The Midwife's Apprentice ReviewThis slim novel begins with a scrawny young girl sleeping in a dung heap. The heroine, who is nameless as well as homeless, uses the dung for heat, a decision that Jane Sharp, the town's midwife, recognizes as a clever one. Jane hires the girl and names her Beetle, for dung beetle.
Beetle is a smart, compassionate girl, but a timid one, too. She allows Jane Sharp to boss her around and the local boys to tease her mercilessly.
Karen Cushman chose the England of the Middle Ages as a setting for the book, and has researched the subject exhaustively. We learn about village life, medicine, feudal structure, and the place of women in that society. Most enjoyable to follow is Beetle's progress from a scared, meek little girl to a self-assured young woman who has chosen her own name: Alyce.
While not romanticizing Alyce's situation, Cushman makes it clear how much more is available to her than to upper class women of her time. At the end of the book, Alyce chooses her own future from several options. She selects the life that will allow her the most independence. With a name and a career of her own choosing, Alyce has come far indeed from the dung heap. The Midwife's Apprentice Overview

DARK PART OF THE SOUL BOOK 1: DONAL ReviewThrough Donal, Dark Part of the Soul introduces us not only to far off lands of exotic people, but also to the common. We are reminded that no matter the age, location, or situations, human events are the culmination of acts of individual people. While it is true that some gain more notoriety than most, Dark Part of the Soul demonstrates that small seemingly insignificant people and events are what allows a choice few to arise to a position of prominence. Through Donal, we can look at ourselves, how events in our own lives have made us who we are. It begs the question, Can any of us ever be truly content?DARK PART OF THE SOUL BOOK 1: DONAL Overview

Fantasy Hero (Universal Role Playing, Stock No. 502) ReviewThis setting does great honor to Fantasy Hero. Rob Bell is an amazing editor, chopping down text and perfect simplicity. Thank you profusely Mr. Bell.
Fantasy Hero is so concise I learn for my writing every time I read it. The covernsions for other games are amazingly precise and succinct.
One of the best sections of the book is the Sample Character Archetypes. Their backgrounds, though brief, fire the imagination with possibilities. There are a few references I would do away with in this section, but the majority of characters do alot with a little.
I miss Rob Bell from Hero Games. His breviety is a welcome relief from wordiness.

Bitter Frost and The Wolf Fey (2 Books in 1: Frost Series) ReviewGrowing up, did you ever feel as though you just didn't fit in? That what is considered "the norm" was just out of your reach? Well, this is exactly how Breena has felt her entire life. To top that off, she has always found herself, within her dreams, living in a world among fairies. Always, within those dreams, is a breathtakingly handsome boy named Kian. When not dreaming, Breena uses her amazing talent to bring these dreams to life on canvas, sharing her paintings only with her best friend, Logan.
Life, however, takes a spinning leap out of the ordinary, when on her sixteenth birthday, Breena spots what she feels deeply to be a mean spirited pixie, on the roadside. Seeing his face buries an excruciating unease within Breena's soul. A short time later when Logan comes to Breena's house and she tells him what she has seen, she begins to wonder why Logan never questions her sanity, about such outrageous tales. It does not take long for Breena to find that answer, as well as the answers to so many other questions that have been tugging at her - in addition to raising even more questions.
When Breena is transported to Feyland, she discovers that she is a rare sort of being - part human, part fairy and her life is a much desired one by Feyland royalty. Tapping into unknown and amazing magical talents, Breena must use her wits, intelligence and courage to survive, all while trying to reign in her heart for Kian.
Bitter Frost is an amazing adventure into a world of fantasy and realms that exist only within our imagination (or do they?). This is a story of a young girl who finds herself living within her dreams, turned reality. A new reality that she must survive or face death, for reasons that are beyond her control. Readers that are looking for an escape from the stress and craziness of everyday life, Bitter Frost will indeed be a treat. Whether you are familiar with stories of fantasy or new to this genre, there is something to appeal to every taste within these pages. From adventure, romance, suspense, fairies, pixies and other mythical creatures, Bitter Frost will take you on a journey that you will want to revisit again. With an ending that will leave the reader craving and aching for more, book two in this series cannot be released soon enough. Kailin Gow is a marvelously talented author that will captivate readers spanning a wide age range, from young adults to adults alike. Her writing voice is one that will transport readers into the pages of the story and make them feel as though they are in Feyland, right beside Breena. I greatly enjoyed Bitter Frost and look forward to delving into future works from the delightful Kailin Gow!Bitter Frost and The Wolf Fey (2 Books in 1: Frost Series) Overview

All her life, Breena had always dreamed about fairies as though she lived among them...beautiful fairies living among mortals and living in Feyland. In her dreams, he was always there the breathtakingly handsome but dangerous Winter Prince, Kian, who is her intended. When Breena turns sixteen, she begins seeing fairies and other creatures mortals don t see. Her best friend Logan, suddenly acts very protective. Then she sees Kian, who seems intent on finding her and carrying her off to Feyland. That's fine and all, but for the fact that humans rarely survive a trip to Feyland, a kiss from a fairy generally means death to the human unless that human has fairy blood in them or is very strong, and although Kian seemed to be her intended, he seems to hate her and wants her dead.Suitable for age 13 and up. Contains mild language and kissing. This Bitter Frost Kindle version includes a sneak peek at Kailin Gow's newest book series Beautiful Beings. Fly by Night ReviewAs I write this review, it is February 2006. The year, such as it is, is about a sixth over. There is plenty of time for original stories to be published, new works of fiction to pop-up overnight, and fabulous samples of writing to catch the eye. On some level, I know this. I accept it. But then I look down on my review copy of "Fly By Night" and my eyes practically fill with tears. I am looking, you see, at my favorite book of 2006. I already know this. Oh sure, back in January I was sure that my favorite book of 2006 was going to be Karen Cushman's, "The Loud Silence of Francine Green". But while my love for "Francine" is just as clear and concise as ever, Frances Hardinge's whopper of a first novel has truly stolen my heart away. Not since Philip Pullman has a book created such a finely wrought and delicately planned out alternative world. But unlike Pullman (who has his charms BUT) Hardinge's book has a distinct advantage over its competitors. It's brilliant, yes. Well-plotted, well-paced, and well-characterized, yes. But it is also drop dead funny. We're talking about a book in which a girl named after a housefly with a pipe in her teeth goes prancing across the country with her homicidal goose in tow. I haven't a clue if children will actually like this book. Quite frankly, I do not care. I love it as deeply as I have ever loved any title and you can put THAT in your own pipe and smoke it.
Mosca Mye didn't quite intend to burn up her aunt and uncle's mill while escaping from the overly sodden town of Chough. This much we know. She did, however, have every intention of freeing a rapscallion caught in the stocks that very night. The man's name is Eponymous Clent and he's a con man of the most florid degree. Mosca grew up learning how to read from her bookworm father and now, orphaned and trapped in a life she does not like, she sees Clent and his beautiful way with words as a means of getting out of town. They won't be skipping out alone, of course. Clasped firmly under her arm is Mosca's faithful and deadly goose Saracen. On their travels the two run afoul of a ship's captain, rescue a lady from a highwayman, and then dig themselves deeper and deeper into the political intrigue and schemes of the town of Mandelion's rulers, guildsmen, and potential oppressors. Who could know that the very fate of a nation rests on a single eyebrowless girl's slim shoulders and the wingtips of a particularly snarky bird.
What my little description here doesn't do is give you an idea of where this book takes place. Hardinge has created what she calls a Fractured Realm. This world bears some similarities to England at the beginning of the eighteenth century, but with definite differences. In this land, Parliament has dispossessed all royalty and has been trying to figure out which potential ruler should have the crown for several decades now. In their stead, Guilds of skilled working men have grown strong and powerful. The top three, for the purposes of this book, are The Company of Locksmiths (who can enter any domicile with their keys), The Company of Stationers (who have every right to burn and ban the books they deem heresy), and The Company of Watermen (who guard and police the rivers). Got all that? Cause I haven't even gotten into the religious aspects. In this world every day and hour has a different saint or Beloved. People worship different ones. Mosca, in this case, was born under Palpitattle, better known as He Who Keeps Flies out of Jams and Butter Churns. Hence her name. At one point during the height of the political problems a sect known as The Birdcatchers caused unparalleled destruction and chaos all in the name of destroying the religion of The Beloved. They were put down eventually but the country is still reeling from their ascent.
Does this sound like a children's book to you? No? Well bear with me then. There are children out there who read voraciously. For whom a little Tolkein and a little Pullman are nothing but a walk in the park. To these children, I offer up, "Fly By Night". It hasn't any literary equivalent, of course. There's the obvious ode to Dickens here and there (Clent is just a modified dandified Fagan with a pretty tongue) but an even stronger connection to Leon Garfield's old books. If you happen to know anyone who enjoyed "Smith" or "Black Jack" or "The Strange Affair of Adelaide Harris", then this book is an obvious follow-up. If you have never read these books yourself, go and do so immediately and don't come back to me until you've safely devoured them. They are brilliant, but Hardinge is more intelligent and well-written by far. Partly this is due to her language. She writes descriptions that are lovely in their simplicity. Sentences like, "How strange it was to look down the barrel of a pistol! It was not exactly fear, more a soft shock, like being hit in the stomach with a snowball". And best of all you like the characters. You like the villains who become heroes and the heroes who become villains. You revel in never knowing whom to trust, just as Mosca never does. You do know one thing though. Whatever storm happens to blow, you can always trust Mosca and Saracen. There's a wonderful certainty in that.
I will end with a small passage from the book in which Clent starts using his tongue to its truest advantage. It is a description of a man. In it Clent says, "Mabwick Toke is the head of the Stationers' chapter in Mandelion. He can quote the whole of Pessimese's `Endeavors,' from Amblebirth to Aftermath, in the original Acrylic. He can speak twenty languages, half of them living, including two from the Aragash Heights, and one that can only be spoken with a coin under the tongue. When he travels, his carriage is lined with shelves so snug with books that the very breeze must squeeze for entry. He once uncovered a league of subversives by identifying a single silken thread in the paper weave of an opera ticket. If wits were pins, the man would be a veritable hedgehog". If you are a person hoping to write a children's book someday, I strongly urge you NOT to read "Fly By Night". Such passages like the one quoted above can only bring you to tears. This was written as Hardinge's FIRST novel for children. It's enough to make you weep and crow with joy all at once. Let us hope that many many more will be in the works soon.Fly by Night Overview

Tarzan Of The Apes: Tarzan Series, 1 ReviewIt's hard to imagine a time when no one had ever heard of Tarzan, when the ape man hadn't swung his way across countless B movie screens and Disney features. When I saw Edgar Rice Burroughs' 1912 novel Tarzan of the Apes listed among the public domain texts easily downloaded to the Kindle for free, I was curious to see what the original Tarzan looked like, before his cartoonification. It was worth the download.
The outline of the story told in Tarzan of the Apes--the first of what would be 24 Tarzan novels written by Burroughs--will be familiar. It begins with the story of Tarzan's parents, who were generously put ashore by a mutinous crew rather than killed, abandoned on an island that was inhabited only by wild beasts and cannibals. John Clayton is an Englishman's Englisman, brawny and brave and possessed of an innate nobility. His pregnant wife Alice strives to be a suitable companion to such a man. They survive in the jungle for a time, until their son is a year old, and then they both die from separate causes. Tarzan is adopted into a family of apes, where he eventually thrives because he is able to compensate for his physical shortcomings (compared to apes; compared to your average man he is a god) by employing his intellect. Tarzan teaches himself to read from the books he finds among his dead parents' possessions, and so he is able to communicate when the island is finally visited by Europeans, Jane Porter and her bumbling father, who've been marooned themselves. A romance ensues, which leads Tarzan to civilize himself and follow Jane to America.
One can complain that Tarzan is sexist and racist. Jane's black servant Esmeralda is a beloved but comically uneducated appendage to the family, wont to faint at the slightest disturbance, while the cannibals Tarzan runs across are scarcely portrayed as human. Tarzan's mother is all fluttering female, striving to deserve her man. These biases are hardly surprising, however, given the book's age. Like Esmeralda, but without the racist subtext, Jane's father is portrayed comically, as a blithering idiot, in passages which seem ill-fitted to the rest of the rather serious narrative. Burroughs also offers the occasional over-long, poorly written sentence:
"From this primitive function has arisen unquestionably, all the forms and ceremonials of modern church and state, for through all the countless ages, back beyond the uttermost ramparts of a dawning humanity our fierce, hairy forebears danced out the rites of the Dum-Dum to the sound of their earthen drums, beneath the bright light of a tropical moon in the depth of a mighty jungle which stands unchanged today as it stood on that long forgotten night in the dim, unthinkable vistas of the long dead past when our first shaggy ancestor swung from a swaying bough and dropped lightly upon the soft turf of the first meeting place."
Tarzan impresses as a character both because of his physical prowess and his mental acuity. He is portrayed as a noble savage, a blend of human and ape that is superior to both species, both of which come in for criticism. (Though Tarzan is not perfect: we're told, for example, that as a man he will sometimes kill merely for sport.) The book closes with a final act of nobility on Tarzan's part--very nicely done--that underscores his inherent quality.
Many elements of Burroughs' story are of course fantastic, but the author makes much seem credible because of the details he provides--he describes how John Clayton was able to build a sturdy dwelling, for example, from limited supplies; or how Tarzan could teach himself to read; or how he could track someone's progress through the jungle by minute signs which to his practiced eye were like flashing neon. The details bring Tarzan's jungle to life.
Despite the familiarity of Tarzan's story and any shortcomings in the book, Tarzan of the Apes is actually quite a gripping read. I was able to put the book down, to be sure, but there were many times when I was lost in the story while reading, eager to see how things would play out. I can understand how Tarzan came to be such a beloved icon given this introduction.

The Beasts of Tarzan: Tarzan Series, Book 3 ReviewI like tarzan books. This one was great as well. Tarzan finally got to see some of his enemies die, which was satisfying for me. Also, I enjoyed the "lord of nature" aspect of the book. Anyone that can control a pack of apes and a panther is pretty cool. After I read this book, I just wanted to fight another animal to the death. After I killed it, I would stand above it with the blood running down my throat and scream like tarzan does. I recommend this book for any father who is worried his son might grow up to be weak. Once again, great book. The Beasts of Tarzan: Tarzan Series, Book 3 Overview

The Return of Tarzan: Tarzan Series, Book 2 Review"The Return of Tarzan" by Edgar Rice Burroughs is the second volume in the Tarzan series. First published in 1913, this book is a work of genius. There is something about Burroughs' writing that is captivating, and this book is no exception. "The Return of Tarzan" is a highly entertaining volume.
The book first starts with Tarzan on a ship going from New York to France. On this trip, he makes friends with a Countess and makes an enemy with her brother, a Russian. The Russian will attempt to cause Tarzan problems for the following months. After growing tired of France, Tarzan decides to return to Africa. However, his journey is beset with adventures in desert and wilderness.
The story leads to Tarzan finding Opar, the lost outpost of Atlantis, in the heart of Africa. Although both the men and women of Opar are white, the women retained their beauty, while the men are more ape-like in appearance. From here, there are more adventures and peril.
For great adventures, as you may have come to expect from Edgar Rice Burroughs, "The Return of Tarzan" will meet your needs. The Return of Tarzan: Tarzan Series, Book 2 Overview

The Son of Tarzan: Tarzan Series, Book 4 ReviewThis, the third book in the Tarzan series, is one of my favorites. Tricked by one of Tarzan's arch-enemies into running away from home, Tarzan's son Jack finds himself banished to the deep jungle with only Akut, the giant age as a companion. As time goes by, Jack learns to cope with the jungle and transforms into Korak, a jungle lord who converses with apes and rides Tantor the bull elephant. Korak rescues a little Arab girl with a hidden background, and the two young people become fast companions of the wild. The action is constant, the plot convoluted but typical of the Tarzan series with never a dull moment. My only objection is the ending of the book. All is, of course, resolved, but it is so quickly done one cannot help wondering if Burroughs was up against a deadline. Nevertheless, it is quick, good reading! The Son of Tarzan: Tarzan Series, Book 4 Overview

Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar ReviewI was completely sucked into this book from page one. It has been several years since I read the first four books in this series (tracking down this book proved problematic, to say the least).
After finishing this book I came to the conclusion that this is ERB's version of the classic cursed gold stories of the Norse sagas, (Neibelugileid..if I spelled that right, or the Volsung saga. More modern times, Wagner's Ring Cycle, and Lord of the Rings.)
This book takes place of the course of one or two weeks, the time line is very very energy charged. Except for the few days where Tarzan has his amnesia and decides to loll about the jungle, no idea that he needs to save Jane.
Jane is pretty impressive in this book, she doesn't let herself be a complete damsel in distress, she makes several escape attempts and is remarkably tough when it comes to finding out that her husband is dead. (So she and many others think).
Of course she isn't the imperial seductress that La is designed to be. Who is a very interesting character to see in action, she is a spoiled child for the most part, who's only sympathy can be aroused when Tarzan is around.
None of the bad guys in this are cartoonish, they all have sympathetic moments and times when ERB gives us insight into their character.
I really enjoyed this book, I can't reccomend it highly enough and I really wish it was more widely available.Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar Overview

Sword and Sorceress XX ReviewAs usual, MZB and her able staff have collected a wide range of stories. Many old favorites are back, along with some rarely seen writers. I have to say that I was not as happy overall with the quality of the stories as I have been in previous collections. Also, their proofreading/editing department needs to shape up a bit, I have never seen so many errors in one printing. The usual short funny story for the last entry is not present, being replaced by the homily given at MZB's funeral. The good news is that, despite published story to the contrary, this is NOT the last volume planned. I hope that the quality improves for the very last one.Sword and Sorceress XX Overview

The Barn at Gun Lake (Tuitel, Johnnie, The Gun Lake Adventure Series, Bk. 1.) ReviewI am 17 and have cerebral palsy. I've known Johnnie Tuitel for many years, so I was pleased to see his books. I was even more pleased to see how his sense of humor and adventure shines through in his writing. It's very refreshing to find someone who can express the frustrations and triumphs everyone with CP (or any disability, for that matter) runs into, and Johnnie and Sharon do it in such a way that Johnnie Jacobson (the main character) still seems like just one of the gang at Gun Lake. I recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery and adventure, able-bodied and disabled alike. :)The Barn at Gun Lake (Tuitel, Johnnie, The Gun Lake Adventure Series, Bk. 1.) Overview

A Short, Sharp Shock ReviewI read red-green-blue mars and I put it in the category of big fat sci-fi series suitable for very long airplane trips. I love sci-fi but rgb got pretty boring by the time blue was published. I got the distinct impression that Robinson wished he could finish his contract and get on with writing something important. I think that SSS may be that book.
Short, Sharp Shock is a great book but if you didn't like Kafka, you couldn't plough through all of Gulliver's Travels, and you think that Jean Paul Sartre is an idiot then you will probably have difficulty with SSS. One of the other reviews refered to the forced style of the prose -- sometimes it is, just like Swift, Robinson occasionally falls into the trap, for a few pages, of trying to "tell us something". But apart from these occasional pedantic lapses the book is profound.
Robinson successfully explores the temporal nature of personal existance. "It might be that events more than a few months gone would always be nothing more than broken and fleeting images, images like those that fled from the mind each morning upon waking, fragments of dreams too powerful to face. The past was a dream." The past is nothing but a dream state, a memory that becomes less and less relevant to the present. What Robinson's principal character discovers about the intrinsically uncertain future follows from his discovery that he doesn't need his past.
It's an existential, meaningful, very symbolic book. Unless you classify Kafka as scifi then it isn't scifi and it certainly isn't rgb. I loved SSS and plan to read it again soon.A Short, Sharp Shock Overview

Cluny Brown ReviewAges ago, I heard of an English movie, Cluny Brown, with, I think, Jean Simmons and Charles Boyer. (Made during the early '40s?) But when I finally tracked down the novel from which it was taken, all I could think of was the young Audrey Hepburn, the Hepburn of Sabrina. (Not the pallid Jennifer Love Hewitt of the recent tv-bio, but the real Audrey, as we all knew her.) Cluny Brown is a young working class woman in 1938 London who is becoming a trial to her plumber uncle, Arn (he and his late wife raised her when she was orphaned as a baby). Cluny, described as tall and plain, but with creamy skin and beautiful dark eyes, is beginning to attract too much attention from men---to Uncle Arn's surprise and dismay, because he (and the rest of the family) considers her extremely unattractive. She's sent into service, in the Devon countryside, at Carmel Friars, a lovely country manor. There she meets an assortment of characters, including a priggish chemist (drugstore owner) who fancies her, a Polish emigre writer, who doesn't seem to fancy her at all, the son and heir, who's involved with a blonde English beauty, an enthusiastic double-barreled young woman, Miss Duff-Gordon, who raises rabbits, and on and on. Cluny chafes at the lack of freedom and becomes part of everyone's life, popping up at key moments to comment on the action and providing a good deal of it herself. A charming look at England before WWII and at a refreshing character reminiscent of two Hepburn movie heroines, Sabrina as well as Holly Golightly. We all knew that Cluny (real name, Clover) was a diamond-in-the-rough, and was destined to become "someone." Lovely book.Cluny Brown Overview

Sharp North ReviewThis was a fast paced novel that drew me in from the very beginning. I stayed up late waiting to find out what would happen next, and would put off doing work so that I could finish it.
All in all it's a very good read, especially if you enjoy dystopias. The characters were for the most part very well drawn, and you really felt empathy for them. Mira is particularly well developed as a character, especially in the first two thirds of the book. Part of what keeps the book being five stars for me is that I feel like Mira is lost a little towards the end of the book. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, and while their individual personalities show through, I sometimes wished we had more of the story on some of them. Without giving away the plot, I really felt the motives of Pieter and Magnus could have been explained in greater depth, and that Gil and Mira's relationship could have been developed a bit more at the very beginning. These are small quibbles, and really nothing that should keep you from reading the book!
The ending was a huge shock, and I've found myself thinking about it over the past few days. This is not one of those novels that leaves readers with lots of answers and every character's story neatly wrapped up, but rather leaves room for thought about what the meaning in everything is.Sharp North Overview

Destined (Dream Realms Trilogy, #2) ReviewI reviewed the first book, shattered, and even though i really enjoyed the story, i only gave it four stars. i wished that we got to see more of a background about the characters, and a deeper look into the dream world. well, this book definitely delivers! you can see how miss sharp has progressed as a writer since the first book, and we get more interesting, more detailed looks at the characters. plus, there is the introduction of a few new characters who i absolutely LOVED and can't wait to see more of.
my only complaint, really, is that I can't believe this is only a trilogy. i wish it were longer! it'll be very intersting to see how everything wraps up by the third book.
(PS: even if you has reservations about buying this one after reading shattered, i say GO FOR IT! this really is a better book than the first one)Destined (Dream Realms Trilogy, #2) OverviewDescription:Laura has survived the dark caves, and emerged with Logan by her side. But her escape is quickly tainted as she realizes the biggest danger still lies ahead...She has been transformed, and powers she has never known begin to manifest themselves within her body. As she struggles to gain control, how long will she be able to restrain herself - and her new bloodlust - from taking over?As she journeys onward, doubts begin to creep into her mind. Doubts about leaving home, about the decisions she's made. But with the Vassiz still behind her, there is no turning back, now. And she has questions that need to be answered. Just who are the elders, and why have they taken such a keen interest in her? As she starts the unravel the cloak that shrouds their existence, she begins to understand that she may have stumbled into something much larger than herself... and starts to understand her destiny for the first time. Destined is the second book of the Dream Realms Trilogy, and the direct sequel to Shattered. It is approximately 1.7 times longer than the first book.
