Sharpshooter ReviewKit Prate has woven a western tale of how young Clete Benteen grows up in a hurry after seeing his father brought home face down across his horse. He'd been shot in the back by a bushwacker who also stole Clete's fathers boots, Bowie knife and Sharps. Young Benteen leaves home to ride for Judge Terril, known as the Patron. It's during this time that he choses to ride the vengence trail. Is he old enough to see his decision through to the end?Sharpshooter OverviewClete Benteen was a kid one minute and a man the next. The son of a sharpshooter, he grew up when his pa was brought home across the back of a horse, back-shot. Making a place for himself among hard cowboys, Clete must use all the skill he has to provide for his family and to find his Pa's killer. But is he tough enough to survive?

The Winning of Barbara Worth ReviewReclamation, engineering, and irrigation are topics that do strike me as terribly piquant. I wouldn't have believed that a novel devoted to such subject matter could be so interesting, but Harold Bell Wright can manipulate the English language in a way equaled by very few other authors. As the desert becomes a thriving community, the reader is right there actually taking part in all the transmutations.
With his usual multi-dimensional characters and the plot's rococo developments, the story thoroughly captivates as it moves quickly through its exciting labyrinth.
Those familiar with Wright's earlier books (Shepherd of the Hills, The Calling of Dan Matthews, and That Printer of Udells) will be in for a surprise. While they all prominently featured ministers, this book is clergyman-free and makes only minor references to religion. Still this equally wholesome read is subtitled as "the Ministry of Capitalism," and its portrayal of ethical business dealings, employer-employee loyalties, and the costs of progress make this work from the early twentieth century vitally relevant to the early twenty-first century.
I do agree with the bottom reviewer who pointed out that this page's book description boasting illustrations, an introduction and a preface (none of which exist in this version) does not apply. The Winning of Barbara Worth Overview

Sara Bear ReviewI had to quit reading this about a third of the way through. I was still waiting...reading to find out more about Sara, what made her the way she was, how she learned to do all that she did, how old she was, what she looked like, SOMETHING besides that she was a white woman escaping from some Indian tribe! The novel feels like a technical manual of how to take care of yourself in the mountains with nothing but a knife and a lot of luck. There was NO character development. The author needs an editor, as it is full of grammar and punctuation errors. I'd say it's a good first draft with possibilities to become something better, but for myself, I don't want to waste any more time on it.Sara Bear OverviewThe story of Sara Bear takes you on an in depth and intriguing journey full of action, mystery, murder, and adventure. It is the story of a young woman raised by Indians in the American wilderness of the 1840's. She escapes her violent husband and tries making her way east.Shortly after her journey begins, she comes across the remains of a hostile attack against a family's wagon. As the father lay dying, he asks Sara to help his four children make it to safety. Sara reluctantly agrees and the children soon learn that without her help, they would be lost for sure. After another attack on their party, Sara begins to think there is something suspicious about the children's situation. Finally the travelers arrive at an outpost, but Sara learns that they are unable to help. They do, however, offer to escort her to the railhead where she can get passage to Philadelphia for her and her party. Once there, Sara is hoping to reunite the children with the relatives of the slain parents, thus fulfilling her promise.Sara soon finds that her life becomes intertwined with her newly adopted family as she uncovers a string of events involving the children's parents, their relatives in Philadelphia, and a pair of foreign assassins. Sara and the children return to the western wilderness new members from Philadelphia where they establish a ranch and begin work on making a new life for themselves. However, the trouble does not end there as hired Comanchero's are still on the lookout for the children and other family members.
