The Midwife's Apprentice ReviewThis slim novel begins with a scrawny young girl sleeping in a dung heap. The heroine, who is nameless as well as homeless, uses the dung for heat, a decision that Jane Sharp, the town's midwife, recognizes as a clever one. Jane hires the girl and names her Beetle, for dung beetle.
Beetle is a smart, compassionate girl, but a timid one, too. She allows Jane Sharp to boss her around and the local boys to tease her mercilessly.
Karen Cushman chose the England of the Middle Ages as a setting for the book, and has researched the subject exhaustively. We learn about village life, medicine, feudal structure, and the place of women in that society. Most enjoyable to follow is Beetle's progress from a scared, meek little girl to a self-assured young woman who has chosen her own name: Alyce.
While not romanticizing Alyce's situation, Cushman makes it clear how much more is available to her than to upper class women of her time. At the end of the book, Alyce chooses her own future from several options. She selects the life that will allow her the most independence. With a name and a career of her own choosing, Alyce has come far indeed from the dung heap. The Midwife's Apprentice Overview

Tom Swift & His Airship ReviewThis book was originally released in about 1910. The Airship is a kind of dirigible. Remember, this is before the Wright Brothers' flight. Old as these books are, they are full of thrilling adventures and most engaging characters. Huge numbers of these books were sold, partly because they are gripping and well done. In this book, Tom's souped up zepplin helps him and his friends to escape trumped up, false charges for a bank robbery-- actually committed by others. Tom also meets a sweetie girl-friend when his dirigible temporarily goes out of control and crashes into the roof of her school! The characters are a real treat! Fun, odd, colorful, and wonderfully drawn. Great gift for a young person. I believe this is a handsome facsimile of the 1910 edition.Tom Swift & His Airship OverviewThis anthology is a thorough introduction to classic literature for those who have not yet experienced these literary masterworks. For those who have known and loved these works in the past, this is an invitation to reunite with old friends in a fresh new format. From Shakespeare s finesse to Oscar Wilde s wit, this unique collection brings together works as diverse and influential as The Pilgrim s Progress and Othello. As an anthology that invites readers to immerse themselves in the masterpieces of the literary giants, it is must-have addition to any library.

Bitter Frost and The Wolf Fey (2 Books in 1: Frost Series) ReviewGrowing up, did you ever feel as though you just didn't fit in? That what is considered "the norm" was just out of your reach? Well, this is exactly how Breena has felt her entire life. To top that off, she has always found herself, within her dreams, living in a world among fairies. Always, within those dreams, is a breathtakingly handsome boy named Kian. When not dreaming, Breena uses her amazing talent to bring these dreams to life on canvas, sharing her paintings only with her best friend, Logan.
Life, however, takes a spinning leap out of the ordinary, when on her sixteenth birthday, Breena spots what she feels deeply to be a mean spirited pixie, on the roadside. Seeing his face buries an excruciating unease within Breena's soul. A short time later when Logan comes to Breena's house and she tells him what she has seen, she begins to wonder why Logan never questions her sanity, about such outrageous tales. It does not take long for Breena to find that answer, as well as the answers to so many other questions that have been tugging at her - in addition to raising even more questions.
When Breena is transported to Feyland, she discovers that she is a rare sort of being - part human, part fairy and her life is a much desired one by Feyland royalty. Tapping into unknown and amazing magical talents, Breena must use her wits, intelligence and courage to survive, all while trying to reign in her heart for Kian.
Bitter Frost is an amazing adventure into a world of fantasy and realms that exist only within our imagination (or do they?). This is a story of a young girl who finds herself living within her dreams, turned reality. A new reality that she must survive or face death, for reasons that are beyond her control. Readers that are looking for an escape from the stress and craziness of everyday life, Bitter Frost will indeed be a treat. Whether you are familiar with stories of fantasy or new to this genre, there is something to appeal to every taste within these pages. From adventure, romance, suspense, fairies, pixies and other mythical creatures, Bitter Frost will take you on a journey that you will want to revisit again. With an ending that will leave the reader craving and aching for more, book two in this series cannot be released soon enough. Kailin Gow is a marvelously talented author that will captivate readers spanning a wide age range, from young adults to adults alike. Her writing voice is one that will transport readers into the pages of the story and make them feel as though they are in Feyland, right beside Breena. I greatly enjoyed Bitter Frost and look forward to delving into future works from the delightful Kailin Gow!Bitter Frost and The Wolf Fey (2 Books in 1: Frost Series) Overview

All her life, Breena had always dreamed about fairies as though she lived among them...beautiful fairies living among mortals and living in Feyland. In her dreams, he was always there the breathtakingly handsome but dangerous Winter Prince, Kian, who is her intended. When Breena turns sixteen, she begins seeing fairies and other creatures mortals don t see. Her best friend Logan, suddenly acts very protective. Then she sees Kian, who seems intent on finding her and carrying her off to Feyland. That's fine and all, but for the fact that humans rarely survive a trip to Feyland, a kiss from a fairy generally means death to the human unless that human has fairy blood in them or is very strong, and although Kian seemed to be her intended, he seems to hate her and wants her dead.Suitable for age 13 and up. Contains mild language and kissing. This Bitter Frost Kindle version includes a sneak peek at Kailin Gow's newest book series Beautiful Beings. Also, found within the book itself is a way to enter to win a SIGNED Kindle from the author. Sharp Teeth: A Novel (P.S.) ReviewThis debut novel at first seems strange,
bizarre,
difficult to take the first bite.
But then, the story gets going,
and you forget that it's written in free verse
- except that it doesn't rhyme,
and you know how I am about rhymes.
But still,
What's not to like about a story
About werewolves?
or was it weredogs?
Prowling the streets of LA,
changing at will,
killing and devouring without leaving a trace
- sometimes not even bloody tissue,
licking the ground Ajax clean.
Yet being civilized enough to know
that the most important dog in the pack
is the b!tch
Three packs,
one led by a lawyer at first,
who gets outmaneuvered
in an ironic kind of way
and forced to hide in the guise of woman's best friend
until he can regroup and reclaim,
and remark his territory.
But Lark has a plan
to infiltrate and conquer
It's also about Anthony the dogcatcher.
Who doesn't really want to be like the rest
- of dogcatchers, that is
"Perhaps over time he will become like them
with their permanent stains and bitter dispositions.
But Christ almighty, he thinks,
I hope not"
Anthony feeds the dogs tacos
that he can't afford
and one day he falls in love
Then there's the cop
Peabody
Investigating missing people
and dogs
and bloody trails of big red prints
These dogs don't play poker
preferring the game of bridge
especially Cutter and Blue, who have a knack for the game.
They follow Lark and the Ukan way,
but things get complicated when their fellow bridge players
turn out to be quite different than they seem
and there's also the new pack...
"The new pack follows a different form,
nobody has a name for it,
but it's a rough way of life."
Unusual
Yet compelling
This book reads like a graphic novel
in staccato bursts of
blood, gore, gristle
...and doggie dreams.
Dark, brutal
and memorable
especially on debut.Amanda Richards, April 8, 2008

Shattered (Dream Realms Trilogy, #1) ReviewThis book is *perfect* for the time you just want to get away from it all and be consumed in a magical world and take a romantic adventure. It's light, so don't expect Shakespearean pose or motif-heavy dialogue, and enjoy it for what it's worth: a fun trip into a charming story.
The story stars Laura, a somewhat typical 17 year old girl who's living life day by day, in a small, somewhat mundane town. Nothing exciting ever happens, that is, until a new student comes to school and circumstance dictate that she get to know him! What happens next is the crux of the story, and I won't give it away, but there's a hint of romance, a great deal of danger, exploration into an amazing, magical realm, and more. What's not to like?
Use this book as a 'stop-gap' between some of the heavier reading you do, and you'll greatly enjoy every minute of it!Shattered (Dream Realms Trilogy, #1) OverviewDescription:
