Employment Law: The Essential HR Desk Reference ReviewEmployment Law makes no claims it cannot fulfill, it says on the cover it's a "desk reference" and that's exactly what it is. It's meant to be used as a reference not to replace general counsel. The book is arranged like an encyclopedia in alpha order by the term. Once you find your term then the book offers a definition, case study in some cases and cross reference of related terms.
Nolo has always been a name I trust when it comes to legal issues. Even their website has helped me with personal issues where clarity was needed. When I first saw the book on Amazon; I made the mistake of overlooking the phrase "Desk Reference". I didn't expect the book to list HR terms and give definitions, but that is exactly what it is nothing more.
As an HR professional I think this book is great for the novice, as well as the seasoned HR professional in need of a quick definition or an explanation of terms. Knowing the terms are great but to use them correctly along with company policies and procedure is needed as well. I respect the fact that under the more complicated terms there's footnotes which offer the reader a tad bit more detail.
Whether you're trying to understand COBRA or what is meant by a "class action suit" it's here. My personal disclaimer is I think this book should be used for what it was intended; a desk reference and not to replace or even be used until your internal counsel arrives.

How to Buy a House in California ReviewYou don't have to live in California to benefit from the advice in this book. It covers a lot of the basics that any homebuyer should know.
The purchase of a home is one of the most important of a person's lifetime. It pays to put in the research needed to get a good price and a good home. The way the topic is covered here is easy to understand and they offer links to several outstanding online resources.
My only complaint is that they did not give much coverage to so-called "short sales". In today's market a lot of sales fall under this category. I think a book like this should probably devote an entire chapter just to that topic.How to Buy a House in California Overview

Ethical Problems in the Practice of Law ReviewThis textbook is vaguely written, unorganized, and poorly edited. The ABA rules are sprinkled throughout in a haphazard manner in no particular order except as relevant to the particular chapter. There is no comprehensive collection of these rules for easy access anywhere throughout.
There are few cases to assist in illustrating these rules; the authors have apparently spent all their time transforming helpful cases into open ended hypothetical problems that are of little to no help in actually informing the reader. This textbook format is unique and unusual in law books and should be applauded for creativity, even if the result is an incoherent inability to pass on information to the student.
From an editing standpoint, there are typos throughout that are embarrassing for Aspen Publishing as well as the authors. All of Chapter 6's headings on every page read "Chatper 6", for example. Just incredibly poorly done. My worst textbook of the entire 3 years of law school.Ethical Problems in the Practice of Law Overview

Tax Deductions for Professionals ReviewThis is a great book for a new professional starting their own office. It steps you through all the different types of business structures for professionals and the tax treat of each, in minute detail. Really great book, we're using it to start a law office. The same author has written another great book, Deduct it! Lower your Small Business Taxes. While it is also a great book, I would suggest that you NOT purchase both books. A lot of large sections of text are identical between the two books. For professionals, I'd just go with this one and skip Deduct It!Tax Deductions for Professionals Overview

Some concepts were well done, while others didn't seem to be thorough or definite enough. The print changes in places like it was pasted together. If your professor requires this book, be ready for sheer boredom.
