Ethical Problems in the Practice of Law ReviewThis textbook is vaguely written, unorganized, and poorly edited. The ABA rules are sprinkled throughout in a haphazard manner in no particular order except as relevant to the particular chapter. There is no comprehensive collection of these rules for easy access anywhere throughout.
There are few cases to assist in illustrating these rules; the authors have apparently spent all their time transforming helpful cases into open ended hypothetical problems that are of little to no help in actually informing the reader. This textbook format is unique and unusual in law books and should be applauded for creativity, even if the result is an incoherent inability to pass on information to the student.
From an editing standpoint, there are typos throughout that are embarrassing for Aspen Publishing as well as the authors. All of Chapter 6's headings on every page read "Chatper 6", for example. Just incredibly poorly done. My worst textbook of the entire 3 years of law school.Ethical Problems in the Practice of Law Overview

EAch case is broken down and carefully, yet thoroughly analyzed. This is a great tool for helping the reader understand the full extent of proceedings as well as court rulings. The information in each case is dissected and terms are defined so that each step of each proceeding is completely understood. I love the series and have really appreciated the application of the law to different hypos. This book is written in a easy to understand fashion and for the most part breaks down some complicated subjects into common language. Materials in Trial Advocacy: Problems and Cases, 6e ReviewThis book has a wonderful collection of trial skill problems for teachers's of trial advocacy and mock trials. What I like best about the book is that the authors have done a wonderful job of limiting the facts a student needs to understand in order to work on a particular trial technique. For example, in voir dire, the authors provide one page of facts about an automobile negligence case. From that set of facts, students are then asked to practice jury selection based on those facts. By boiling the facts down to just one page instead of a typical case file which could be 70 pages, the authors give the students the opportunity to focus on the technique of jury selection instead of wasting time sifting through a case file.
This book is a classic among trial advocacy teachers that provides problems for students regarding every trial skill. Be aware that the book is not intended to teach trial techniques or provide answers to the problems it gives. Land Transfer and Finance: Cases and Materials ReviewNot a very effective book for my learning style. I would have requested the Professor use any book but this one. Some concepts were well done, while others didn't seem to be thorough or definite enough. The print changes in places like it was pasted together. If your professor requires this book, be ready for sheer boredom. The Process of Legal Research ReviewI teach a legal research and writing course with this textbook at UCLA and have found it very helpful. The book is well organized, has good homework problems, reasonably clear writing and fine illustrations. My students find it very helpful in their studies. Its only two flaws are that it does not use California law in its problems and has only one problem at its end to test all of the student's research skills. In a perfect world, two comprehensive research problems would be included to ensure that students have fully grasped the principles involved. While I have used the 4th edition over the last 3 years with great success, I am confident that this 5th edition (which I have read and am presently using in my class) will be equally effective. I only give it four stars because of the two flaws described above and the limited answers to homework problems given in the teacher's edition.The Process of Legal Research Overview

Legal Writing and Analysis ReviewTHEY are forcing me to read this book for my first year lawyering process class in law school. It really is a good book. It's nuts and bolts of "doing" law, including reading, writing, analyzing. I read a lot of those "buy this book and you won't be scared of law school" books, and with few exceptions they were disappointing. I am so happy to finally be into the meat of law school. While I would not recommend buying this book to the casual reader, it would be worth a glance if you are starting, or considering starting law school. Support your local library!
