Interaction Design: Beyond Human - Computer Interaction ReviewThis was one the required books for a HCI course. But I admit this books gives a big head start to anyone wanted to get in to HCI field. mix this with Shneiderman's and Donald Norman's series, and I am sure you have already made it out of the novice stage of the field!
Everything is explained straightforward and the book covers almost everything needed for a beginner and an intermediate reader.

Rudgyard Story: Hand Knitting Collection ReviewIn my opinion, the author has used many colurful combination of yarns within her designs, yet she has implemented common patterns within her designs. This book would be good for a beginning knitter, to help the knitter gain confidence in knitting with different yarn combinations. Windows Communication Foundation 4 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) ReviewThis is a good resource for learning WCF. It covers a ton of topics and they are shown in the context of real world applications.
The book starts out with a few chapters introducing WCF and Hosting possibilities.
It then contains chapter on securing an enterprise (intranet) as well as what it takes to secure a service exposed to the internet. These are great chapters, but a little confusing when it comes to the certificate deployment to the clients. I also would have like to have seen how to specifically secure Ajax and WPF clients over the internet.
The book then covers transactions, reliable sessions, performance, discovery, routing, REST, asynchronous operations, workflows, state, and data contracts.
The main thing I like about the book is the attempt to show real world situations.
The main thing I thought the book could use was some diagrams (UML or whatever) to help describe the execution of some of the code being explained and to help show some context. I would have also liked to see a complete chapter on just configuration. None of the books I have seen on WCF have very good details on configuration.
The code samples are well organized and very usable.
This is a book that must be read. It is not a quick reference. That is not a bad thing, the explanations are thorough, just not in a quick look up format.
All in all I recommend reading this book. It contains a ton of information and is one of the better WCF 4 books available.Windows Communication Foundation 4 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) Overview

Value Shift: Why Companies Must Merge Social and Financial Imperatives to Achieve Superior Performance ReviewI give great credit to Lynn Paine for framing the importance to organizations on making "social/ethical" issues a top priority. I loved the first chapter. However, she stays at a high level. When it comes time to provide action steps for companies to act ethically and develop and manage an ethical culture, she falls short by only providing a few questions relevant to executives by which, if ask and answered honestly, would provide a leader a "moral compass."
As we have seen in the press, it is not always the senior executives who perform ethical misconduct. Quite often it is the managers and employees of an organization that make unethical decisions that put the organization in harms way. So my disappoitment is in that she did not provide practical (and I stress practical) strategies, processes and tools for an organization to provide its workforce to adress the dozens of potentiallly unethical situations managers and employees face everyday that provide the same risk, if not more, than a few bad decisions by executives. The questions that she provides for executives are not practical for managers. I doubt a manager at a manufacturing plant will take the time to "reflect" on the thought-proviking questions provided by her to help make good decisions. She offers several examples of companies that she considers are making progress, but these steps are still at a very high level.
I offer an insight. There is a reason why the books "Execution" by Larry Bossidy and "Good to Great" are best sellers. Executives are asking for more actionable and practical guidelines to execute strategies in companies that already have established processes and cultures.
It is obvious that Lynn Paine has great insight and vast experience. I would like to have seen actual steps (i.e., training, communications, proceses, standards) by which a current organization, with an established culture, can leverage to shape their culture to fit this new ethical standard.
