Plum Lucky - A Stephanie Plum Between-the-numbers Novel ReviewStatisically speaking, luck has a normal distribution, that is, it has a bell shaped curve. Most people are in the middle with an average amount of luck, but some people are at an extreme point on the curve and are unlucky all the time (like that character in Lil Abner who walked around with a black cloud over his head), and some are at the other end and are lucky all the time. So goes life.
It's St. Patrick's Day and there is a rainbow in the air. Grandma Mazur stumbles into a duffle bag full of money - lots of money. She thinks that it is lucky money and hers to keep. Let the good times roll. She is off to Atlantic City. But other people have claims on the money. The story has an interesting cast of characters including an ex-jockey who thinks that he is an invisible leprechaun (he is always lucky, but manages to fumble it away); of course there are Stephi, Lula, and Connie from the bailbonds office; Diesel appears from Stephi's past - another man in her life; a short guy hired by Grandma Mazur; the gangster Delvina; and a horse to add to the adventures and misadventures. Of course there is the money.
You will have to read the novel to see how it all shakes out. The novel is not great literature, but is extremely funny. ROFL. Some scenes towards the end had me laughing so hard I had trouble continuing.
It is a short novel, and a quick read, at 166 pages with 28 lines per page somewhat widely spaced in easy reading type. It contains what a friend would call earthy language. I would personally classify it as PG-13.Plum Lucky - A Stephanie Plum Between-the-numbers Novel Overview

The Ring Bear ReviewSelecting gifts for the bridal party was one of the more challenging aspects of planning our wedding. Our nephews are big into books so this was a great gift. I also wrote a personal message on the inside flap so it is now a keepsake. The story is very cute as the child thinks he is going to be a ring bear not a ring bearer. Straight For the Heart ReviewThis is the first book of her's that I have read and I was so enthralled I couldn't put it down, literally. I haven't read a story that held my interest so much that I couldn't stop to cook supper till I finished it. As it builds near the end she made me feel as though I was a part of the story and one of the characters. She is a spellbinding author and I can hardly wait to read the trilogy I bought. Purple Is Part of a Rainbow (Rookie Reader Repetitive Text) Review"Purple Is Part of a Rainbow" is a good book for children with developing vocabularies. In this book, the simple rhymes of Carolyn Kowalczyk are well complemented by the lovely artwork of Gene Sharp.
The rhymes follow a standard format: "A petal is part of a flower. / A rainbow is part of a shower. / A feather is part of a bird. / A letter is part of a word." Each sentence is accompanied by an illustration. The colorful illustrations have a soft, gentle quality to them. Another nice touch is the fact that the artwork depicts people of various racial/ethnic characteristics.
The educational value of the book is enhanced by a word list at the end. Overall, a well done collaboration, with a wonderfully poetic title.Purple Is Part of a Rainbow (Rookie Reader Repetitive Text) Overview

The Sharp Knife of Forced Simplicity: Volume 1 - The Numinous Rebellion ReviewIs it in poor taste to review my own book? I'll leave the answer to those who "find the review helpful" or not.
My honest opinion is simply this: I really like this book. There are parts where I read a page and say to myself "That's brilliant!" There are times and places where I don't. It's not a perfect book, but it is a fun read.
This book took me two years to write, but you should understand that this final product came out in a single month. This month was very near the end of the Bush-era, when politicians were at each other's throats for the soon-empty seat. It is something of a time capsule, then, for all the rage and bitter views of the Bush-run government seem a bit harsh these days. However, I believe the points are still valid, and the underlying idea of change is something of a motto in society today.
I wrote every word in this book in a very serious manner, and I mean every word of it. However, when I heard back from the publishers they told me they couldn't stop laughing! So I believe I struck the right balance between the ideas and the enjoyment.
In the end, I believe it is worth the money, and I humbly offer this piece of "Entertainment Philosophy" to you.

Plays and Playwrights 2009 ReviewI laughed, I cried, I couldn't stop reading. What a collection! I especially loved "Sister Cities" by Colette Freedman. I could totally relate to her telling of one family, with so many ladies- all from the same mother, yet going in so many different directions. And what brings them back together, is definitely worth the read!

CultureShock Australia: A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette ReviewCulture Shock! Austtralia an interesting read, a good addition for anyone planning to travel to OZ. The book appears to be written for prospective Asian immigrants, through the eyes of a English born author Ilsa Sharp. I found the first chapters rather negative, pointing out some unfavouable opinions and facts, and I wondered why Ms Sharp wanted to immigrate to this country. Generally a humorous and in the most part a fair assessment of OZ. But, may I indicate some misconceptions and omissions. Everyone knows that the European settlement started from a convict origins, but the vast number of the new comers were immigrants. OZ is not ashamed of its beginnings, and tracing your family has become an ever growing past time for many families - yes the common folk. Alas, I found none of my family in the prison system and lament this lack. It is of special interest and prized to have a nefarious relative and is not an insult to point this out (as many have tried), but rather reflects the ignorance of the person attempting to be insulting. In the past decade, our history is becoming ever present in our daily life, both the good and the bad bits. The book ties to say that no Asian had lived in OZ till recently, it is a pity they missed out of the Chinese folk who came here around the Gold Rush days - yes almost as long as the Europeans. A town called Broome in Western Australia has had close connections to the Malays and Indonesians prior to the First Fleet. Ms Sharp missed the contibution of the ANZACs in World War One - the Western Front - France and Belgium- they died in their thousands, along side those of other Commonwealth nations and US troops. It is said at least one out of every family were killed in this war. They were called 'diggers' as they dug the trenches, where they died. Lest we forget. The thoughts of independence started from here, to stand on our own two feet as a nation in her own right. I was further surprised that under 'survival sense' that heat stroke/exhaustion and sun burn were not mentioned - a real danger, as a German couple found out recently. Respect for mother nature. A surprising misconception is the lack of formality in business. Ms Sharp has sited several situations, number 3, really bothered me. The option that is correct is A, we are a parochial people and hold store in good manners, we don't always thumb our noses at every situation. If a worker did choose option B they would be out of a job or out of business. I did not find the conclusions expressed to be funny - I found it insulting. I did not look at all closely at some sections, politics and economics { as they change everyother day) and anything printed can only be historical in context. Mama Does Time (A Mace Bauer Mystery) ReviewI read a lot of mysteries. I started out with the "English Cottage" mysteries, so it's no surprise that I prefer mysteries that have a good sense of place, time and character. I also like mysteries that are part of a series. It's difficulty to find a good mystery, so when I do, I want there to be more.
I've also read a fair number of first-time authors, probably because I harbor a secret dream of being one myself. I'm pretty critical of first-timers. But I have to say that I really liked Deborah Sharp's MAMA DOES TIME. It has a comfortable voice. She doesn't try too hard to be funny--interecting humor in a way that doesn't call attention to itself. And Sharp has a delightful sense of time, place and familial relationships.
It meets all of my criteria. It's a great read--and there are more to come! How cool is that?Mama Does Time (A Mace Bauer Mystery) Overview
Meet Mama: a true Southern woman with impeccable manners, sherbet-colored pantsuits, and four prior husbands, able to serve sweet tea and sidestep alligator attacks with equal aplomb. Mama's antics — especially her penchant for finding trouble — drive her daughters Mace, Maddie, and Marty to distraction.
One night, while settling in to look for ex-beaus on COPS, Mace gets a frantic call from her mother. This time, the trouble is real: Mama found a body in the trunk of her turquoise convertible and the police think she's the killer. It doesn't help that the handsome detective assigned to the case seems determined to prove Mama's guilt or that the cowboy who broke Mace's heart shows up at the local Booze 'n' Breeze in the midst of the investigation. Before their mama lands in prison — just like an embarrassing lyric from a country-western song — Mace and her sisters must find the real culprit.
