It has great color illustrations and is very easy to read. The full sized text was assigned in my assessment class so I went ahead and bought the handheld. I would reccomend it to any nursing student. The author takes great care to define medical terms within the text so I'm not constantly reaching for my medical dictionary. There is no glossary, but the accompanying student lab manual has one for each chapter. Setting: How to Create and Sustain a Sharp Sense of Time and Place in Your Fiction (Elements of Fiction Writing) ReviewI've read all the books in the Elements of Fiction Writing series and this is how I'd rank them.
"Scene & Structure" "Characters & Viewpoint" "Beginnings, Middles & Ends"
The above three books are invaluable -- must reads. They are the best of the series, in my opinion, and are packed with good information on every page. Well-done.
"Conflict, Action & Suspense" "Description" "Plot" "Manuscript Submission" "Setting"
The above five books are good, solid reads. Again, they contain good information and cover the subject decently.
"Voice & Style" "Dialogue"
To me, the last two books need to be rewritten. They are by far the weakest of the series. Both suffer from an annoying style, particularly Dialogue, and both are very skimpy on real information. Neither one is very helpful.

A Writer's Workbook: Daily Exercises for the Writing Life ReviewFirst, I know this review looks too long, but it might help you out. So please, read on.
I read a few of the "chapters" (exercise sections) of this book and found it to be a little too conversational. Sure, we all value a charming and witty instruction book to a dry academic one, but I still think she brings nothing new to this genre of book.
It seems like she could easily have gotten all of these ideas from other writing books, seminars and articles, and frankly, most of them are better written than this one. You've probably encountered most of the ideas put forth in this book, beginning with an intro akin to:
"Oh, we all say we're going to write, but we never get around to it. Well never, fear, because [insert generic writing guide book title] is here to kick your rear in gear!"
Something like that.
There are really so many different types of books, kits, articles, memoirs, classes and manifestos on the subject of writing, exercises, inspiration and so forth. (Just do a search on Amazon for Writing Instruction or Writing for Publication.) I really can't recommend this book, though. Unfortunately, the author also thinks it's cute or somehow necessary to write quite a few words in ALLCAPS to add emphatic notice to the concept. Personally, I think that WRITING like THIS every few PAGES looks unprofessional and can be quite IRRITATING. This stylistic flaw alone makes me wonder whether she's a very credible source. Is font manipulation creative? Sure, to an extent, but "all-caps" serves no purpose, and it's easy to do and banal.
I think that this work misses a point about writing: it requires self-discipline as well as inspiration and talent. It's easy and sometimes fun to get caught up in books like these, but really, if you just read a varity of nonfiction, novels and periodicals for a few hours each week you can begin to understand observational skills, and you won't need these silly little exercises. You'll be inspired by what you read, and how the articles or whatever you read remind you of your own experiences.

So, the point is, if you feel that you need to spend money on a book like this, perhaps you don't have the ability to discipline yourself into a steady routine of journaling and writing. Buying a book like this one will allow you to read some tips and eventually forget about it. After brief excitement and productivity, you'll be back to square one; with no self-discipline, you'll never apply this book to your life week-by-week as you should. It will collect dust next to your yoga books.
I offer this criticism not to sound nasty, but to make you think about what you are buying.
It's simple to buy a Men's Fitness magazine, for instance, but it won't help you unless you actually work out routinely. Same thing.I guess the bottom line is that this book is okay for a casual read, but look it over in a bookstore first to see if you really want to pay the price of owning it.

Write Tight: How to Keep Your Prose Sharp, Focused and Concise ReviewAs a beginning opinion columnist I quickly learned that wordiness can kill your column. How do you get the greatest effect with only 700 words? Brohaugh's book tells you.
The principles he discusses in Write Tight apply to columnists, reporters, technical writers, or novelists. Whether you write for fun or profit, his advice will make your work more impactful. The world is full of books on better writing, so why is Brohaugh's book special? It's actually fun to read.
His illustrations of wordiness are often hilarious even when his heavy shoe stomps your toes. Rather than just list poor choices of words, grammar, and style, he weaves them into his writing to show how silly and wasteful they are.

Sharp Writing: Building Better Writing Skills (Kaplan Sharp Series) ReviewKaplan's "Sharp Writing" is a practical overview of grammar and usage, but is quite basic. If you are looking for a book that will provide you with more "Style" advice than grammar, I would recommend Style: Toward Clarity and Grace (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing). I would recommend the Kaplan book for anyone looking for quick refresher or short reference work.
The first section of the book provides an overview and refresher on the different grammatical categories, strucure/usage, puncution, tone, etc. The chapters in the first section cover very basic items such as "what is a noun" or "what is a verb" to a bit more complex topics such as "intransitive verbs," phrase/clause interaction, the passive voice (and its uses), and appositives. Each chapter uses the "Building Block Method" wherein Kaplan provides you with a basic quiz at the beginning, then information, and then a further quiz at the end of each chapter. This does help the reader to understand where their knowledge is lacking and pay more attention to those areas as they go through the book.
The second section is titled "Sharper Writing Stages" and shifts the focus of the book from grammar to strategies on actually writing your paper/book/etc. Kaplan provides a standard overview of common topics such as: brainstorming, outlining, journaling, researching, and paper structure (intro, body, conclusion). There is also a moderately detailed refresher on sentence structure, word choice, quotation usage, and revising your paper through editing (I particular found the editing symbol chart helpful). As with section 1, there are practice questions and quizes, but I found those less helpful in this section as the materical was not as rule based.
The third section is titled "Sharper Writing Formats" and focuses on putting the previous sections into practice in such ways as business writing, letter writing, etc. The section provides overviews of topics such as resumes, business emails, academic writing and personal letters, and provides formats and tips for each.
Ultimately the book is similar to what most people will probably cover in 11th or 12th grade English or possibly English 101 or 102 at University. However, if you are like me, you probably do not remember everything you learned in these courses and this book serves as a helpful reference and quick refresher.
