Being Indian in Hueyapan: A Revised and Updated Edition ReviewMost North Americans who fly to Cabo San Lucas, the boom town at the tip of Baja California, land at the airport of San Jose del Cabo, a small but comfortably isolated and sanitized access point to their luxury condos and time shares, which now line the beach for a stretch of thirty miles. If you fly from a secondary Mexican city, however, you'll land in a different world, at the municipal airport of Cabo San Lucas itself. You'll have ample opportunity to look down upon the sprawling squatter town - tiny shacks made of scrap metal and thatch, as crowded and squalid as the slums of Mumbai - that surrounds the airport. There are no rental-car agencies at this airport, and if you want a taxi, you'll have to ask the señorita at the currency exchange window to call one for you. This vision of abject poverty has the 'disadvantage' of being accessible; if you really want to see how wretchedly millions of people are living in Mexico, you'll have to work harder and take some risks by visiting the slums of the capital, DF, on the dry bed of lake Texcoco. Believe me, no taxi driver will take you there.
Why are so many people so desperately impoverished and marginalized in Mexico? Tourist, anyone you encounter - the waiter, the hotel maid, even the guy selling throw-rugs on the beach - is 'middle-class' in comparison to the truly miserable that you don't see! Understanding just how desperate people are in Mexico might give you a different feeling about 'illegal' immigration. If your great-great-grandparents in Sicily or Silesia were that desperate, you'd be proud of them for having braved the ocean to get to the USA.
Anthropologist Judith Friedlander went to the village of Hueyapan, in central Mexico, in 1969, to study an "Indian" culture where the Nahuatl language was still in use. What she discovered over the course of a year in residence and several return visits to Hueyapan was that 'being Indian' in Mexico was more a question of economic status than of culture. To simplify her nuanced perceptions, one might say that if you're poor enough, you're 'indio', and if you're rich enough, you're 'blanco.' That's what she expresses in the subtitle of her book: "A Study of Forced Identity in Contemporary Mexico."
Freidlander's insights began to crystalize when she realized exactly how little about "indian" culture was indigenous, and how much of it was the legacy of European conquest, of the forced conversion to Christianity and the education imposed by the Spanish missionaries. Studying clothes, food, and crafts, Friedlander found that the Indians of Hueyapan were at good deal closer in lifestyle to peasants in Spain in the 16th Century than to their genetic Aztec ancestors. Some of her findings are mind-boggling; the 'native' cure for bronchitis, for example, contains six herbs of European origin, butter, and white wine; the only indigenous ingredient is tomatillo, green tomato. And the prayer that accompanies this cure, recited by the local old witchy 'curandera' translates from Nahuatl thus: "Saint Bartholomew of Castile, you who come on a horse, take this shadow from its place."
Frielander arrived in Mexico City expecting, with utter naivete, to share in the movement of revivification of pre-conquest culture that she had been told about. Waht she found, on the ground, profoundly disillusioned her. The movement in DF was not grass-roots or village-based, but rather a projection of students and middle-class urban Mexicans -- mestizos to be sure, but attracted by a romantic image of Mexicanness that made no room for the plodding poor. That disillusionment was only her first; in the long run, she became passionately critical of the role government agencies have continually played in forcing the identity of poverty upon the rural masses, and eventually equally critical of the effect anthropologists - the modern missionaries - have had in the villages they've staked out for their well-funded careers.
This is a very interesting book and, at 188 pages, not a burdensome academic text. No other study of almost-contemporary Mexico has chimed so realistically with my own observations of the country as a student and traveler there. I believe I'll order a new copy through amazon, to be delivered to the Obamas at their Washington address!Being Indian in Hueyapan: A Revised and Updated Edition Overview

Swing Hacks: Tips and Tools for Killer GUIs ReviewI'm surprised that it's taken this many years for a book like this to make it to market. There are good Swing books available, but they rarely go beyond the basics. As soon as I heard about this one, I pre-ordered and began waiting.
It essentially consists of 99 power 'tricks' for creating WOW effects in your user interfaces. Some are eye candy that you'd probably never put in a production application, but I'd say 80%+ could be applied to every day app's. I'll be spending many hours pouring over the details of each hack to gain the deep insight offered by this book.
This book is going to allow me to reach the next level of Swing polish. I find it hard to believe that most people that consider themselves Swing developers wouldn't gain a lot from reading this book. Run, don't walk, and get this book.
There are a few minor disappointments, but I emphasis minor. The production quality seems a bit rushed as there was quite a few obvious errors in the preface alone, although not of a technical nature. Perhaps only the preface escaped any editing oversight, since the remainder of the book had nothing that jumped out at me.
As usual today, the examples are all available for download from OReilly's website. But I wonder why they didn't take the extra step of providing runnable versions of each hack. You have to compile each one - a minor annoyance. When browsing the book it would have been cool to be able to just double-click an associated jar file to see the effect in action.
The author clearly uses a Macintosh, since all (perhaps I missed one or two) the screen shots are from a Mac, and some of the Hacks relate to duplicating Mac OS features. Seeing that the majority of Swing applications are probably deployed on Windows machines, a bit more emphasis on Windows would have been more appropriate. And the screen shots could have used a cross-platform look-and-feel instead of the Mac OS.
In short summary, the good, the bad, and the ugly...
The Good: Insanely great tricks for getting the most out of Swing.
The Bad: Perhaps too much Macintosh focus and not enough Windows (XP).
The Ugly: Probably a bit rushed out the door since there are some glaring production mistakes, like chapter summaries without the chapter names or numbers, etc.Swing Hacks: Tips and Tools for Killer GUIs Overview

Sharpe's Christmas: Two Short Stories (Richard Sharpe's Adventure Series) ReviewAfter reading the whole Sharpe series twice I decided to go ahead and purchase this book. At first I didn;t know what to expect, I figured it would be over just as quick as it started. This is the case, 60 pages takes maybe an hour to read. But the story, like always, grabs you from the start and keeps you reading.
These books are pretty much for Sharpe fans only, little about Sharpe is given away through these books. It is just a quick Sharpe adventure. I particulary liked Ransom.
These two stories are a must for any Sharpe fan out there.

Accelerated C# 2008 ReviewI bought this book last Wednesday and figured it would be a decent enough overview of the new language features. I don't want to downplay the job he does covering new langauge features becuase that coverage is superb, but the job he does covering C# fundamentals is so well done that it eclipses everything else.
So it's a great book for beginners? Well, probably not. I think beginners would benefit by it but it's not a beginners book by any mean. What I do mean is that he does a really in depth job of covering just about every aspect of C# so that he can show the benefits of the new features as well. I've read over 100 books on .NET in the 7 years I've been working with it and frequently the Go to guy when it comes to exception handling for instance. So I really wasn't expecting to learn anything new here. But stylistically, the points he raises in showing how one could elegantly handle a Transaction rollback scenario is just really brilliant. And that same brilliance is exemplified throughout the book.
To that end, the examples in this book are it's real strength. As someone who's written a few books myself, I know how tempting it can be to come up with really simple and overused examples b/c basics aren't much fun to write about. Trey however totally resisted that temptation and I for the life of me can't see a single area that looks like he just 'wanted to get it done'. Everything is seemingly well thought out and written in a way that can clearly make his point clear. He also harkens back to C++ and the fact he has a ton of C++ experience shows through everywhere. It has a feel to it reminiscent of my senior computer science textbooks but without the stuffiness and without coming off as academic. On the contrary, it's the whole aire of advance business scenarios that makes it so cool
Now on to the new language features. I've read several books on LINQ and Lambda expressions. And while they are all great, his explanation of Lambda exprssions and the walk down Functional Programming memory lane is priceless. Had I read this book early on, the nuances of Lambda expressions would have been a lot easier to understand. His coverage of LINQ is in depth as well but he manages to really keep on track and show the business aspects of LINQ without every going down the path of sounding like a 'cool new feature cheerleader'.
I'll admit I have a pretty strong like of Apress books and have a pretty high expectation with their stuff. When I read Faison's Event-Based Programming : Taking Events to the Limit - I found it to be one of the most compelling and well done books I had read in ages. Internally, I thought it would be a longgg time before I came across a book anywhere near that good. Well, all I can really say is that Trey Nash proved me quite wrong. He exceeded any expectation I had by tenfold and got a lot out of this book - not just in C# terms but across the board.Accelerated C# 2008 Overview

JunkBots, Bugbots, and Bots on Wheels: Building Simple Robots With BEAM Technology ReviewThis is, by far, the best robotics how-to book I've ever read. I've been following the BEAM "movement" from its inception, and Dave Hrynkiw's work for years. This book makes the BEAM approach toward robotics accessible to everyone, from the complete newbie to the more experienced hobbyist.
I was amazed at how well the book was written (it's genuinely funny in spots), and how much attention to detail was evident in clear photos and well-done illustrations. This is a model for how such a book should be done.
There are seven projects in the book, from a simple solar-powered top to a rather sophisticated four-legged insect-like walker. Set-by-step instructions are given for each project, along with process photos and circuit diagrams.
One of the coolest things about BEAMbots is that they're often built from analog electronics scavenged from techno-junk (old solar calculators, Walkman, pagers, modems, etc.). Dave provides info on how to round up this junk and where to go for the parts you can't scrounge.
I think that making some of these little autonomous robo-critters and letting them scuttle and flail around in your office (seeking light, avoiding light, dodging obstacles) would be a great way of flexing your superior geek muscles. Make some of these babies and you'll be the envy of propellerheads everywhere!JunkBots, Bugbots, and Bots on Wheels: Building Simple Robots With BEAM Technology OverviewFrom the publishers of BattleBots: The Official Guide comes this do-it-yourself guide to BEAM (Biology, Electronics, Aesthetics, Mechanics) robots. Pro C# 2010 and the .NET 4 Platform ReviewAs a speaker and a User Group leader, I often get asked "Where do I start learning .NET?". My answer is always "Start with the Troelsen book from Apress". This has been true for previous versions of the framework, and after reading the latest edition covering .NET 4, it still holds true.
Andrew takes you on the path that covers what the line of business software developer needs to know about the capabilities of .NET. The book begins with pertinent background information on the evolution of .NET, the Common Type System (CTS), the Common Language Runtime (CLR), and tools like ILDASM and Red-Gate's Reflector. Although not the most exiting reading if you are eager to start writing code, it is important for .NET developers to understand these concepts and tools.
Chapter 2 discusses the various tools (including Notepad++) that can be used to develop in C#. The majority of the readers will be using Visual Studio, but it's good to know (and call out) that you do not have to purchase anything to write C# applications!
Parts 2 and 3 take a deep dive into the C# language itself and along the way explains the pillars of Object Oriented Programming (OOP) and how to implement them in C# and .NET. This is extremely useful to the reader who does not have OOP experience, but is also useful to those coming from another OO language to learn the specifics in C#.
Andrew does a great job explaining the more advanced topics like Generics, Lambdas, Language Integrated Query (LINQ), Multi-Threading, and (recent additions to the framework) the Dynamic Language Runtime and Parallel Programming.
A chapter on Windows Workflow Foundation and Windows Communication Foundation provide a nice intro to those topics, three chapters on ADO.NET (including the new release of the Entity Framework), and whole sections devoted to Windows Presentation Foundation (used for Windows development) and ASP.NET (used web application development) are the core pieces required for standard line of business development.
I have two disappointments with the book, the first is that the ADO.NET chapters include samples for binding data to Windows Forms (WinForms) and not Windows Presentation Foundation. I firmly believe the future of Windows Client development is WPF (not WinForms), and Andrew echoes this by focusing on WPF in the rest of the text. In fact, WinForms is relegated to an Appendix.
My other disappointment is that the new ASP.NET MVC framework isn't discussed as an alternative to ASP.NET WebForms. There are plenty of books out there on MVC, but what I have really liked about these books is that they have presented all of the relevant options and left it up to the reader to decide which direction.
In summary, this book is massive (weighing in at over 1500 pages), and is still the single place to start learning .NET and C#. I have always used his books on the language to learn all the options available as a developer (and get a decent understanding of those topics), then picked up books that do a deep dive into the specifics (like Matthew McDonald's Pro WPF in C# 2010: Windows Presentation Foundation in .NET 4).Pro C# 2010 and the .NET 4 Platform Overview

C# Precisely ReviewInstant classic!
This is THE best computer language book I have ever seen in my life!
This book's achievement is unprecedented. Anders Hejlsberg used 432 pages to describe C#, Jesse Liberty spent 672 pages to achieve the same with better accessibility. Make a guess, what are the minimum pages to achieve the same goal? 182 pages!!! 182 pages achieved even higher level of accomplishment than 400-700 pages!
You can't find any useless or meaningless word in this book. If a word is taken from the book, it's not complete. If a word is added, it's too much.
I read the book as if I were reading a collection of beautiful poems, I almost forgot it's a computer book. The language is so fluid that you only feel perfection and harmony, the descriptions are so accurate that it reaches the level of precision as mathematics.
After I finished reading, I noticed that the author lives in Copenhagen, Denmark. I am really astonished by his mastery of English the same as his mastery of C#.
Another excellence of this book I'd like to mention is that:
When the book is opened, the left hand pages give you high precision descriptions of C# constructs and logic, the examples are given on the right hand pages to support and clarify these concepts.
Highly recommended, software engineers and computer scientists will be benefited from this book on multiple aspects.

Fantasy Hero (Universal Role Playing, Stock No. 502) ReviewThis setting does great honor to Fantasy Hero. Rob Bell is an amazing editor, chopping down text and perfect simplicity. Thank you profusely Mr. Bell.
Fantasy Hero is so concise I learn for my writing every time I read it. The covernsions for other games are amazingly precise and succinct.
One of the best sections of the book is the Sample Character Archetypes. Their backgrounds, though brief, fire the imagination with possibilities. There are a few references I would do away with in this section, but the majority of characters do alot with a little.
I miss Rob Bell from Hero Games. His breviety is a welcome relief from wordiness.

The Return of Tarzan: Tarzan Series, Book 2 Review"The Return of Tarzan" by Edgar Rice Burroughs is the second volume in the Tarzan series. First published in 1913, this book is a work of genius. There is something about Burroughs' writing that is captivating, and this book is no exception. "The Return of Tarzan" is a highly entertaining volume.
The book first starts with Tarzan on a ship going from New York to France. On this trip, he makes friends with a Countess and makes an enemy with her brother, a Russian. The Russian will attempt to cause Tarzan problems for the following months. After growing tired of France, Tarzan decides to return to Africa. However, his journey is beset with adventures in desert and wilderness.
The story leads to Tarzan finding Opar, the lost outpost of Atlantis, in the heart of Africa. Although both the men and women of Opar are white, the women retained their beauty, while the men are more ape-like in appearance. From here, there are more adventures and peril.
For great adventures, as you may have come to expect from Edgar Rice Burroughs, "The Return of Tarzan" will meet your needs. The Return of Tarzan: Tarzan Series, Book 2 Overview

The Son of Tarzan: Tarzan Series, Book 4 ReviewThis, the third book in the Tarzan series, is one of my favorites. Tricked by one of Tarzan's arch-enemies into running away from home, Tarzan's son Jack finds himself banished to the deep jungle with only Akut, the giant age as a companion. As time goes by, Jack learns to cope with the jungle and transforms into Korak, a jungle lord who converses with apes and rides Tantor the bull elephant. Korak rescues a little Arab girl with a hidden background, and the two young people become fast companions of the wild. The action is constant, the plot convoluted but typical of the Tarzan series with never a dull moment. My only objection is the ending of the book. All is, of course, resolved, but it is so quickly done one cannot help wondering if Burroughs was up against a deadline. Nevertheless, it is quick, good reading! The Son of Tarzan: Tarzan Series, Book 4 Overview

Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar ReviewI was completely sucked into this book from page one. It has been several years since I read the first four books in this series (tracking down this book proved problematic, to say the least).
After finishing this book I came to the conclusion that this is ERB's version of the classic cursed gold stories of the Norse sagas, (Neibelugileid..if I spelled that right, or the Volsung saga. More modern times, Wagner's Ring Cycle, and Lord of the Rings.)
This book takes place of the course of one or two weeks, the time line is very very energy charged. Except for the few days where Tarzan has his amnesia and decides to loll about the jungle, no idea that he needs to save Jane.
Jane is pretty impressive in this book, she doesn't let herself be a complete damsel in distress, she makes several escape attempts and is remarkably tough when it comes to finding out that her husband is dead. (So she and many others think).
Of course she isn't the imperial seductress that La is designed to be. Who is a very interesting character to see in action, she is a spoiled child for the most part, who's only sympathy can be aroused when Tarzan is around.
None of the bad guys in this are cartoonish, they all have sympathetic moments and times when ERB gives us insight into their character.
I really enjoyed this book, I can't reccomend it highly enough and I really wish it was more widely available.Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar Overview

Jamsa's C/C++/C# Programmer's Bible ReviewI bought this book after doing some research for a good C++ book. I had decided on a completely different title when I discovered this one on the shelf and I bought it instead.
This book is not "light reading" by any stretch of the imagination. It is instead almost 1200 pages of fact after fact about C, C++ and C#. It is divided up into sections and subsections, covering first the C language, then moving on to C++, and finally introducing C#. Under each language the author has gone into very deep details about even some of the most obsure topics, making everything very accessible with example code and detailed explanations about the topics he is addressing. The reader will be hard-pressed to come away with a lack of understanding.
The coverage of standard language constructs is very deep. The C++ coverage includes a lengthy section for STL topics, writing your own templates. These are hot topics and the coverage will not disappoint.
Where this book really shines is, as stated above, its depth in coverage. While not exhaustive, it covers some topics in so much detail that a reader will have no doubts regarding the functionality available.
Some of the material is very dated. For example, there is a hefty section about memory model programming, dating back to the 16-bit OS days. For a huge majority of us, this information is historical in value. Anyone still working in the 16-bit world will benefit more. Another section that shows its age involves direct screen writes, again going back to the days prior to 32-bit Windows.
This book has one flaw, in my opinion, and it's that it's geared towards Windows developers. I suppose the C# aspect is indicative of that for now, but other more fundamental operations, such as spawning child processes, are discussed in a very Windows-centric way. I think the book would have been perfect if there was some contrasting information for the way UNIX and Mac handle this kind of operation.
For the Windows developer, there are several sections adding up to over 250 pages that discuss Windows application development. AFTER that, it plunges into .NET topics, giving an excellent primer.
Although this book is geared towards Windows developers, much of it can be applied to other platforms. It is an outstanding book for its coverage of the languages it targets and should be considered when searching for a book on C or C++.Jamsa's C/C++/C# Programmer's Bible Overview

US Infantryman in World War II (1): Pacific Area of Operations 1941-45 ReviewI'm a big fan of both Osprey and Robert Rush, who are an outstanding publisher and historian respectively. The approach of this books is innovative and interesting. We follow a fictional soldier, Michael, from his enlistment in a New York National Guard regiment in 1938 through his discharge from military service in 1945. Along the way, we learn about his clothing, equipment, tactics and training. The writing is excellent.
Unfortunately, the execution is not up to Osprey's usual high standard. There are too many typographical errors, the maps are mediocre and difficult to correlate with the text, and the color plates are also mediocre.US Infantryman in World War II (1): Pacific Area of Operations 1941-45 Overview

Applied .NET: Developing People-Oriented Software Using C# ReviewIf you have kept up with the .NET revolution, you have no doubt seen and read a lot of books on .NET and the .NET languages. Most of the books on C# deal with the basics of syntax with a couple of small samples applications. Very few, however, deal with any sort of real world situations.
While this book does cover a few of the basics, it is more focused on the people aspect. I feel this is an important, often overlooked, aspect of software development and the fact that it is overlooked is why so much software is hard to use.
If you are looking for a best practices book, this tome is not quite there. The same goes for a book strong on code. While you can use the CD to look at a good amount of sample code, the book is rather thin. This is not, however, the focus of the book; and, since so many other books cover this, the niche filled here is rather nice.
If I had to pick the proper audience for this book, there would be two categories: 1) Anyone who has ever had a piece of software fail as the end-users never bought in, and 2) anyone who wants to ensure this never happens. While it is not an excellent book, I have to laud the publisher for taking a chance on this subject matter selling. I hope it does.Applied .NET: Developing People-Oriented Software Using C# Overview

The Sharp Knife of Forced Simplicity: Volume 1 - The Numinous Rebellion ReviewIs it in poor taste to review my own book? I'll leave the answer to those who "find the review helpful" or not.
My honest opinion is simply this: I really like this book. There are parts where I read a page and say to myself "That's brilliant!" There are times and places where I don't. It's not a perfect book, but it is a fun read.
This book took me two years to write, but you should understand that this final product came out in a single month. This month was very near the end of the Bush-era, when politicians were at each other's throats for the soon-empty seat. It is something of a time capsule, then, for all the rage and bitter views of the Bush-run government seem a bit harsh these days. However, I believe the points are still valid, and the underlying idea of change is something of a motto in society today.
I wrote every word in this book in a very serious manner, and I mean every word of it. However, when I heard back from the publishers they told me they couldn't stop laughing! So I believe I struck the right balance between the ideas and the enjoyment.
In the end, I believe it is worth the money, and I humbly offer this piece of "Entertainment Philosophy" to you.
Love,
Ron
P.S. It makes a great bathroom book! The Sharp Knife of Forced Simplicity: Volume 1 - The Numinous Rebellion Overview

The Barn at Gun Lake (Tuitel, Johnnie, The Gun Lake Adventure Series, Bk. 1.) ReviewI am 17 and have cerebral palsy. I've known Johnnie Tuitel for many years, so I was pleased to see his books. I was even more pleased to see how his sense of humor and adventure shines through in his writing. It's very refreshing to find someone who can express the frustrations and triumphs everyone with CP (or any disability, for that matter) runs into, and Johnnie and Sharon do it in such a way that Johnnie Jacobson (the main character) still seems like just one of the gang at Gun Lake. I recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery and adventure, able-bodied and disabled alike. :)The Barn at Gun Lake (Tuitel, Johnnie, The Gun Lake Adventure Series, Bk. 1.) Overview

Mastering Visual C# .NET ReviewI read through this book at the local bookstore and then bought it online. I agree with the other reviewers: this book is simply the best one around.
There are so many books on C# now, but a few really shine as being great. This book is one of them.
I liked this book because it can be used as both a user guide to learn C# _and_ as a reference book to C# and .NET. No other book even comes close to that goal, and the authors have done a really great job.
Another great thing about this book is that it can be used by beginners and advanced users, so if you don't know C# you can learn everything you need from this book. Even if you don't know programming, this book is written in a style that you can understand - all without talking down to the reader.
There are also topics covered in this book not covered in any other book - such as security and other advanced topics.Mastering Visual C# .NET Overview

The Princess of the Fillmore Street School (Olivia Sharp: Agent for Secrets) ReviewI was in a book store looking for books that would be interesting and appropriate for my 6 year old daughter when I stumbled upon Olivia Sharp. I flipped through the pages and when I brought it home, my daughter loved it.
Olivia Sharp is a detective, and in the "Princess of the Fillmore Street School" she must deal with how to appropriately approach a girl who wants everyone to be perfect. While the story does teach some valuable lessons, they are not preached as to drown out the story. The story is interesting, and with the topic of "princesses" is sure to capture the attention and imagination of young female readers.
The story is an entertaining read, with 14 short chapters covering 73 pages. Some pages have a lot of words, some less, and there are generally pictures on each page. Olivia has to solve difficult people problems that stem from her cases. In the book, the focus is more on helping people. There is nothing obnoxious or crude. Just a quality, down to earth good story.
This book is perfect for a young reader who is venturing away from children's books. There are some challenging words, which is good. My daughter often comes up to me and asks me to tell her what a word is.
We will be getting more from the Olivia Sharp series! The Princess of the Fillmore Street School (Olivia Sharp: Agent for Secrets) Overview
