Murder and Madness: The Myth of the Kentucky Tragedy (Topics in Kentucky History) ReviewThe "Kentucky Tragedy" --the 1825 alleged "honor killing" of Kentucky Attorney General Solomon P. Sharp by Jereboam O. Beauchamp for the debauching of Beauchamp's wife, the former Anna Cooke, before their marriage, coupled with the subsequent suicide of Anna and judicial hanging of Jereboam, has long been a burr under the saddle of Kentucky and Southern historians. Most writers of both fiction and nonfiction who have attempted to relate and interpret the tale have concluded that the whole sordid affair is explainable and understandable under the horrible old Code of Southern Honor or "Fool's Code," as it was some time later nicknamed. In this book, Matthew Schoenbachler has done Kentucky history a great service by exploding the "honor" myth, not only by the exhaustive use of reference material contemporary to the murder and hanging, but with the keen application of interpretive principles. Herein he argues that Jereboam and Anna more or less let themselves be drawn into an imaginary world created by their respective literary influences, on Anna's part the writings of Mary Wollestonecraft and the English "seduction novels" of the late eighteenth century, and for Jereboam the anti-heroic protagonists of so many of Lord Byron's poems. Sharp's murder by Beauchamp was not so much the result of a desire for revenge on the part of Anna Beauchamp for the stillborn illegitimate child she had "laid to" the attorney as it was enraged retribution for the suggestion, most likely made by one of Sharp's political supporters, that Anna's child was bi-racial. And in the end, Beauchamp's written "Confession" was nowhere so near an honest and forthright account of events as it was a romantic literary creation of both Jereboam and Anna, based on a bizarre combination of Lord Byron and seduction novels and originally intended (or at least hoped by the couple, if only they could find a publisher in time) to provide a groundswell of popular support for an executive pardon for the condemned man. Modern readers cannot help thinking of the manipulation of truth regularly practiced in reality television shows even though the Beauchamps' escapades antedated television by a hundred and twenty years or so, and perhaps the greatest tragedy of all is humankind's tendency (seemingly throughout history) to try to manipulate truth in this fashion.Murder and Madness: The Myth of the Kentucky Tragedy (Topics in Kentucky History) OverviewThe "Kentucky Tragedy" was early America's best known true crime story. In 1825, Jereboam O. Beauchamp assassinated Kentucky attorney general Solomon P. Sharp. The murder, trial, conviction, and execution of the killer, as well as the suicide of his wife, Anna Cooke Beauchamp -- fascinated Americans. The episode became the basis of dozens of novels and plays composed by some of the country's most esteemed literary talents, among them Edgar Allan Poe and William Gilmore Simms. In Murder and Madness, Matthew G. Schoenbachler peels away two centuries of myth to provide a more accurate account of the murder. Schoenbachler also reveals how Jereboam and Anna Beauchamp shaped the meaning and memory of the event by manipulating romantic ideals at the heart of early American society. Concocting a story in which Solomon Sharp had seduced and abandoned Anna, the couple transformed a sordid murder -- committed because the Beauchamps believed Sharp to be spreading a rumor that Anna had had an affair with a family slave -- into a maudlin tale of feminine virtue assailed, honor asserted, and a young rebel's revenge. Murder and Madness reveals the true story behind the murder and demonstrates enduring influence of Romanticism in early America.

Sharpshooter: A Sunny McCoskey Napa Valley Mystery (Napa Valley Mysteries) ReviewI really enjoyed reading this book and I don't normally read fiction. (As my previous reviews indicate.) I had just finished reading a beautiful big coffee table book - "Napa Stories: Profiles, Reflections, and Recipes from the Napa Valley" by Michael Chiarello. I was certainly in the mood.
Author Nadia Gordon did her homework about the Napa Valley. As a biologist I wasn't sure the glassy-winged sharpshooter was an actual insect. Well, it certainly is. She creates a very real "sense of place" about this world famous valley. She weaves in a lot about wine making, believable local politics, society and personal relationships.
I guess I am being a little bit picky, but I wish the book were a little bit longer to flesh out some of the characters more. However, this is the first of a series, so I guess it is a complement that I would like to know the characters better. The only other comment would be one of the main characters is named Rivka. It is a little bit difficult to mentally pronounce.
I must admit it was a great read and I look forward to the rest of the series.Sharpshooter: A Sunny McCoskey Napa Valley Mystery (Napa Valley Mysteries) Overview

Plum Lucky - A Stephanie Plum Between-the-numbers Novel ReviewStatisically speaking, luck has a normal distribution, that is, it has a bell shaped curve. Most people are in the middle with an average amount of luck, but some people are at an extreme point on the curve and are unlucky all the time (like that character in Lil Abner who walked around with a black cloud over his head), and some are at the other end and are lucky all the time. So goes life.
It's St. Patrick's Day and there is a rainbow in the air. Grandma Mazur stumbles into a duffle bag full of money - lots of money. She thinks that it is lucky money and hers to keep. Let the good times roll. She is off to Atlantic City. But other people have claims on the money. The story has an interesting cast of characters including an ex-jockey who thinks that he is an invisible leprechaun (he is always lucky, but manages to fumble it away); of course there are Stephi, Lula, and Connie from the bailbonds office; Diesel appears from Stephi's past - another man in her life; a short guy hired by Grandma Mazur; the gangster Delvina; and a horse to add to the adventures and misadventures. Of course there is the money.
You will have to read the novel to see how it all shakes out. The novel is not great literature, but is extremely funny. ROFL. Some scenes towards the end had me laughing so hard I had trouble continuing.
It is a short novel, and a quick read, at 166 pages with 28 lines per page somewhat widely spaced in easy reading type. It contains what a friend would call earthy language. I would personally classify it as PG-13.Plum Lucky - A Stephanie Plum Between-the-numbers Novel Overview

Road Kill ReviewThis book has plenty of suspense and action. If you like motorcycles, it will be an extra treat for you. Charlie Fox is ex-British Special Forces turned body guard. She smart and tough. She also struggles with issues from her past, her family, her friends, and her ex-boyfriend.
The story picks up after Charlie's first bodyguard job in the States. There's lots of clever action and not a lot of gun play.
In this 5th book of the series, the references to Charlie's dark side and especially those of her boyfriend get a little repetitive. But, the rest of the book makes up for it.
The first few books of the series were somewhat hard to acquire. I ordered a couple of the books from a bookseller that specializes in out of print books. Here are the books: Killer Instinct, Riot Act, Hard Knocks, First Drop, Road Kill, Second Shot. Riot Act is my favorite.Road Kill Overview

Dirty Business (The Leah Ryan Mysteries) ReviewI read this book in a day. It is very fast paced and hard to put down. I was not sure where this book was going to go at any minute. I really loved this book. It touches on adoption, foster care, kidnappings, murders, juvenile hall, families, death, and lasting friendships. The author was able to tie everything together, I was only dissapointed that the book ended.Dirty Business (The Leah Ryan Mysteries) OverviewPregnant women are disappearing in the capital region. The mother of Alexia Clemmons, one of the missing women, hires private investigator Leah Ryan and partner Jackson Quick to find her daughter. The list of suspects include Alexia's philandering husband, who hardly seems broken up about his pregnant wife's disappearance, a cult leader who purposely impregnates his female followers whose babies suddenly vanish, and a shady network of adoption agencies whose involvement in a black market baby scheme has ruined many lives. Taking this case leads Jack and Leah into a labyrinth of mystery and murder.Complicating matters is Leah's intense sexual attraction to Lucas Novak, the married expert in violence and threat assessment whose expertise they've enlisted. Turning to Lucas in search of oblivion leads to a series of risky, addictive encounters between them, endangering Leah emotionally and physically as her focus on the case wavers

Third Strike: A Thriller (Charlie Fox Thriller) ReviewLoved it!! Have got all of Zoe Sharp's Charlie Fox books. Think it was Road Kill that wasn't my personal favorite but it has been a couple of years since I read it. This one Zoe Sharp has got Charlie back on target. This was actually one of those books that had me hooked from page one. Sat down and started it on a Saturday afternoon and had to make myself put it down to go to bed and got up Sunday morning and finished it. Been a long time since I have found a book that made everything else wait until I finished it. I read the Charlie Fox books in order which maybe that is why I liked this one so much, liked the whole more personal aspect with Charlie and her parents and with Sean. Cannot wait for the next one to see what happens with her and Sean.Third Strike: A Thriller (Charlie Fox Thriller) Overview

Finding Chloe (The Leah Ryan Mysteries) ReviewLeah Ryan is back in book 2 of the Leah Ryan Mysteries series. She is approached by a young man who says he is searching for his girlfriend, Chloe - Chloe was a stripper and has disappeared and he says the cops aren't looking for her very hard as a result. He is afraid she might be dead, or worse. Leah, of course, can't resist a challenge, so sets out to start investigating, although the thought that she is going into danger again causes Callahan to break things off with her. She turns to her old friend Jack, who helps in her investigations. However, almost right away, the threats start. Someone doesn't want Chloe found, and they're willing to kill to keep their secrets.
This book has even faster action and more adrenaline than the first book; I didn't think it was possible. Leah keeps moving forward at lightning speed, despite everything that is thrown at her to try to stop her. I didn't notice any plot holes in this book, but there were a few more typos and missing words. It was still remarkably clean compared to a lot of other books out on the market today. Tracy Sharp has created some really compelling characters and I'm enjoying these books immensely. Book 3, "Dirty Business," is next on my list to read. Highly recommended!Finding Chloe (The Leah Ryan Mysteries) OverviewAn exotic dancer vanishes from the underbelly of the city. Repo agent and reformed car thief Leah Ryan has a knack for rescue, and she's a sucker for a lost cause. Unable to turn away from helping find a stripper whose disappearance many are indifferent to, Leah soon discovers that there are those who would keep Chloe Nolan from being found, and that there is far more to her disappearance than meets the eye.Leah and her friend Jackson Quick soon find themselves in a deadly game of obsession and corruption, where the line between innocence and guilt is blurred, and where nothing is as it seems. Added to the chaos is a hot ex-boyfriend and a steamy reporter, neither of whom Leah can't seem to get enough of.

Repo Chick Blues (The Leah Ryan Mysteries) ReviewI found the book to be a very well written Mystery with excellect character and plot development. Leah Ryan is a smart sassy young woman with a social conscience. She finds her self in difficult situations and always thinks her way through them. There is also a lovely touch of spice that keeps you looking for more of Leah, her life and her adventures. I also love the fact that is is one of a series. Tracy Sharp has done a terrific job portraying the thoughts, adventure and life of a young single woman with a little attitude.. This is definately 2 thumbs up, hard to put down read!!!Repo Chick Blues (The Leah Ryan Mysteries) OverviewReformed car thief Leah Ryan is trouble. SHANGHAIED (The Ray Sharp Novels) ReviewThe tag line is taking from a blog that the Author participated in. While I am not privy to sales figures, in my old neighborhood we would likely state that Eric Stone has "got a set of plums" re: killing off the proverbial "golden goose." With libraries starting to carry the hard cover versions of his latest, it does seem like a risky maneuver. First and foremost, Mr. Stone is very assessable to fans of his work and has obviously put in "the time" via research and/or real life experience on his previous 3-novels. Even before the central character was rather unceremoniously cast aside, I was beginning to have some issues with "Shanghaied."
1.) The story line of the Accountant/Monk going AWOL in HK and experiencing "pleasures of the flesh" was an interesting premise. However, there wasn't enough time to develop the angle and put any type of "face" on the character before he was killed off
2.) The disabled American factory owner/manager with a set of smoking hot female triad kung-fu expert bodyguards is very "James Bond-ish"
3.) The lack of explanation re: the side kick was simple not killed in lieu of being held and addicted to heroin
4.) The blossoming lesbian relationship that didn't seem to add anything to main plot
Essentially, it is like reading 2-books under one cover with neither having reached a conclusion. It took me much longer to finish "Shanghaied" versus the Author's other 3-novels, which very hard to put down.
Here is hoping for a "soap opera" like re-emergence of Ray Sharp!

Killer Instinct (Charlie Fox Series) ReviewIf you like US female PIs (VI Warshawski, Kinsey Millhone) then you'll like Charlie Fox.
Charlie is tough. She teaches women's self-defence (which she took up after being raped in the army), rides a motorbike and is very independent.
The book starts with Charlie's friend Clare being attacked during karaoke night at a local nightclub by reigning champion Susie Hollins. Charlie deals with the attack and is offered a job as a bouncer by the clubs owner. Hours later Susie Hollins is found dead - the latest victim of a homicidal rapist that has been terrorising the local community. Charlie suspects a link between the nightclub and the homicidal rapist and she begins to investigate.
The book moves along at a cracking pace and Charlie is a believable tough heroine. The identity of the killer may be obvious in a plot that has been used many times before, but Charlie is interesting enough to carry you through.Killer Instinct (Charlie Fox Series) Overview

Sharp Objects: A Novel ReviewSummary, no spoilers.
This is the story of Camille Preaker, who works as a reporter for a newspaper in Chicago. She has been assigned to cover the story of a possible child serial killer in a small town in Missouri. She was given this story mainly because this small town happens to be her hometown.
We know that Camille is a physically beautiful, but very troubled young woman. We know that she does not want to go home, and throughout the course of this disturbing novel we find out why.
I found this to be a very interesting story, and a page-turner which is high compliment. This book does an excellent job of showing the repercussions of child abuse, and what life is like in a small town.
The only reason this book did not get 5 stars is the mystery aspect. I cannot say more without a spoiler, but I found that part of the resolution improbable for a variety of reasons.
Still, this is a suspenseful, *different* book, and I think that the character of Camille Preaker will stay with me for a long time. I would definitely give Gillian Flynn another try.Sharp Objects: A Novel Overview

Mama Sees Stars (A Mace Bauer Mystery) ReviewLook-out Himmarshee, the craziness of Hollyweird is moving into your small-town!
When a big name Hollywood movie begins filming in town Mama and her girls Maddie, Marty and Mace are wrapped up in the drama of it all.
Mama's the star of the show both in her own mind and on the pages of author Deborah Sharp's fourth Mace Bauer Mystery. From the dead producer found on set to the final scene, Mama fans will love her latest escapades.
Mace thinks someone is intent on shutting down the production when shortly after the producers body is found shots ring out. With the help of her on-again-off-again boyfriend, Miami-cop Carlos, Mace has to find out who-dun-it before the others stars and star-struck Mama are hurt.
I have loved every one of the Mama books. I didn't think another could top the last in the series, Mama Gets Hitched, but with the drama and star power of the cast of characters in Mama Sees Stars, the latest book rockets to the top of my list of favorites.

Mama Does Time (A Mace Bauer Mystery) ReviewI read a lot of mysteries. I started out with the "English Cottage" mysteries, so it's no surprise that I prefer mysteries that have a good sense of place, time and character. I also like mysteries that are part of a series. It's difficulty to find a good mystery, so when I do, I want there to be more.
I've also read a fair number of first-time authors, probably because I harbor a secret dream of being one myself. I'm pretty critical of first-timers. But I have to say that I really liked Deborah Sharp's MAMA DOES TIME. It has a comfortable voice. She doesn't try too hard to be funny--interecting humor in a way that doesn't call attention to itself. And Sharp has a delightful sense of time, place and familial relationships.
It meets all of my criteria. It's a great read--and there are more to come! How cool is that?Mama Does Time (A Mace Bauer Mystery) Overview
Meet Mama: a true Southern woman with impeccable manners, sherbet-colored pantsuits, and four prior husbands, able to serve sweet tea and sidestep alligator attacks with equal aplomb. Mama's antics — especially her penchant for finding trouble — drive her daughters Mace, Maddie, and Marty to distraction.
One night, while settling in to look for ex-beaus on COPS, Mace gets a frantic call from her mother. This time, the trouble is real: Mama found a body in the trunk of her turquoise convertible and the police think she's the killer. It doesn't help that the handsome detective assigned to the case seems determined to prove Mama's guilt or that the cowboy who broke Mace's heart shows up at the local Booze 'n' Breeze in the midst of the investigation. Before their mama lands in prison — just like an embarrassing lyric from a country-western song — Mace and her sisters must find the real culprit.
