Physical Therapy of the Shoulder (Clinics in Physical Therapy) ReviewThe fourth edition looks the coolest of all previous editions due to its metallic blue cover. The information inside ain't bad either.
Written by a physical therapist, this book is more for people in the field, such as PT's, athletic trainer's or even ortho docs- in other words people who specialize in the shoulder. I found it to be a great reference book to keep on my desk as it covers every major shoulder problem, from frozen shoulder, to impingement issues, to brachial plexus problems. However non-medical readers looking for a less technical book to treat their shoulder pain might be interested in Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff.Physical Therapy of the Shoulder (Clinics in Physical Therapy) Overview

Mastering Autodesk Revit Architecture 2012 (Autodesk Official Training Guides) ReviewThis is the most complete and advanced reference book for anyone who is in the process of learning Revit. As an expert Revit user with over six years of experience, I can say with confidence that this book covers everything from the basic tools to the most advanced and complex topics. It is easy to see that the authors have a deep, practical knowledge in the use of the software. The book is organized in a very logical, coherent way. Chapters one through four cover the general concepts behind BIM, the basic Revit tools, and workflow best practices. The book also includes a chapter on advanced modeling with very interesting exercises. As a project designer, I really appreciate Chapter 12: a complete chapter devoted to visualization. This book is about the proper use of the software, and it can really help you whether you are starting to learn Revit or you are a seasoned user. The return on investment for this well-written book can be measured by your increased ability to design and produce quality architecture.
Thank you to James, Phil, and Eddy for a job well done.

Jungle, The ReviewLithuanian immigrant Jurgis Rudkus and his new bride Ona, along with several other extended family members, try to survive in the "Back of the Yards" district of Chicago. Strapping Jurgis quickly finds employment in the meat packing business and the family begins to eke out a very modest living.
The appeal of home ownership quickly becomes their undoing. They invest their life savings as the downpayment and due to unplanned costs of homeownership (interest, taxes, repairs, etc), they quickly fall behind in their finances. This requires all family members to seek employment, which allows them to hold their heads above water. Unfortunately, the seasonal swings of work, ill health and brutal Chicago winters lead to further financial struggles.
A variety of further circumstances such as death, illness and infidelity lead to choices that continue to test the morals of the characters. Each struggle with the choices necessary for their survival. All are changed forever by the "evils" of the system.
The story details the horrific working conditions of the Stockyards laborers, the deplorable practices followed by the meat packing industry itself and the corruption associated with a capitalistic system. Yes, socialism is an underlying theme in this novel that becomes more evident at novel end.
Overall a very well written novel that provides a glimpse into the despicable conditions endured by the labor force of the Stockyards. No issues with the Kindle edition.Jungle, The Overview

Expert F# (Expert's Voice in .NET) ReviewThe Good
- Practical.
- High example density.
- Broad coverage of a lot of practical F# topics.
- Good depth on all the important practical stuff.
- I felt like I learned a lot, not only about F#, but about some cool C# features too.
- I felt like I'd be a lot more productive as a programmer if I could master the language.
The (not so) Bad
- Structurally, I initially got lost with some of the more complex examples. And it was straining to page back and forth re-reading things until I grasped the concepts. The density of information in the text sometimes makes it less valuable as a teaching aid and more valuable as a reference.
The (not so) Ugly
- I could not get one of the async examples to actually compile. I had to search the web for some hints to add declarations that seem to have been omitted from either the example code or F# implementation itself. In short, the example code, my development environment, F# itself, of some combination thereof was missing what appears to be an extension method for WebRequest.GetResponseAsync. I had to code it myself. But once I did, it worked! (This might not be a criticism of the book.)Expert F# (Expert's Voice in .NET) Overview

The Jungle: The Uncensored Original Edition ReviewOriginally published in 1906 by Upton Sinclair, THE JUNGLE sent shockwaves throughout the United States that resulted in cries for labor and agricultural reforms. It is indeed rare that a book should have such a political impact, but although Sinclair may have been surprised at the results, it is apparent while reading this novel that his words form a political agenda of its own. It should be noted that Sinclair was a devout Socialist who traveled to Chicago to document the working conditions of the world-famous stockyards. Sinclair originally published this book in serial form in the Socialist newspaper, The Appeal to Reason. But as a result of the popularity of this series Sinclair decided to try to publish in a form of a novel.
Sinclair widely utilized the metaphor of the jungle (survival of the fittest, etc.) throughout this book to reflect how the vulnerable worker is at the mercy of the powerful packers and politicians. Mother Nature is represented as a machine who destroys the weak and protects the elite powerful. To illustrate his sentiments Sinclair wrote of family of Jurgis and Ona who immigrated to Chicago from Lithuania in search of the American dream. They arrive in all innocence and believe that hard work would result in a stable income and security. But they soon realize that all the forces are against them. During the subsequent years Jurgis tries to hold on what he has but he is fighting a losing battle. It is not until he stumbles upon a political meeting that his eyes upon the evils of capitalism and the sacredness of socialism.
If one is to read THE JUNGLE, then they should do themselves a favor and seek out this version. It is the original, uncensored version that Sinclair originally intended to publish. It contains much more details of the horrifying conditions of the meatpacking industry that Jurgis and his family were subjected to. I originally read the standard version of this book many years ago, but I didn't hestitate to invest in this edition as I wanted to read what Sinclair had originally intended.
THE JUNGLE is an important book on the labor history of the United States, the non-fairytale immigration of foreigners into the melting pot, and the history of Chicago. Recommended, but not for the faint of heart. The Jungle: The Uncensored Original Edition OverviewFor nearly a century, the original version of Upton Sinclair's classic novel has remained almost entirely unknown. When it was published in serial form in 1905, it was a full third longer than the censored, commercial edition published in book form the following year. That expurgated commercial edition edited out much of the ethnic flavor of the original, as well as some of the goriest descriptions of the meat-packing industry and much of Sinclair's most pointed social and political commentary. The text of this new edition is as it appeared in the original uncensored edition of 1905. It contains the full 36 chapters as originally published, rather than the 31 of the expurgated edition. A new foreword describes the discovery in the 1980s of the original edition and its subsequent suppression, and a new introduction places the novel in historical context by explaining the pattern of censorship in the shorter commercial edition.

Fly by Night ReviewAs I write this review, it is February 2006. The year, such as it is, is about a sixth over. There is plenty of time for original stories to be published, new works of fiction to pop-up overnight, and fabulous samples of writing to catch the eye. On some level, I know this. I accept it. But then I look down on my review copy of "Fly By Night" and my eyes practically fill with tears. I am looking, you see, at my favorite book of 2006. I already know this. Oh sure, back in January I was sure that my favorite book of 2006 was going to be Karen Cushman's, "The Loud Silence of Francine Green". But while my love for "Francine" is just as clear and concise as ever, Frances Hardinge's whopper of a first novel has truly stolen my heart away. Not since Philip Pullman has a book created such a finely wrought and delicately planned out alternative world. But unlike Pullman (who has his charms BUT) Hardinge's book has a distinct advantage over its competitors. It's brilliant, yes. Well-plotted, well-paced, and well-characterized, yes. But it is also drop dead funny. We're talking about a book in which a girl named after a housefly with a pipe in her teeth goes prancing across the country with her homicidal goose in tow. I haven't a clue if children will actually like this book. Quite frankly, I do not care. I love it as deeply as I have ever loved any title and you can put THAT in your own pipe and smoke it.
Mosca Mye didn't quite intend to burn up her aunt and uncle's mill while escaping from the overly sodden town of Chough. This much we know. She did, however, have every intention of freeing a rapscallion caught in the stocks that very night. The man's name is Eponymous Clent and he's a con man of the most florid degree. Mosca grew up learning how to read from her bookworm father and now, orphaned and trapped in a life she does not like, she sees Clent and his beautiful way with words as a means of getting out of town. They won't be skipping out alone, of course. Clasped firmly under her arm is Mosca's faithful and deadly goose Saracen. On their travels the two run afoul of a ship's captain, rescue a lady from a highwayman, and then dig themselves deeper and deeper into the political intrigue and schemes of the town of Mandelion's rulers, guildsmen, and potential oppressors. Who could know that the very fate of a nation rests on a single eyebrowless girl's slim shoulders and the wingtips of a particularly snarky bird.
What my little description here doesn't do is give you an idea of where this book takes place. Hardinge has created what she calls a Fractured Realm. This world bears some similarities to England at the beginning of the eighteenth century, but with definite differences. In this land, Parliament has dispossessed all royalty and has been trying to figure out which potential ruler should have the crown for several decades now. In their stead, Guilds of skilled working men have grown strong and powerful. The top three, for the purposes of this book, are The Company of Locksmiths (who can enter any domicile with their keys), The Company of Stationers (who have every right to burn and ban the books they deem heresy), and The Company of Watermen (who guard and police the rivers). Got all that? Cause I haven't even gotten into the religious aspects. In this world every day and hour has a different saint or Beloved. People worship different ones. Mosca, in this case, was born under Palpitattle, better known as He Who Keeps Flies out of Jams and Butter Churns. Hence her name. At one point during the height of the political problems a sect known as The Birdcatchers caused unparalleled destruction and chaos all in the name of destroying the religion of The Beloved. They were put down eventually but the country is still reeling from their ascent.
Does this sound like a children's book to you? No? Well bear with me then. There are children out there who read voraciously. For whom a little Tolkein and a little Pullman are nothing but a walk in the park. To these children, I offer up, "Fly By Night". It hasn't any literary equivalent, of course. There's the obvious ode to Dickens here and there (Clent is just a modified dandified Fagan with a pretty tongue) but an even stronger connection to Leon Garfield's old books. If you happen to know anyone who enjoyed "Smith" or "Black Jack" or "The Strange Affair of Adelaide Harris", then this book is an obvious follow-up. If you have never read these books yourself, go and do so immediately and don't come back to me until you've safely devoured them. They are brilliant, but Hardinge is more intelligent and well-written by far. Partly this is due to her language. She writes descriptions that are lovely in their simplicity. Sentences like, "How strange it was to look down the barrel of a pistol! It was not exactly fear, more a soft shock, like being hit in the stomach with a snowball". And best of all you like the characters. You like the villains who become heroes and the heroes who become villains. You revel in never knowing whom to trust, just as Mosca never does. You do know one thing though. Whatever storm happens to blow, you can always trust Mosca and Saracen. There's a wonderful certainty in that.
I will end with a small passage from the book in which Clent starts using his tongue to its truest advantage. It is a description of a man. In it Clent says, "Mabwick Toke is the head of the Stationers' chapter in Mandelion. He can quote the whole of Pessimese's `Endeavors,' from Amblebirth to Aftermath, in the original Acrylic. He can speak twenty languages, half of them living, including two from the Aragash Heights, and one that can only be spoken with a coin under the tongue. When he travels, his carriage is lined with shelves so snug with books that the very breeze must squeeze for entry. He once uncovered a league of subversives by identifying a single silken thread in the paper weave of an opera ticket. If wits were pins, the man would be a veritable hedgehog". If you are a person hoping to write a children's book someday, I strongly urge you NOT to read "Fly By Night". Such passages like the one quoted above can only bring you to tears. This was written as Hardinge's FIRST novel for children. It's enough to make you weep and crow with joy all at once. Let us hope that many many more will be in the works soon.Fly by Night Overview

The Wheel of Sharp Weapons ReviewAtisha (982-1054) with commentary by Geshe Ngawang Dhargyey, co-author of "Advice from a Spiritual Friend," plus teaching stories (e.g. p. 53, stanza 57), quotations from Buddhist masters, personal observations, and history of the book (page 37). Karma, law of cause & effect, like Newton's Law, is described with quotes (p. 43): Tsongkhapa said: "Miserliness is the way to become poor, not rich. Generosity is the means to become rich, not poor" & Sakya Pandita said, "The result of generosity is always richness, the result of miserliness is always poverty." Thus, what happens to us is the result of our own past actions in this life or prior ones:
"In short then, whenever unfortunate sufferings
We haven't desired crash upon us like thunder,
This is the same as the smith who had taken
His life with a sword he had fashioned himself.
Our suffering is the wheel of sharp weapons returning
Full circle upon us from wrongs we have done.
Hereafter let's always have care and awareness
Never to act in non-virtuous ways." (p. 12, stanza 46)
Bodhichitta is compassion for others (at the relative level) vs. self-absorption. Shantideva says (p. 57, stanza 46): "All calamities in the world arise from cherishing self, while all fortune arises from cherishing others." Thus, Bodhichitta, selflessness, and karma are related. As Dhargyey states "The enemy is self-grasping and his attendant is the self-cherishing thought (p. 62, stanza 53).
"We have selfish desires and horrible angerWhich fester inside us, we would never admit;
Yet without provocation we criticize others And self-righteously charge them with faults we possess.
Trample him, trample him, dance on the headOf this treacherous concept of selfish concern.
Tear out the heart of this self-centered butcher Who slaughters our chance to gain final release.
(p. 18, stanza 68)
Dhargyey provides a teaching stories: (p. 61, stanza 51): "Once there was an old cat who was no longer able to catch mice, so he told them that, as he had vowed against killing, they could circumambulate him every day. In this way he was able to catch the last of them." The text also describes Tonglen = mental giving and receiving-attuning with others' suffering and send them our happiness:
"As all that is wrong can be traced to one source-Our concern for ourselves whom we cherish the most- We must meditate now on the kindness of others.
Accepting the suffering that they never wished for, We must dedicate fully our virtues to all.
(p. 25, stanza 96)
The text is beautiful whether you agree with karma, reincarnation or not. The author points out (pp. 28 & 82, stanza 110) that things are not necessarily as they appear and states (p. 87), "We too should study the thoughts and tenets of others in order to understand our own school of thought."The Wheel of Sharp Weapons Overview

WikiBooks: C Sharp Programming ReviewShame on me for buying this book. No reviews provided beforehand so I thought, what the heck, perhaps I can learn something from this $3 book but this was not the case. A tall latte would have been a better purchase.... or driving down the street and throwing $3 out the window. I'll never try a Wiki Book again because of this experience.
Here are my points:
Book is very basic for anyone familiar with programming and C#. Very high level overview of technical aspects and is clearly not written to convey valuable programming lessons.
Reads as a sort of mix between a language spec and a very basic tutorial/guide.
I will give credit to the authors for covering all major topic areas.
Pagination is all off. Some letters are on a single line, then some lines are all jammed together and very difficult to read.
Fonts are all goofy and mixed up so this is not an easy thing to read.
Very little to learn --especially if just starting out with programming and C# -- some topics will leave a new programmer lost.
Not updated for most recent releases of C# such as 4.0.
Biggest issue is not with the authors but the marketing of such materials as a 'book'. This was more of a glorified pamphlet. I found little functional value with this item.WikiBooks: C Sharp Programming OverviewC# (pronounced "see sharp") is a multi-paradigm programming language encompassing imperative, declarative, functional, generic, object-oriented (class-based), and component-oriented programming disciplines. The Emotional Calendar: Understanding Seasonal Influences and Milestones to Become Happier, More Fulfilled, and in Control of Your Life ReviewWhen the New Year makes its entrance, it can be a very stressful time. During the final leg of the holiday season, many people self-medicate their anxieties with alcohol, food, or drugs. The idea of taking stock of the previous twelve months can send people into psychological overdrive.
It doesn't have to be that way. Dr. John R. Sharp, a psychiatrist on the faculty at Harvard Medical School, has delved into how the overlap between seasonal, cultural, and personal factors can impact us emotionally. He presents these instructive insights in his new book "The Emotional Calendar."
The period between Thanksgiving and New Year's fits into what Sharp describes as a staple of the American "cultural calendar," which can be the catalyst for "emotional disruption." These "hot spots" often overlap with an individual's personal "emotional calendar," which is comprised of birthdays, anniversaries, deaths, and remembrances of high and low points. For adults, memories--both positive and negative-- become "triggers," something that causes "feelings from the past to emerge." Grown-ups have experienced losses and disappointments, and therefore have a repository of associative memories to reflect upon. Many of these are rich in the "triggers' that can set us off. Recognizing and understanding these reactions can lead to increased self-awareness.
It is important to look at your personal experiences, and examine how they have conditioned your emotional responses. One person's beautiful blanket of pristine snow can prompt another individual to remember a broken arm suffered in the aftermath of a treacherous blizzard. Sharp explains, "The mindset doesn't have to be set in stone." We shape our brain connections through experiences that become "neurally encoded." If the holiday season or the onset of winter has been a time of anticipatory negativity, Sharp proposes that you can reformulate the personal expectation you are conditioned to--and break the "victim of circumstance" format.
Why do seasons carry emotional baggage? The problem comes when we feel out of sync. For Sharp, the most dependable key to coping is "self-awareness." He points out that "any pattern that plays out over a period of 12 to 15 years--especially early in life--is bound to leave an imprint." His definition of a birthday is "an emotionally charged marker on how we track time."
Sharp outlines that our emotional calendars are closely associated with the way our memories function, clarifying, "Our brain encodes, catalogs, and cross-references events." However, a person can change their response to those memories, as "our brains don't have to remain static." As Sharp states, "It is possible to create a new experience, innovate a tradition, take a personal inventory, and concentrate on self-aware behaviors."
He counsels sorting through feelings, finding the sources of our emotions, and recognizing the positive and negative patterns in our lives. With an increase in self-observation, one can gain perspective and identify elements that point to a recurring problem-- and then steer themselves in a different direction.
New beginnings of any sort can be challenging. Sharp lets readers know they are not isolated in their perceptions, while giving them a set of tools for mindfulness, understanding, and being pro-active about their emotional health.
This review is excerpted from an article which originally appeared on the women's health site Empowher.

C# and the .NET Platform ReviewI was informed by my manager to purchase a C# book, and I set out to do some research as to which book would fit my needs. I stumbled on this title as one recommended instead of another that was reviewed here on Amazon.com Based on the reviews posted for this book, I decided to purchase it. The positive reviews for this book are well-founded.
One of the very first things I noticed about this book is that it has a sticker on it that says that online updates for the final version of .NET are available. I went to the site and downloaded the list of changes to the book. The list was actually fairly short and the changes straightforward. I regard this as a good sign.
The book is well laid out and clear, the first 130+ pages dedicated to fundamental concepts and structures of C#. A 70-page introduction to OOP, in the context of C#, follows. The next few chapters deal with advanced topics including container classes and threads. Next the reader is launched into more graphically-oriented topics. Finally, the topics move into such as object serialization, database access, and web-centric subjects. The progression from subject to subject is logical and smooth, and each section is written clearly so as not to leave the reader in the dark and each presented after its prerequisites.
Example code in this book is clear, concise, and explained. The source to the examples is *not* included with the book, but is available readily for download.
This book is a great start into C# and .NET. It is *not* comprehensive, but it covers most of the important topics that get used regularly. Seriously consider this title when investigating C# and/or .NET.C# and the .NET Platform Overview

Field Guide: Southern California ReviewWorth the money for the aerial views of the landscape of Southern California alone, this book explains with clarity and charm how the land is put together, and it does it from the passenger seat of your vehicle. The Trip Guides follow major highways and take advantage of cuttings that reveal the layering of the rocks. Superb drawings and annotated photographs enhanced my understanding and showed me what to look for. You will never take the road from LA to Vegas again without looking at the rocks.Field Guide: Southern California Overview

GRAVE IMPORTS (The Ray Sharp Novels) ReviewGRAVE IMPORTS kept me up late. Author Eric Stone leads the reader on a thrilling journey to the remote corners of Cambodia, Thailand, and Hong Kong. One can smell the gunpowder, eavesdrop on the cacophony of Chinese dialects, observe the limbless beggars, and taste the sting of pungent chili.
In GRAVE IMPORTS, protagonist Ray Sharp is compelled to investigate a smuggling enterprise that is robbing ancient Cambodian temples of their priceless artifacts. Still recovering from an experience that plagues him with nightmares and occasionally drives him to the bottle, Sharp must confront not only his own demons, but a lawless world of opportunists and manipulators. Though many of the characters are unique and deeply sympathetic, some tread a narrow line between survival and corruption. Sharp can't pass judgment, as the lines he once drew between right and wrong have blurred or moved. I heartily recommend the journey through GRAVE IMPORTS, which will leave you with a racing pulse. It will also have you pondering the clouded moralities of war and enterprise.
GRAVE IMPORTS (The Ray Sharp Novels) OverviewThe second Ray Sharp detective thriller, set in Asia and based on true stories. Is it possible to smuggle the soul of an entire country?Just another due diligence job, checking out a Chinese art supplies company. Simple. Ray Sharp knows he could do with a little simplicity - his life has been far too muddy lately. He needs a chance to gather his thoughts and repair his heart. But digging around in a company's back-room business proves to be a dark, dusty, dangerous affair...Beautiful, tempting women, locked away in crates. Smiling serene smiles, cocking their hips suggestively, the apsaras are the heavens' dancing girls, carved into stone. These precious relics are being chipped away from the already crumbling walls of Cambodia's ancient temples. Stolen and smuggled by erudite killers eager to finance their bloody wars. What can one man hope to achieve in the face of such callous disregard for a country, its history, and its people?"What starts as a fast-paced thriller turns into a deeper social novel concerned with poverty, slavery, and the best and worst of the human condition. This will appeal to fans of John Burdett and Colin Cotterill, as well as patrons who enjoy exotic Asian settings and a mystery plot with some substance." - Library Journal, starred review."A complacent reader will not get the full affect of books such as Grave Imports. It is a mystery/thriller but it is also a commentary on the modern world, its foibles and its fancies. The world seen through Ray Sharp's eyes is not a pretty world, it is not nice, but it has heart and hope. The story starts with a statue of heads, it ends in a temple of a head-a fitting symbol of this thriller for the thinking man." -Front Street Reviews"The exotic and dangerous East comes to vibrant life in Grave Imports by Eric Stone. Bristling with fascinating details about culture, customs, and history, the story hurls the reader on a violent journey into the dark underworld of illicit art transportation and sales. Relax into your favorite easy chair. You're in for a wild and riveting ride." -Gayle Lynds

Sharp Teeth: A Novel (P.S.) ReviewThis debut novel at first seems strange,
bizarre,
difficult to take the first bite.
But then, the story gets going,
and you forget that it's written in free verse
- except that it doesn't rhyme,
and you know how I am about rhymes.
But still,
What's not to like about a story
About werewolves?
or was it weredogs?
Prowling the streets of LA,
changing at will,
killing and devouring without leaving a trace
- sometimes not even bloody tissue,
licking the ground Ajax clean.
Yet being civilized enough to know
that the most important dog in the pack
is the b!tch
Three packs,
one led by a lawyer at first,
who gets outmaneuvered
in an ironic kind of way
and forced to hide in the guise of woman's best friend
until he can regroup and reclaim,
and remark his territory.
But Lark has a plan
to infiltrate and conquer
It's also about Anthony the dogcatcher.
Who doesn't really want to be like the rest
- of dogcatchers, that is
"Perhaps over time he will become like them
with their permanent stains and bitter dispositions.
But Christ almighty, he thinks,
I hope not"
Anthony feeds the dogs tacos
that he can't afford
and one day he falls in love
Then there's the cop
Peabody
Investigating missing people
and dogs
and bloody trails of big red prints
These dogs don't play poker
preferring the game of bridge
especially Cutter and Blue, who have a knack for the game.
They follow Lark and the Ukan way,
but things get complicated when their fellow bridge players
turn out to be quite different than they seem
and there's also the new pack...
"The new pack follows a different form,
nobody has a name for it,
but it's a rough way of life."
Unusual
Yet compelling
This book reads like a graphic novel
in staccato bursts of
blood, gore, gristle
...and doggie dreams.
Dark, brutal
and memorable
especially on debut.Amanda Richards, April 8, 2008
