The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry: Love, Laughter, and Tears at the World's Most Famous Cooking School ReviewA great book! As a culinary grad myself, I'm impressed how well the author caught the feverish vibe of being a culinary student. The behind the scenes look at Le Cordon Bleu is fascinating. Her story is funny and touching, and the writing is great. As a book, it's a fast read. I got it yesterday from Amazon and finished it this afternoon. It's one of those books that I was sorry when it ended. It made me wish I could drop everything and run off to Paris, but I will have to settle for trying the French onion soup recipe in the book instead.
Her "who am I? How did I get here?" questioning of her life makes this book of interest even to those who aren't necessarily into cooking. As she notes at the end, the lessons she learns from her culinary training extend beyond the kitchen. If you liked "Eat, Pray, Love" by Liz Gilbert or "Heat" by Bill Buford, then you'll certainly like this book.
Update on March 31: I bought my mom the audio CD of this book for her birthday. I was surprised to find that it came with a separate non-audio CD that has all the recipes so you can print them out. It makes a nice little booklet.

Insight Pocket Guide Loire Valley (Insight Pocket Guides Loire Valley) ReviewI happen to be a big fan of the Insight guides, my main criticism being that they aren't updated often enough. This Loire guide is the "pocket" version, so it's not comprehensive, but what's there is choice. There are brief descripions and history of the principal sights and chateaux, with very handy suggested itineraries and driving routes. There is very little restaurant and hotel information, but those two items don't happen to be Insight's strong suit even in the larger version. What I like about these guides, either full-size or pocket, is that the prose is clear and user-friendly, there are nice tidbits of history, and the general approach is respectful but not dry. Good information on cities like Tours and Orleans. I wouldn't buy this as my only Loire guide, but it is a useful addition--if Insight makes a full-size Loire guide, go for that one.Insight Pocket Guide Loire Valley (Insight Pocket Guides Loire Valley) Overview

Insight Pocket Guide Bologna ReviewThis was probably one of the worst tour books I've ever taken on vacation. My husband I love to do walking tours, which this book had many. Unfortunately, the maps and directions they included were terrible. Sometimes the maps didn't match the directions, or the maps were completely inaccurate. This is a shame considering the book was published in 2006, so it's not outdated. I have to qualify this by saying that we've toured Europe quite a lot and have done tons of walking tours, so it's not like we were newbies. Additionally, the tours did not include many of the major sights in Bologna. In Ferrara it described the main cathedral in town as a disappointment, which I found odd considering it was magnificent inside (I realize this is subjective). However, it's probably a good idea to stay factual due to the subjective nature of whether or not a historic point is "a disappointment" or not. I would recommend the Cadogan Guide to Bologna and Emilia Romagna instead. It's not as fluffy and colorful as the insight guide, but it has 10x more information and the maps are accurate. CultureShock Australia: A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette ReviewCulture Shock! Austtralia an interesting read, a good addition for anyone planning to travel to OZ. The book appears to be written for prospective Asian immigrants, through the eyes of a English born author Ilsa Sharp. I found the first chapters rather negative, pointing out some unfavouable opinions and facts, and I wondered why Ms Sharp wanted to immigrate to this country. Generally a humorous and in the most part a fair assessment of OZ. But, may I indicate some misconceptions and omissions. Everyone knows that the European settlement started from a convict origins, but the vast number of the new comers were immigrants. OZ is not ashamed of its beginnings, and tracing your family has become an ever growing past time for many families - yes the common folk. Alas, I found none of my family in the prison system and lament this lack. It is of special interest and prized to have a nefarious relative and is not an insult to point this out (as many have tried), but rather reflects the ignorance of the person attempting to be insulting. In the past decade, our history is becoming ever present in our daily life, both the good and the bad bits. The book ties to say that no Asian had lived in OZ till recently, it is a pity they missed out of the Chinese folk who came here around the Gold Rush days - yes almost as long as the Europeans. A town called Broome in Western Australia has had close connections to the Malays and Indonesians prior to the First Fleet. Ms Sharp missed the contibution of the ANZACs in World War One - the Western Front - France and Belgium- they died in their thousands, along side those of other Commonwealth nations and US troops. It is said at least one out of every family were killed in this war. They were called 'diggers' as they dug the trenches, where they died. Lest we forget. The thoughts of independence started from here, to stand on our own two feet as a nation in her own right. I was further surprised that under 'survival sense' that heat stroke/exhaustion and sun burn were not mentioned - a real danger, as a German couple found out recently. Respect for mother nature. A surprising misconception is the lack of formality in business. Ms Sharp has sited several situations, number 3, really bothered me. The option that is correct is A, we are a parochial people and hold store in good manners, we don't always thumb our noses at every situation. If a worker did choose option B they would be out of a job or out of business. I did not find the conclusions expressed to be funny - I found it insulting. I did not look at all closely at some sections, politics and economics { as they change everyother day) and anything printed can only be historical in context.
