C# for Dummies (With CD-ROM) ReviewAlthough the "Dummies" title implies a "Beginner" book, this book falls into the "Beginner to Intermediate Developer" range. This is a good book for Visual Basic developers who want to make the conversion to C# or for the beginner. Like all Dummies series, there are ample examples and the author does a great job of explaining the C# language. Windows forms are covered in Chapter 17 and 18 but there is no discussion about Web development or using C# with Active Server Pages (ASP).
Starting in Chapter 6 (Collecting Data - The Class and the Array) there are several really annoying errors, for example, on page 105 the author uses "for (int i = 0; i < 11; i++)" to iterate thru a 10 element array. In the section below this (Array bounds checking), the author uses exactly the same code and says this will fail. The first code should be "for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++)". These errors are scattered through out the book. Still this is a good book and I would highly recommend it.C# for Dummies (With CD-ROM) Overview

Beginning C# Object-Oriented Programming ReviewDan Clark, A Microsoft MVP ("Most Valued Professional") and highly prized trainer obviously has an exceptionally strong interest, in educating neophytes and people whose education in programming was prior to the current object-oriented focus in both the conceptual foundation, design and in-code implementation of object-oriented concepts. He has succeeded marvelously in educating in object oriented design and programming particular in C# and within the .NET framework in this exceptional volume. He begins with a careful explanation of the object oriented philosophy as well as design using basic UML architectural modeling tools. He then proceeds with a case study in these methods that is given at first pass in Chapter 4 (further detailed implementation of this complete sizable application is postponed (appropriately) to Chapter 14. Even the logical flow of chapters has obviously been well-thought out--in Chapter 5 he gives a detailed explanation of those features of the .NET framework and Visual Studio which are useful in constructed and debugging object-oriented programs (since these features might be unfamiliar to programmers not coming from the Microsoft camp)--but for non-object oriented basic
features of the language he provides the requisite summary in Appendix A of the book. Additional useful features of the huge C# language
and .NET framework relevant to object-oriented programming such as data access, working with collections, object collaboration and Windows and Web Services of .Net are provided and exquisitely explained in the later chapters of the book. This excellent tutorial on Object-Oriented Design, Programming, and the specific Object-relevant features of C# is an important addition to my Software Engineering library. For anyone new to Objects and their effective use, whether a programming novice or someone like myself who was educated in the days of Fortran and Pascal will get a clear, succinct yet comprehensive view of Object-Oriented Programming and effective use of C# and the .NET Environment.

C#.net Web Developer's Guide (With CD-ROM) ReviewThis is a really good book for developing applications for the Web. There is a short primer on the C# Language at the beginning of the book but its primary focus is on .Net Technologies including: Web Forms, MSMQ, Remoting, ASP.NET and Web Services.
Although each of those topics could be entire book by itself this book explain the basic functionality and provides excellent tutorials(with source code examples)C#.net Web Developer's Guide (With CD-ROM) Overview

Beginning C# ReviewYep after months and months of ranting and criticizing that the red book publishers (Wrox) have lost their magic touch, just when we were about to give up on them, they return with an outstanding book, probably one of the best in their Beginning series ever, and coming back in form in such style, this is simply unbelievable - Beginning C# is all I needed.
Working as a developer in ASP for over 3 years now, but never actually having tried my hands in a real hardcore programming language, I bought EACH AND EVERY book on C# being published since the past one year, but couldn't get past the 40th page of any of the books, they were designed for hardcore programmers and for a moment I wondered if Microsoft and other authors were leaving pure ASP programmers down the drain.
Beginning C# is the answer to all the prayers if you've faced the same delima as I have.
First the drawbacks.
Someone at wrox has decided that publishing a book less than 1000pages is a crime.so I guess I can let go of that. This book has 1031 pages.
Having multiple authors at times irritatingly breaks the smooth flow of explanations from chapter to chapter. GDI+ may be understanding enough as a chapter but the manner of explanations and approach to "try it out" examples is suffocating, irritating and makes you want to tear the entire chapter out of the book.
Also some examples are NOT WORKING and THIS CAN GET YOU FRUSTRATED, so be WARNED.
The plus points.
25 chapters, precise to the point, length of each chapter kept under 25 to 30 pages. Basic aim of each chapter is to explain the topic and right away get your hands dirty with examples. Each example explained step by step.
OOP being an integral part of C# comes only on Ch#8 after you have grown sufficiently confident enough to open Visual Studio and write basic programs for Windows/Web.
This according to me is a very intelligent planning of chapters and hence non of the chapters come across as speaking to you in a foriegn language or in a manner of saying that "sorry if you don't understand us , you are an idiot"....
This book can be held at the same high teaching standards set by Beginning ASPDatabases/Beginning ASP/Beginning JavaScript.
The only other book which even comes close to this is C# By Herb Schildt. Which is another exceptionally good book for beginners, though it does not touch the wide range of topics as Beg.C#
With this book Wrox is back in form.
Simply put... An Amazing Achievement....Beginning C# Overview

Jamsa's C/C++/C# Programmer's Bible ReviewI bought this book after doing some research for a good C++ book. I had decided on a completely different title when I discovered this one on the shelf and I bought it instead.
This book is not "light reading" by any stretch of the imagination. It is instead almost 1200 pages of fact after fact about C, C++ and C#. It is divided up into sections and subsections, covering first the C language, then moving on to C++, and finally introducing C#. Under each language the author has gone into very deep details about even some of the most obsure topics, making everything very accessible with example code and detailed explanations about the topics he is addressing. The reader will be hard-pressed to come away with a lack of understanding.
The coverage of standard language constructs is very deep. The C++ coverage includes a lengthy section for STL topics, writing your own templates. These are hot topics and the coverage will not disappoint.
Where this book really shines is, as stated above, its depth in coverage. While not exhaustive, it covers some topics in so much detail that a reader will have no doubts regarding the functionality available.
Some of the material is very dated. For example, there is a hefty section about memory model programming, dating back to the 16-bit OS days. For a huge majority of us, this information is historical in value. Anyone still working in the 16-bit world will benefit more. Another section that shows its age involves direct screen writes, again going back to the days prior to 32-bit Windows.
This book has one flaw, in my opinion, and it's that it's geared towards Windows developers. I suppose the C# aspect is indicative of that for now, but other more fundamental operations, such as spawning child processes, are discussed in a very Windows-centric way. I think the book would have been perfect if there was some contrasting information for the way UNIX and Mac handle this kind of operation.
For the Windows developer, there are several sections adding up to over 250 pages that discuss Windows application development. AFTER that, it plunges into .NET topics, giving an excellent primer.
Although this book is geared towards Windows developers, much of it can be applied to other platforms. It is an outstanding book for its coverage of the languages it targets and should be considered when searching for a book on C or C++.Jamsa's C/C++/C# Programmer's Bible Overview

Microsoft Visual C# 2005 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) ReviewThis is an excellent resource for learning C#/.NET. It covers the basics of the language and then eventually heads into more advanced topics such as ADO.NET, ASP.NET, etc. Like with any book, the more you know coming in, the more you can take advantage of it, but I would say that even someone new to programming can get a lot out of this book.
Good Stuff:
1) Each topic in parts 1-4 is covered in a step by step fashion with plenty of examples to help you learn by doing.
2) Excellent summary for each chapter highlighting key points in a tabular format including mini code examples. This is by far one of the best way of doing a summary in a programming book I've seen.
3) You can do 99% of the examples with MS Visual C# Express Edition which is free. So you don't need to go out and buy Visual Studio 2005.
4) The books is broken up into 6 parts and this organization is well thought out. Parts 1-4 pretty much cover the language, Part 4 covers how to use Windows Forms with C#, Part 5 covers how to use ADO.NET with C# and finally Part 6 covers ASP.net.
5) Good topic coverage for a beginner book.
Stuff that could have been done better:
1) My primary frustration with this book is the many typographical errors. The errata list is bigger than what I would like to see and it wasn't even exhaustive. I found many errors not on the errata and even though I submitted them, I got no response. Make sure you print out the errata and keep it with u while u read.
2) There is no coverage of how to use C# with XML, nor is there coverage on File I/O, streams etc. It would have been good to have chapters on these topics. I think they're more important that covering ASP.NET.
3) Part 5 (ADO.NET) is not that good. The way that ADO.NET is explained is not as step by step as the previous 4 parts. The order in which things are done does not lend well to explaining the concepts. For ex: the first thing the author does is have you run a command line SQL script to modify a pre-existing database. Some more basic parts of ADO.NET such as how to create a database from scratch in Visual Studio are not covered at all. You would think that this is what would be done first. The chapters on ADO.NET could have been written in a much better way, preferably one that assumes little to no prior knowledge of a database. Nonetheless, to have ADO.NET coverage at all in a book at this level is good.
4)Part 6 covers ASP.NET. There are four chapters on this topic which quite qood considering this is not an ASP.NET book. Don't expect to get a good understanding of ASP.NET however, as ASP.NET cannot be understood well in such brevity.
Bottom Line:
I recommend adding this book to your arsenal if you plan on learning C#. It covers the language in adequate detail in a step by step fashion. C# Weekend Crash Course (With CD-ROM) ReviewA one star rating is an overstatement of the value of this book. I believe the 15 hours is the time the author spent learning the language.
It is not of value to beginning or experienced programmers. It does not serve well as either a review or an introduction. The examples are poorly chosen, (banking account), poorly explained. The other examples are lacking in clarity.
Even when something that one knows well from other languages, such as the difference between ++i and i++ is mentioned - it is a mention without an example in a loop or a clear explanation.
Look elsewhere to get started in C++. 15 hours would be too long to spend with this book. This was my first look at a "Crash Course"...... it looks like a train wreck.C# Weekend Crash Course (With CD-ROM) Overview

C# Bible ReviewFirst of all, let me state that this is not my first C# book. So I can't offer the perspective of someone who is new to the language and wants to learn it from this book. My objective for buying this book was to expand my C# library with a book covering some advanced features of the language.
Simply stated, this is a good book filled with useful information that comes at a very reasonable price. I don't think it's a "comprehensive" reference to C# (what book is?) and it doesn't go into great depth on any one topic. But it does offer a very broad cross-section of the language.
Since I've purchased the book I've found myself opening it to find out information that is not clearly explained in the MSDN library and not mentioned at all in other books. And the majority of the time, that information was covered in this book in a simple, succinct manner. For example, very few books out there cover asynchronous I/O in C#, but C# Bible devotes 6 pages to the topic - with sample code.
For the price, this book is a worthwhile addition to your C# library.C# Bible Overview
