The Collapse of the German War Economy, 1944-1945: Allied Air Power and the German National Railway ReviewThrough most of the last half century, the Allied Strategic Air campaign against Germany has been criticized as ineffective. Alfred C. Mierzejewski suggests that this was only true till late 1944. After that, bombing became devastating.
In 1942 and '43, the U.S. and Britain attacked arms factories and housing respectively. The Germans kept fighting and war production kept going up.
In 1944, the Allies increasingly turned to synthetic petroleum plants and the German transportation system. The result was a catastrophic breakdown in all areas of the German war economy.
We'll never know what would have happened if the railyards serving the Ruhr's coal fields had been hit starting in 1940, but Mierzejewski makes a good case that it would have seriously weakened Germany much sooner, and quite possibly ended the war in 1944.
This is a very good study, well worth reading and thinking about. I recommend it to all my fellow armchair strategists. The Collapse of the German War Economy, 1944-1945: Allied Air Power and the German National Railway Overview

The Sharp End: The Fighting Man in World War II ReviewG.K. Chesterton said that "a...rational army would run away" and this book shows, better than any other that I have read, why it should and why, so often, it doesn't. In a field that includes Keegan's `Face Of Battle' this is high praise.
Focusing on the experiences of the ordinary Western Allied soldier during the Second World War Ellis discusses the circumstances affecting the lives of the front line soldier from recruitment through training and combat to his eventual fate.
Ellis examines the detail of what was actually happening to the individual Tommy or GI, using many first hand accounts and an appropriate admixture of statistics, without ever becoming heavy going or gratuitously gory. Where there are blood and tears they are there because that is how it was. This approach enables a number of popular myths about the war to be examined in a clearer light. His comparison of the experiences of members of the rifle companies of an infantry battalion during the Second World War with his predecessor of 1914-18 is especially illuminating as is his analysis of what actually keeps soldiers fighting.
I found the book impossible to stop reading and was left with a feeling of great sadness, profound respect for individuals who kept going in circumstances that I personally would find overwhelming and a greater understanding of the mechanics of war that tend to sink below the magnification of many conventional military histories. If you have any interest in the subject matter at all, or possibly in the reaction of ordinary people to extraordinary circumstances, you should read 'The Sharp End'.The Sharp End: The Fighting Man in World War II Overview

Sharp Shot (Junior Library Guild Selection (G.P. Putnam)) ReviewThis book was excellent. Well written, fast moving, and exciting. They remind me of modrn day Hardy boys and the old Bobsy Twins (since they are twins)I am 65 years old a a fan of Jack Higgins. I read it to be sure it was OK for my 12 year old granddaughter. They are definitely youth friendly. I found the entire series exciting to read.Sharp Shot (Junior Library Guild Selection (G.P. Putnam)) Overview

Sharp Teeth: A Novel (P.S.) ReviewThis debut novel at first seems strange,
bizarre,
difficult to take the first bite.
But then, the story gets going,
and you forget that it's written in free verse
- except that it doesn't rhyme,
and you know how I am about rhymes.
But still,
What's not to like about a story
About werewolves?
or was it weredogs?
Prowling the streets of LA,
changing at will,
killing and devouring without leaving a trace
- sometimes not even bloody tissue,
licking the ground Ajax clean.
Yet being civilized enough to know
that the most important dog in the pack
is the b!tch
Three packs,
one led by a lawyer at first,
who gets outmaneuvered
in an ironic kind of way
and forced to hide in the guise of woman's best friend
until he can regroup and reclaim,
and remark his territory.
But Lark has a plan
to infiltrate and conquer
It's also about Anthony the dogcatcher.
Who doesn't really want to be like the rest
- of dogcatchers, that is
"Perhaps over time he will become like them
with their permanent stains and bitter dispositions.
But Christ almighty, he thinks,
I hope not"
Anthony feeds the dogs tacos
that he can't afford
and one day he falls in love
Then there's the cop
Peabody
Investigating missing people
and dogs
and bloody trails of big red prints
These dogs don't play poker
preferring the game of bridge
especially Cutter and Blue, who have a knack for the game.
They follow Lark and the Ukan way,
but things get complicated when their fellow bridge players
turn out to be quite different than they seem
and there's also the new pack...
"The new pack follows a different form,
nobody has a name for it,
but it's a rough way of life."
Unusual
Yet compelling
This book reads like a graphic novel
in staccato bursts of
blood, gore, gristle
...and doggie dreams.
Dark, brutal
and memorable
especially on debut.Amanda Richards, April 8, 2008
