The Midwife's Apprentice ReviewThis slim novel begins with a scrawny young girl sleeping in a dung heap. The heroine, who is nameless as well as homeless, uses the dung for heat, a decision that Jane Sharp, the town's midwife, recognizes as a clever one. Jane hires the girl and names her Beetle, for dung beetle.
Beetle is a smart, compassionate girl, but a timid one, too. She allows Jane Sharp to boss her around and the local boys to tease her mercilessly.
Karen Cushman chose the England of the Middle Ages as a setting for the book, and has researched the subject exhaustively. We learn about village life, medicine, feudal structure, and the place of women in that society. Most enjoyable to follow is Beetle's progress from a scared, meek little girl to a self-assured young woman who has chosen her own name: Alyce.
While not romanticizing Alyce's situation, Cushman makes it clear how much more is available to her than to upper class women of her time. At the end of the book, Alyce chooses her own future from several options. She selects the life that will allow her the most independence. With a name and a career of her own choosing, Alyce has come far indeed from the dung heap.The Midwife's Apprentice Overview

The Barn at Gun Lake (Tuitel, Johnnie, The Gun Lake Adventure Series, Bk. 1.) ReviewI am 17 and have cerebral palsy. I've known Johnnie Tuitel for many years, so I was pleased to see his books. I was even more pleased to see how his sense of humor and adventure shines through in his writing. It's very refreshing to find someone who can express the frustrations and triumphs everyone with CP (or any disability, for that matter) runs into, and Johnnie and Sharon do it in such a way that Johnnie Jacobson (the main character) still seems like just one of the gang at Gun Lake. But the best part is thedelightful photos of koalas at sleep, play, and the dinner table. I left out "work" because it doesn't seem to be in their vocabulary. One or two of the views of relaxing, snoozing koalas are alone worth the price of the book. Instead of reciting a mantra or meditating to relax, all you need do is look at those photos. A book for all ages.Koala Book, The OverviewIt's no secret that koalas are some of the best-loved creatures in the animal kingdom. Now for the first time, the koala's story is portrayed in a large format with 160striking photographs and accompanying text. The Koala Book describes the native forests before the onset of human settlement. Only in some of the old-growth forests such as Wild Cattle Creek can one catch a glimpse of how koalas might have lived. The lovable koala's physical attributes are then discussed, covering everything from its paws and claws to its backward opening pouch.Maps illustrate its population and range.
