C# 4.0 How-To ReviewThis book's title does not quite match its content but the book's introduction does indicate this. This is primarily a very good book of code and code algorithms in the .NET framework using C#. That being said the book does cover the changes made to the .NET 4.0 framework and to C# 4.0.
The code is very well written--it is beautiful well structured communicative code. The code in the book is sparsely commented; it is so well-written that few comments are needed. As I have said, in many ways the book is a book of code algorithms, for example, in chapter 5 Convert Between Number Bases, Convert a Number to Bytes, Determine if an Integer is Even, Determine if a Number is Prime, Count the Number of 1 Bits etc. All these code examples are useful algorithms but have nothing to do with .NET Framework 4.0 or C# 4.0 per se.
Despite what the Introduction says this is decidedly not a book for beginners. While they may be able to find useful algorithms here and there the content of the book is way too terse for a beginner to follow and they should turn to other books for a more complete introduction to C#. Chapter 8 on regular expressions will only be useful to programmers that already have the basics of regular expressions well-understood otherwise even the first few code examples will leave them scratching their heads. This book does not do any hand-holding but rather shows you in very practical ways how to use the C# language and the .NET framework.
I loved the code examples using dynamic types as this was the best example I have yet seen of using them in a practical straight-forward way. The code is the book is not just useful and terse but it is also elegant. For example, the ternary operator is used multiple times in the CompressFile project in Chapter 11 producing really elegant concise and clear code.
The book, not the down-loadable code, has a few errors and code bugs but very few, for example:
Pg 16 code won't compile since _x is private and therefore not accessible to the derived class
Pg 17 line Console.WriteLine(d.MyProperty().ToString()); wont compile
Pg 17 code wont compile, class Derived not inheriting from Base class--missing : base
DoSomething method in class Derived needs to be marked override not virtual to eliminate compiler warning
Pg 65 example code given says, "Because ArgumentNullException is a type of ArgumentException, and ArgumentException is first in the catch list, it will be called." This is not true as the compiler is smart enough to recognize the problem and results in a compiler error and therefore the code will not even run.
I recommend this book for intermediate and advanced developers. Read the book and study the code examples and you will:
1) Learn the .NET Framework 4.0
2) Learn C# 4.0
3) Add to your inventory of useful code algorithms
4) Improve your written code by reading and studying the elegant code in this book.C# 4.0 How-To Overview

The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies for Seniors: An A-to-Z Guide to Staying Physically Active, Mentally Sharp, and Disease-Free ReviewI found this book condescending and weak on useful health advice. Despite the "home remedies" title, the book's solution for just about anything that ails you is Ibuprofen. I expected far more emphasis on non-prescription health solutions from a book with the title "home remedies". The book's heavy emphasis on the side effects of prescription drugs made it clear that the authors assumed that the average senior is a prescription drug junkie and there is nothing in this book that will help such junkies kick their habits.
The medical advice in this book is very bland-- the same stuff you'll find in the magazines in your doctors' waiting rooms and in the mailings you get from your HMO. I did not find many home remedies listed here that my own doctor has recommended to me (for example, boric acid for recurrent yeast infections and tea tree oil.) There is no mention of low carbohydrate diets as an alternative to pancreas-destroying glyburide drugs for those in the early stages of Type II diabetes. There's nothing about Condoitin and Glucosamine Sulfate for arthritis. These are all "home remedies" that are gaining increased support from doctors because they work for many people and are far cheaper than expensive prescription drugs. Their complete omission from a book of this sort was a disappointment.

KISS: Behind the Mask - The Official Authorized Biography ReviewWhat makes this book a must-get for Kiss fans is the first section. During this segment, a never-before-released text from 1979 reveals an incredible amount of commaraderie and friendship among the members of Kiss, even during their most difficult era. It actually illustrates the sweeter side of the band and how much they genuinely cared for one another as individuals. It was also refreshing to be able to read quotes from Gene Simmons that were not practiced hype intended to promote the Cult of Simmons to the market. This first segment was written before Gene became GENE SIMMONS INC. and is a poignant snapshot of what the man - hopefully - is really like. But also, the vulnerability of a young Paul Stanley, the wit, charm and intelligence of a young Ace Frehley and the sentimentality of a young Peter Criss shine in the opening of the book.
To their credit, the band,in authorizing this bio, have allowed the inclusion of a number of credible sources from outside the realm of the band's influence that add an authenticity to the book. The quotes and stories from Bill Aucoin, Sean Delaney, Joyce Bogart, Bob Kulick and others dispute many myths surrounding the band and help clarify many hazy aspects of the band's history. It is clear that Kiss is not the House That Simmons Built. Rather, it was - and has always been - a group effort, culling from the talents of dozens of people at a time.
The second section has the band members and various insiders quoting on thoughts about almost every Kiss song and album recorded. I say almost because many details about Peter Criss' and Ace Frehley's 1978 solo albums were excluded - from the onset, a minor flaw, but one that becomes a tragic omission when bearing in mind that every song from "Hot in the Shade" is covered. A better biography would have paid particular attention to those two solo albums, since their releases were the catalysts to the band's eventual split. Ace Frehley's was the most successful of the four - clarifying the idea that he did not need Kiss - while Peter Criss', possibly the most melodic and creative - was the least successful - clarifying that Kiss was keeping him from a wider audience. But all of this is ingnored while the drummer from Gene's solo album is allowed to wax philisophic about the sessions in England.
Among other things this book shows the brilliance of Bill Aucoin. Indeed, until Doc McGhee took over as manager, Kiss floundered after Aucoin's dismissal. So paying homage to Aucoin earns this book one star. Giving Peter Criss and Ace Frehley a fair amount of the spotlight earns it two stars. Dispelling the many concocted myths created by the Simmons Propoganda Machine earn it one and a half more.
While Kiss is gradually become more and more of a band comfortable release newer compilation albums, this book may be arriving at just the right time. With Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley both working on solo albums and Kiss reduced to nothing more than a touring act (we can hardly call them a band anymore, with anyone able to be replaced - it's more like the best circus you've ever seen. And why not?), we may have seen the last of any new material from the band. If that's the case, and even if it isn't, this is a book that's worth it's price and then some.KISS: Behind the Mask - The Official Authorized Biography Overview

I own two books on kitchen knives and knife skills, this one and Weinstein's Mastering Knife Skills. Chad Ward's book is the best of the two by its breadth and wealth of information and is objectively a very good book.
Physically, the book is a medium sized hard cover, well edited. There is a number of good B&W pictures through the book to illustrate specific points, and there's a central section of 48 pages of glossy color pictures depicting specific knife techniques (battonets vs. julienne, onion, tomatoes, cutting a chicken, butterflying a piece of meat, skinning salmon, carving a turkey, steeling a knife, several sharpening methods, etc).
The book is organized as follows:
1 - Choosing the right kitchen knife:
This section is about 90 pages, so it's a sizeable part of the book. The author goes through the various knife types, costs, etc. Generally, Chad advocates staying away from knife block & sets, and explains that a home cook can do most everything with 3 knives: 8" to 10" chef, paring, and a serrated (or scalloped) bread knife. So his recommendation is to get the best of those. What is really helpful is that the author gives specific recommendations for all budgets - below $100, $200, or "the sky's the limit". Too many books just say "get what feels best". Chad goes beyond this to give a range of specific endorsements. This part also includes 10+ pages on cutting boards and how to take care of them.
2 - Kitchen knife skills:
This section is about 30 pages but also has most of the color pictures in the center section. This is where the key knife skill concepts are explained, how to hold the blade and the item to be cut, etc. This is similar to other knife skill books, but with one major improvements which is a few recipes to practice the skills. Those recipes are really welcome, and because they are basic recipes that can be used as base for a number of varied dishes, they are great recipes to include in this book.
3 - Knife sharpening:
This section is about 70 pages and covers the theory & science of knife sharpening as well as specific reviews and advices for several methods. Chad reviews the sharpening of Western as well as Japanese style knives, and several sharpeing systems (e.g., Spyderco, EdgePro, etc).
At the end of the book are several pages of resources to buy knives, boards, sharpeners, etc.
In short, I think this is a complete book that covers the key concepts of knife skills, but also addresses knife selection and care. That's why I was so happy to receive Fix It, Make It, Grow It, Bake It by Billee Sharp to review. Although, this book is about so much more than cleaning supply recipes. It's "the DIY guide to the good life" with info on essential oil remedies, kitchen cures, crafting project how-to's, composting tips, jam recipes, and much more. This is an essential, practical resource to have in your home. I love it because it eliminates me doing a Google search to find something. It's all in this one book.

Sharp Writing: Building Better Writing Skills (Kaplan Sharp Series) ReviewKaplan's "Sharp Writing" is a practical overview of grammar and usage, but is quite basic. If you are looking for a book that will provide you with more "Style" advice than grammar, I would recommend Style: Toward Clarity and Grace (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing). I would recommend the Kaplan book for anyone looking for quick refresher or short reference work.
The first section of the book provides an overview and refresher on the different grammatical categories, strucure/usage, puncution, tone, etc. The chapters in the first section cover very basic items such as "what is a noun" or "what is a verb" to a bit more complex topics such as "intransitive verbs," phrase/clause interaction, the passive voice (and its uses), and appositives. Each chapter uses the "Building Block Method" wherein Kaplan provides you with a basic quiz at the beginning, then information, and then a further quiz at the end of each chapter. This does help the reader to understand where their knowledge is lacking and pay more attention to those areas as they go through the book.
The second section is titled "Sharper Writing Stages" and shifts the focus of the book from grammar to strategies on actually writing your paper/book/etc. Kaplan provides a standard overview of common topics such as: brainstorming, outlining, journaling, researching, and paper structure (intro, body, conclusion). There is also a moderately detailed refresher on sentence structure, word choice, quotation usage, and revising your paper through editing (I particular found the editing symbol chart helpful). As with section 1, there are practice questions and quizes, but I found those less helpful in this section as the materical was not as rule based.
The third section is titled "Sharper Writing Formats" and focuses on putting the previous sections into practice in such ways as business writing, letter writing, etc. The section provides overviews of topics such as resumes, business emails, academic writing and personal letters, and provides formats and tips for each.
Ultimately the book is similar to what most people will probably cover in 11th or 12th grade English or possibly English 101 or 102 at University. However, if you are like me, you probably do not remember everything you learned in these courses and this book serves as a helpful reference and quick refresher.
