there's enough here to delight any Star Trek fan, and any comicbook fan.
Leading off the volume is "Klingons: Blood Will Tell," written by the Tipton brothers, with art by David Messina. This is a massive and amazing story, looking from the Klingons' perspective on all of the Klingon/Human encounters portrayed in the Original Series television show. The art is incredible, and the story gives new insight into the motivations of the Klingon commanders we think we know so well.
Next is "Star Trek: Year Four," a sequence of one-shot episodes of mixed quality. Some of them feature the exquisite art of Gordon Purcell, Trek artist extraordinaire, while others...don't. The stories are okay, but nothing to write home about. One interesting tale involves the crew becoming the cast of an interstellar reality show! Yeah, I know.
These are followed by four "Alien Spotlight" stories, on the Vulcans, the Gorn, the Orions, and the Romulans. These are by different writer/artist teams (including legend of comicbook art, John Byrne) and they are uniformly awesome. Adventures span from the days of Christopher Pike, all the way to Captain Terrell on the Reliant, and they are rollicking good fun.
The book closes with "The Enterprise Experiment," which is a solid and enjoyable tale of the Enterprise crew tracking down a mystery that involves the Organians and the Preservers, two key races from the Original Series. The art is excellent, and the story is engaging, as the crew races against time to keep the Klingons from acquiring the technology of the Preservers.
A somewhat mixed bag, but the great far outweighs the good or the weak. Highly recommended.Star Trek Omnibus: The Original Series Overview

Testament VOL 01 Akedah Review"the most assured and original project to emerge from Vertigo since SANDMAN." - Comic Buyer's Guide
"Make no mistake, The Greatest Story Ever Told continues right here?" - Grant Morrison
"A stunning, richly entertaining book!" - Robert Anton Wilson, co-author "The Illuminatus! Trilogy"
"Rushkoff is one of the great thinkers - and writers - of our time!" - Timothy Leary
"Impossible to put down... chock full of cool, forward-looking ideas. Grade: A" - VARIETY.COM
"Intriguing! Well worth the time to check out." - AIN'T IT COOL NEWSTestament is a book about Humanity and Gods and the struggle between Evil and Good. The book moves seamlessly between three different times and planes of existence, which are Modern Present time (but it is set slightly in the future), Past Historical Biblical time, and the supernatural Realm of the Gods.
In the modern/future present time there are three major events taking place. One being the fact that the government requires that people have computer chips implanted in their bodies. The second is the emergence of artificial intelligence that has been created by a computer scientist but unfortunately has escaped from his computer into the Internet. The third event is a major corporation is beginning a move to usurp power by changing currency/money into a new very different form that I don't believe has been revealed yet but it sounds very spooky.
So basically there are college aged radicals who have refused to have the chips implanted and are living outside the law. One of these is the son of the creator of the computer chips, who when creating them had no notion that the government would actually use the chips beyond what he or most others believed was acceptable in a way I'll just say reminiscent of the Kent State Massacre on May 4 1970.
So what is taking place in the present events is a reflection of what had taken place in the Bible. Rushkoff does a few things here that I feel need mentioning, he shows us stories from the Bible but he doesn't either show them as or disregard their being sacred events, obviously he believes they are important because they are illustrations of the Gods attempts to influence humanity, but he tells both the modern and those past in a way that makes them both entertainingly modern, relevant, and human.
Basically the story jumps back and forth between what is happening "Now" and what happened in the Bible. Instead of Just God and Satan Rushkoff has Krishna the Hindu God on the side of good along with the Christian God or more specifically the Jewish God (because the comic only has to do with the old testament) and the Evil Gods I think are Egyptian, Hindu and third is Jewish. Like every character in the story the Gods are thankfully multidimensional that is to say they don't come across as 100 percent pure good or pure evil.
Douglas Rushkoff, uniquely qualified to write such a book, outside of comics might be consider a Futurist or a Media Guru, at least an expert on such topics in addition to Judaism, which he wrote a book on called "Nothing Sacred: The Truth About Judaism" I've seen him on panels on CNN and speaking at Disinformation counterculture conferences, he is a what most would considered a modern day Renaissance Man. He writes books on Ecstasy eating Ravers, advises the United Nations, plays keyboards in the radical group Psychic TV, and writes comic books.
A Great story that makes one think about what these stories may actually be and makes one question what is the current real world's spiritual significance.
My review is based on the first 9 issues I've read only once but am looking forward to rereading them again.Testament VOL 01 Akedah Overview

Gears of War Book One (Gears of War (Wildstorm Hardcover)) ReviewBeing a comic book fan and a video game fan I most admit a bias towards Video Game comics. That aside this was a most enjoyable purchase. The art is terrific, the story is engaging and the new characters that are introduced are unique and a good fit in the Gears universe. Being a hardcover it looks great on the shelf and stands a much better chance of survival in a house with a one year old. I can't count how many comics I have that have lost covers or pages or have faded, just from being transported around to different homes and being read. Funny I know, reading a comic book and not stuffing it in mylar and never taking it out. I enjoyed Book 1 of Gears of War and eagerly await Book 2Gears of War Book One (Gears of War (Wildstorm Hardcover)) Overview

Testament Vol. 2: West of Eden (Testament) ReviewIf you liked where the first volume was going, pick this up. It is a great read.Testament Vol. 2: West of Eden (Testament) OverviewFrom the imagination of best-selling author Douglas Rushkoff, one of the most icono-clastic and acclaimed minds of our era, comes a graphic novel series that exposes the "real" Bible as it was actually written, and reveals how its mythic tales are repeated today. Young Alan Stern may have created life -- inside his laptop. Now, he's about to discover the terrible consequences of playing God.
