Brain: The Complete Mind ReviewMichael Sweeney and many others have stated that the brain needs to be challenged and exercised in order for it to grow and to remain sharp. It's one of several reasons why I read such a book, a book that explores the incredible machine that is our brain.
When I first explored this hefty 340 page heavyweight volume, I thought I'd just enjoy the pictures and only read passages and snippets of interest. Midway through the first chapter I was hooked and never looked back.
I'm just an average potato brained reader with no science background or passionate interest in science but with a late life interest in this natural wonder that lives within each and every one of us. The book informs, challenges, and offers topics to think and reflect upon. It covers the physiology of the brain, the history of what man has learned about it, current knowledge and possible future breakthroughs.
Throughout the book are many supplementary pieces of information that support, explain, and enhance the text. In the beginning of Brain the reader is introduced to these extras: tables, charts, flow charts, sidebars, fact boxes, and fast facts. After interrupting myself too many times from the flow of the main text to read these extras, I found it easier and more enjoyable and efficient to read the sidebars first.
Two of my favorite chapters are near the end of the book - Learning and Memory and The Aging Brain. I found quite a bit here to apply to my own brain and to share with my students.
Anyone with an interest in the workings of the brain or anything related to the human brain should find "Brain" a fascinating, stimulating, and educational read. Even if you don't have the desire to read such a book cover to cover, it's a great book to add to you personal library.Brain: The Complete Mind Overview

Save Your Brain: The 5 Things You Must Do to Keep Your Mind Young and Sharp ReviewSometimes when a new book arrives - I cannot wait to read it. Save Your Brain - 5 things you must do to keep your mind young and sharp by Paul David Nussbaum is just such a book. For some reason, I am attracted to books on keeping the mind sharp. For example, I loved Making a Good Brain Great and Brain Rules.
I was interested to read in the Globe and Mail that people with advanced Parkinsons cannot walk but can ride a bicycle. The brain is interesting.
The book starts with a survey to see how good you are on brain stuff. It includes questions on exercise, diet etc. I was surprised I scored "poor". Perhaps that is partly because I am a tough self grader but partly because the questions did not allow me to use alternatives that I do that are likely comparable. EG - dancing once per week (which I do not do) is surely comparable to martial arts.
Of course it has a technical section on how the brain works and what it is. And part convincing me that I need to work on saving my brain.
The 5 things to do to Save Your Brain:
1 - Socialize. Basic human interaction.
2 - Exercise. 25% of the blood circulation goes to support the brain.
3 - Mental Stimulation. Use it or lose it. Learn something new always. Challenge yourself.
4 - Spirituality. He includes "mental rest" in this category.
5 - Nutrition. The obvious - eat like your mom told you to and use supplements if you cannot. He is also a big advocate of fish oil.
These are all obvious and not new. He did not emphasize the things not to do (like drugs, alcohol and boxing). It was a good reminder of things I already knew.Save Your Brain: The 5 Things You Must Do to Keep Your Mind Young and Sharp Overview

The Sharp Brains Guide to Brain Fitness: 18 Interviews with Scientists, Practical Advice, and Product Reviews, to Keep Your Brain Sharp ReviewI had great expectations for this book and was not disappointed.
This book is a great resource for learning the basics of the different brain areas and varied brain functions. I learned in Chapter 1 how to improve learning abilities based on the varied ways of learning. If a child is having a difficult time in learning, changing the technique of learning is indicated. In schools, variations must be used with learners that are not learning in the traditional manner. The interview with Dr. James Zull discussed this point. This was not a central point of Chapter 1 but I thought that the comments on education were really interesting.
Chapter 1 also discussed how neuroplasticity is at the core of brain fitness. An interesting study was described, stating that London taxi drivers have a larger hippocampus than London bus drivers due to the taxi drivers need to decide on varying routes compared to the bus drivers having set routes during their day.
The most helpful chapter of this book for me was Chapter 2. The chapter delved in to the 4 pillars of brain health. The four pillars of brain health are: balanced nutrition, stress management, physical exercise, and mental stimulation. Before reading this book, I knew that what is good for the heart is good for the brain. What I learned was how critical physical exercise is for brain health. The chapter went into great detail for each of the 4 pillars and discussed scientific studies related to each area. The book stated that brisk walking for a total of 3 hours each week can halt or reverse brain atrophy. This chapter has straight forward information on how to make a difference in how you work towards brain health and fitness.
Chapter 4 delved in to the different brain training programs that are available to the public. I had no idea that there were so many different programs available outside of the medical and educational professions. The different programs were discussed without bias, which was really appreciated. The programs were broken down into an easy to compare chart and then discussed in detail. This chapter was quite helpful to me in finding a stress management product.
This book also has thought provoking questions for group discussions and or book clubs listed in Chapter 7. The questions listed will bring the topic of brain fitness front and center to debates with families, friends, and colleagues. What better way to stimulate the brain than to take a walk with a friend and talk about the book.
Highly recommended.
